Former Ballarat Teachers' College (BTC) students from 1946 to 1965 remember music lecturer Monica Miller with great fondness. Speech Training was also the domain of Monica Miller at BTC. The hair brush is part of a vanity set owned by a woman who lived in the Harbour Master's house at Warrnambool in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The set was possibly a wedding gift from her mother-in-law, Caroline Edwards, a local business woman who was an importer of 'china and fancy goods' along with her husband Thomas Myers Edwards. The Edwards owned Staffordshire House a business in Timor St (and later Liebig St) from 1876. The hair brush is an example of a valued possession of women at the time and could signify social standing. It was also a functional accessory used on a daily basis.The item is significant socially as an example of accessories available to and used by women in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Historically, it is linked to a local import business ‘Staffordshire House’ in Liebig St Warrnambool, where it most likely came from. A pewter (or possibly silver-plated) hair brush that is part of a vanity set. It features a beautiful ornate moulded rose/flower design on the back and handle of the hair brush. Two reasons for placement of Plaques in The New Chum Park. One is to acknowledge the contribution that both the Cornish and German people who lived and worked in Long Gully made to the establishment of City of Greater Bendigo. The second, Famous Journalist Anthony Trollop visited Bendigo just as Underground Mining was starting to blossom. His remarks of Bendigo were uncomplimentary as that of Ballarat, which he complimented as a beautiful city. Twenty years later thanks to U/ground mining Bendigo rivalled Ballarat as a beautiful city to which the residents of Long Gully played a major role. This is a card sent by Mr and Miss Robertson thanking the Warrnambool Club members for their sympathy following a recent bereavement. The Warrnambool Club was established in 1873 as a gentlemen’s club and the Warrnambool Club building in Kepler Street, still standing today, was erected in 1877. No information is available on the Robertson family except that they lived in Penshurst but it is presumed that Mr Robertson was a member of the Warrnambool Club.This card is of interest as it has a social history showing the type of bereavement card used in the early 1900s – a plain card with a black edging. These cards could be purchased in bulk with a blank sheet for inserting the relevant details. The connection with the Warrnambool Club and the Robertson family is also of interest.This is a small cream-coloured card with black edging. It has handwritten material on it written in black ink. A thick black Methodist Hymn - Book with self texture and embossed lines around the edges of the front and back covers. It has a black and pink handmade embroidered bookmark with a black beaded tassel included. The title is printed in gold lettering on the spine with four bands of indented stripes. On the endpapers at the front is The Lord's Prayer printed inside a red ornate frame and opposite is the hymn, Gloria with music similarly framed. The back endpapers have the hymn music for Dorology and the prayer, Benedictions - both are framed in red lines. The edges of the pages are gilt. At the back of the book there is an Index of first lines, an Index to the first line of every verse, except the first, in each hymn and an Index of authors. This type of folded postcards was popular with tourists in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s and often kept by them for many years afterwards. The views of Warrnambool here, taken about the 1950s, were typical of the Warrnambool postcards available at the time and were mass-produced as many examples survive today. They include photographs of Hopkins Falls, the beach and harbour, Liebig Street, Hopkins River, coastal scenery and the Botanical Gardens. These postcards are of some historical interest, though the photographs appear frequently in many publications. They also have a social significance showing what tourists bought 60 or more years ago.This is a packet in envelope form containing 12 coloured postcards of views of Warrnambool about the 1950s. The photographs are printed on buff-coloured paper and fold up to envelope size so that they can be sent by post. The front cover includes three dotted lines for the address and the back cover has a space to include the name of the sender. One page gives some general information on Warrnambool.
