T. A. Prydderch Confectioner and S.G. Perry Hairdresser businesses Main Street between Town Hall and Church of England. Now Demolished. Mr. T.A. Prydderch the male with hands in pockets ran this business for many years. later to conduct the Egg Board. Mr. S. Perry conducted his hair dressing business for many years in Stawell. Mr. Parry is the tall gentleman with hands behind his back. The duplicate photo was donated by Meryl Bowers on 7.11.2012. 2012 Site - now occupied by Pyke's Cycles & Pets.Three black and white photographs of two business houses. Ruins of Gustav Mahnke’s Bakery Shop Corner of Main Street and Wimmera Street Stawell destroyed by fire 1922. The Chimneys left standing would have belonged to the ovens. Firemen Left R. Chapman - extreme right Alf Pickering , inspecting damage. The Post Office Hotel and the destroyed bakery on the corner of Main and Wimmera Streets. Gustav Mahnke, a German, was a borough Councilor, Mayor for three successive terms - 1904-07. Note extreme right in the backgorundbehind trees - Stawell Baths.B/W. First floor view from corner of Main & Patrick Streets looking East down Patrick Street. Weatherboard Foresters Hotel in Main Street on left corner. Foresters Hotel was built in 1868 by Mr. Joseph Cawley, Mr. and Mrs. Cawley were the occupants for 30 years. The site was previously occupied by a Billiards Room. In 1917 the building became Foresters Coffee Palace with new owner Mr. J.C. Crothers who purchased the building for 410 pounds and leased it to Mr. Robert Wennerbom. The next lease holder was Miss Fulton and in 1921 Mrs. R. Claringbold took over and called the building Foresters House. The building was sold in 1935 and demolished shortly after sale. Upper Main Street Stawell. Mining Exchange and Commercial Hotel built 1861. Photo c1880. Hotel housed the Victoria Theatre. Commercial Hotel built and licensed in 1861 and added to over the years. About 1865 an assembly room/theatre was erected at the hotel, part of this was the assembly room of the Quartz Miners Hotel in Upper Main Street which had been demolished on account of the increased mining in the area. The assembly room was the only theatre at the Reefs until the Town Hall was erected. It was called the Victoria Theatre. In 1878 the Stawell paper reports that the Court of Petty Sessions had been held in the Victoria Theatre at the Commercial Hotel. Mr Sauerbrey was the owner of the Hotel in 1869 and he advertised extensive additions of sitting-rooms, bedrooms & bathrooms. First class stabling and carriage house. Rooms for Mining Meetings and bookings for Cobb & Co.Commercial Hotel with first floor balcony. Eight men lined up in street and three women on balcony. Upper Main Street Reefs looking East towards Big Hill taken from front of Joyce's Hibernian Hotel . Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. This scene was taken in 1866 in Main Street from in front of Joyce’s Iberian Hotel on the left, the site of the present townhall. It is looking uphill and eastward with Big Hill in the far background. The Hibernian Hotel was built on Commercial Street Pleasant Creek Goldfields in 1858 and was moved to Main Street Reefs, the present site of the Town Hall by Mr. & Mrs. Joyce. Jennings's Western Turf Hotel situated in upper Main Street (Opposite Monaghan's Estate Office) Mr. George Jennings was proprietor until the late 1860's when he went to live at "Mayo Park" Lubek. The Hotel had Various owners until it was delicensed in 1909 and became a boarding house. It was demolished in 1921. R.
