The former Mont Park/Bundoora Psychiatric and Repatriation Hospitals Complex consisted of seven hospitals on a site of 185 hectares. The site comprising the Mont Park and Strathallen estates was consolidated by the Victorian government by purchase and transfer from the Closer Settlement Board in 1909 . The Mont Park Hospital commenced in 1910 with the building of the Farm Workers Block . In 1912 the landscape gardener Hugh Linaker was employed to layout the grounds of Mont Park and other State mental hospitals. The other hospitals were gradually split off from the Mont Park administration to form separate entities included among these was the Macleod Repatriation Hospital (1915), An agreement was made with the Defence Department in 1914 for the latter to erect the Mont Park central block (the "Chronic Wards") for use as a Military Hospital, and for it later to revert to the State as portion of Mont Park Hospital. The buildings now known as the Chronic Wards were completed in this way in 1916 and used as the Australian General Hospital no. 16 for the duration of the war. One wing of this building was set aside for mental patients during this period.

Flewellen volunteereed for RAN service in January 1913, and shortly thereafter began training as a "boy" on HMAS Tingara. He then served on HMAS Sydney and in 1914 was a member of the Australian Navy & Military Expeditionary Force to German New Guinea, taking part in November 1914 in the Battle of Cocos against SMS Emden. Flewellen served in the RAN until September 1944.

Ballarat born Robert Jenkins (6th Field Company Engineers) embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A40 Ceramic in November 1915. Twice wounded ("shell-shocked"), he returned to Australia in April 1919. Robert Edward Jenkins enlisted in the army (V195393) in December 1941 and in October 1942 joined the RAAF. At discharge, he was a Flight Lieutenant in 514 Squadron.

As an official war artist, Dargie produced works in the Middle East, New Guinea, India and Burma. At war's end Dargie was sent to Greece to 'make good, the discrepancies in art coverage of the disastrous campaign that took place in 1941.'

George Frederick Boxall (1051 8th Battalion H Company), a miner from Bendigo, embarked from Melbourne on board Transport A24 Benalla on 19 October 1914. He returned to Australia on 8 May 1916, having suffered "shell shock" from a bomb blast on Gallipoli in September 1915.

South Melbourne born Schimmelbusch enlisted in March 1917 and departed Melbourne in June 1917. Diaries cover the 1918 to mid-1919 period and "My Comrades" book notes some fellow 4th Light Horsemen who were wounded or killed - at Beersheba, for example. Dangerously ill (dysentery, malaria) for part of 1918, Schimmelbusch returned to Australia in June 1919.

Stephenson departed Melbourne on 3 September 1941 onboard the Queen Mary. Diary runs from departure date until September 1 1942, covering Stephenson's Middle East service and his wounding in action at Alamein. One year later, Stephenson was wounded in action at Buiem River in New Guinea, and a few days later died from the wounds received.

Hall enlisted in October 1939, and departed Melbourne onboard HMT Dunera in April 1940. Diary runs from April 1940 until April 1942, and includes the evacuations of Greece and Crete. Hall returned to Australia in September 1945.

Diary covers the period from November 1942 to September 1944. Waters was executed by the Japanese in New Guinea in March 1945. The autograph book belonged to Waters mother (Maude), and records the appreciation of the service personnel who lodged at her residence in Bridge Street, Hampton.

Log Book covers the period from 1943 until Palmer's discharge in 1952. Post-war, Palmer was Captain of the New Zealand Govenor Generals aircraft (the GG at the time was Bernard Freyberg). Palmer was awarded an Air Force Cross in 1949.

Born in Derby, Tasmania, Tink enlisted in January 1941 and was discharged in December 1945. Documents include Flying Log Book, RAAF ID, paybooks and certificates of training and service.

Twice rejected in Melbourne for active service, Rudduck booked a passage to London and joined the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, gaining his commission shortly thereafter. Lieutenant Rudduck lost his left arm in action in France, but following repeated requests was susequently permitted to return to the trenches, where he later died from further wounds on 5th June 1918. Ruddock's brother, Ernest, served with 57th Battalion in France.

George Langley, a teacher from Port Melbourne, embarked from Melbourne onboard HMAT Ulysses on 10th May 1915. Commanded the Australian units of the Imperial Camel Corps and later was CO of the 14th Light Horse. Returned to Australia in July 1919.

Davis of New York law firm Davis Polk Wardwell to Herbert Robinson Brookes regarding Rivett's 1946 book, Behind Bamboo, and his (Davis) views on Russia and post-war Europe. William Jackson (588 - 17th Battalion, B Company) embarked from Sydney onboard HMAT Themistocles on 12th May 1915. Awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery in France in June 1916. Died in 1959, aged 61 years. Victoria Cross 'For most conspicuous bravery. On the return from a successful raid, several members of the raiding party were seriously wounded in "No Man's Land" by shell fire. Private Jackson got back safely and, after handing over a prisoner whom he had brought in, immediately went out again under very heavy shell fire and assisted in bringing in a wounded man. He then went out again, and with a sergeant was bringing another wounded man when his arm was blown off by a shell and the sergeant was rendered unconscious. He then returned to our trenches, obtained assistance, and went out again to look for his two wounded comrades. He set a splendid example of pluck and determination. In November 1914 Williams was serving onboard HMAS Sydney when the German ship Emden was sunk. He continued in service with the navy after the war, and also served in WW2.

Grieve embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Persic on 3rd June 1916, and returned to Australia on 8th April 1918. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Messines on 7th June 1917.

Glassford's older brother - Capt John Canute Gordon Glassford - also served with 10 Field Ambulance and was awarded a Military Cross for his actions on the Western Front.

East-Almond embarked from Melbourne on board the Hororata on 19th October 1914, and returned to Australia on 10th October 1918. He took part in the landing at Gallipoli, and also served in France.

Letters written to Bert and Bessie Nelson, and to Bessie Bishop. Chandler embarked from Sydney on board the Euripides on 20th October 1914, and died of disease on 26 November 1915. In one letter, mention is made of landing on the Turkish coast on the "murderous morning" of the 25th April.

William Tuckfield embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Ballarat on 19th February 1917. The SS Ballarat was torpedoed by the German submarine UB.32, but no lives were lost. On board were members of the Victorian Scottish Regiment (see photograph).

Roderick McFarlane embarked from Adelaide on board the Port Lincoln on 20th October 1914, and returned on 28th May 1919. Letter tells of fighting and living conditions in Palestine, including diseases, treatment of horses and certain troop dispositions.
