Trophy, Lilydale's ANA DAy Carnival Trophy, c pre 1920s
THe Trophy was discovered in a box of donated goods at the Druin Anglican Church Op SHop and was donated by them to the museum. A response to inquire in the local Leader newspaper established that the trophy was won by Les Pullyblack, who lived in Northcote. He would have been 18 or 19 years old when he won the trophy at Lilydale ANA Day Carnival. Les' great-nephews, Stuart, Mark and Brett went to school in Lilydale. Notification of a meeting of citizens willing to assist in organising a carnival in aid of the St Kilda Memorial Hall building fund and local charities. The date given is Wednesday 13 February. It would have been 13 February 1929 because the Mayor is identified as Thos Unsworth, who served as Mayor in 1928-29. The Memorial Hall commemorates those who served in World War I, was officially opened on Armistice Day, 1924, and operated as a dance and social hall. In January 1927 the Health Department gave permission for it to operate as the Memorial Cinema. Program of a 5-day festival held 27/2/1926 - 6/3/1926 to raise funds for the Bush Fire Relief Fund, Soldiers' Memorial Hall, St Vincent's Hospital and the Catani Memorial (St Kilda cenotaph). The carnival began with a procession from what is now St Kilda Junction, down Fitzroy Street to Luna Park and the Lower Esplanade. Events included novelty races and contests including pillow-fighting, a paddling race where contestants had to balance on kerosene tins, a cigarette race where competitors raced with lighted cigarettes, and many other contests at the beach. There were also swimming events, boat races, lifesaving demonstrations, displays, music and dancing.
