The Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised in 1885 as the mounted arm of Victoria’s colonial defence forces. Companies were recruited in rural centres across the State, members of country rifle clubs forming a significant component. They were semi-professional: only a small allowance was paid to members. Members were required to provide their own mount. Mounted riflemen were not cavalry, not being equipped with lance or sword. They were trained to fight with rifle and bayonet after dismounting. Horses enabled rapid and far reaching manoeuvrability. Although the medal is inscribed 'Warrnambool R C' we believe it to be a Warrnambool Bowling Club medal. The Warrnambool Bowls Club gave this medal to W&DHS in 1968 describing it as a medal won by life member William Kucks, club champion in 1895. Also newspaper reports show that William Kucks was the bowls club champion in 1895. No record has been found of William Kucks belonging to either rowing or rifle clubs. William Kucks was a long-time resident of Warrnambool, operating a boarding house in Timor Street in the 1860s and then a bakery in the same street for many years. He served as a town councilor 1899-1901.This badge is of considerable interest as a memento of a Warrnambool sporting club in the 1890s and of a well-known 19th century Warrnambool resident and town councilor 1899-1901.This brass star shaped medal has a circular centre with text surrounded by a raised narrow annulus and eight near triangular hollow shapes interspersed with small spheres. on the obverse, The reverse has a metal hook and clip. There is a ring attached to the tip of one of the triangles with a second ring through it. A collection of papers made by Betty Williamson for a presentation at RVIB, and includes newspaper articles as well as a potted history of the Club. In the 1960's, the RVIB approached engineer George Glover to produce equipment to allow blind people to shoot, based upon that made available at St Dunstan's Hospital in the UK. The rifle range opened in February 1966 at the rear of St Kilda Road with 30 members, and soon became involved in matches with sighted rifle clubs in the area. The club had many successful years, competing against teams from Canada and New Zealand in 1968, and had the support of ICIANZ which provided them with free munitions as well as teams to compete against. This ammunition bag was used by Harry Mitchell (son of Lindsay Mitchell) at the Bendigo Rifle Club in 1959, the bag was designed to hold 303 riffle bullets used in target shooting or could hold 7 cartridges for a shotgun. The Gladstone bag was very popular in the 1940/50 era, it fitted on the handlebars of a bicycle and it was used by footballers and sportsmen. A couple bottles of beer would fit comfortably in the bag and was.used to take beer home after the hotels closed at 6pm. These two articles were donated by Lindsay Mitchell to the Numurkah Historical Society. The Sunbeam Mixmaster belonged by Marjory Welch, Nana of Margaret Mitchell and would have been used in late 1930 and during 1940's. It was painted and used by Linda Mitchell, (great great grand daughter) when at universitv in 1987 White Sunbeam Mixmaster was purchased by Margaret Mitchell 1965. lt was her first mixmaster after she was married in 1964 The bread bins. This instrument was given to Allan White on 24.8.1935 by his grandfather. Allan White came to Orbost in 1946. He was firstly a share fvarmer on 3 farms then in business - saddler and bike shop with his brother Eric. Then withG.P. Motors as the RACV man. David Gordon Collection. A Codd-neck bottle is a type of bottle used for carbonated drinks. Hiram Codd, an English engineer invented a successful process that he patented as “Codd’s patented globe stopper bottle” in 1872. This type of bottle has a closing design in which a glass marble is held against a rubber seal, which sits within a recess in the lip. The Codd-neck bottle was designed and manufactured with thick glass to withstand internal pressure, and a chamber to enclose a marble and a rubber washer in the neck. The bottles are filled upside down, and pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. The bottle is pinched into a special shape to provide a chamber into which the marble is pushed to open the bottle. This prevents the marble from blocking the neck as the drink is poured. The bottles were regularly produced for many decades, but gradually declined in usage. Since children smashed the bottles to retrieve the marbles, vintage bottles are relatively scarce and have become collector items, particularly in the UK. William Whittaker's son Joseph Whittaker operated a cordial factory at Tarnagulla for many years. It was located at the southern end of Commercial Road, and was the last business premises on the eastern side of the road. Joseph Whittaker was a leading citizen at Tarnagulla for many years, and was a leading supporter of sporting activities including cricket and rifle clubs, as well as a strong patron of the fire brigade. He was known by some as Ginger Beer Joe.

Born in Hammersmith, London, England in 1903, Ernie May migrated to Australia at the age of 19 years old. A printer by trade, Ernie worked on the land at Woodburn, near Wonthaggi, then near Smithton, Tasmania. He then returned to his trade at the Launceston Daily Telegraph and then with the Rainbow Argus in the Victorian Mallee. Arriving in Wodonga in 1927, Ernie was employed by Mr Charles Ryan who at the time owned the "Wodonga Sentinel" newspaper. He quickly became involved in community activities. Ernie was President of the Border and Northeast Band Association, Secretary of Wodonga Rifle Club for 20 years and Secretary of the Public Library for 15 years. When Ernie May was Wodonga Bandmaster, the Wodonga Band played at Saturday afternoon football matches as well as other public appearances. At that time the Wodonga Band had 30 members. Ernie also conducted his own dance band. In 1952, Mr May and his wife moved to Sale, gaining employment firstly with the Enterprise Press, then the Gippsland Times. In 1957 he started up a monthly paper at Phillip Island. Not content with so many years as Bandmaster at Wodonga, Ernie May became Bandmaster for Phillip Island's brass band.
