At the outbreak of war in 1939 Perth was serving in the West Indies. She served with distinction at Cape Matapan against Italy. Perth suffered damage from an air attack while berthed in Malta. Perth evacuated troops from Greece to Crete when Crete was invaded by the Germans When Japan entered the war in December 1941 Perth was sent to Java in the Dutch East Indies - now Indonesia. Perth's total complement was 681, of these 353 including Captain Hector Waller D.S.O were lost in action, 4 died ashore and 324 fell into Japanese hands. Early business in Sandhurst in 1860s.An account ledger used to record the purchases and services made for a business. Records date from 1860. The ledger is covered with brown leather with decorative edges. There are alphabetical tabs at the front of the book with lists of names. Individual customers are allocated a double page entry. Pages are ruled and numbered. The book is in very poor condition having obvious signs of water and insect damage. The writing in the first quarter of the book is barely legible, remaining pages can be read. This card together with a log book was a vital record of service for any seaman serving on a Merchant vessel that had been commandeered for War transport work and needed to be validated to ensure eligibility to be taken on as qualified member of the crew. G.W. Duncan appears to have specialised in engine room and mechanical maintenance. He appears to have served aboard a number of vessels including merchant vessels commissioned into wartime service in WW2.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources. Flewellen volunteereed for RAN service in January 1913, and shortly thereafter began training as a "boy" on HMAS Tingara. He then served on HMAS Sydney and in 1914 was a member of the Australian Navy & Military Expeditionary Force to German New Guinea, taking part in November 1914 in the Battle of Cocos against SMS Emden. Edgar Edwardes Walker was the founding manager of the Australian Brick, Tile and Tesselated Tile Company, which began operations in Mitcham in 1886. Changed to the Australian Tesselated Tile Company in 1895, Walker became owner in 1922. It became the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. He was a Nunawading Shire Councillor for 25 years and several times Shire President.
