Tawonga South was situated between the rural township of Tawonga and the State Electricity Commission of Victoria's construction town of Mt Beauty. The building in the fore ground of the photo was built before the Mt Beauty township was built as the occupier was working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.The Barters came to work on the State Electricity Commission of Victoria's Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme before housing in the town of Mt Beauty was built. The Barters rudimentary dwelling was probably not a legal building. The photo was taken by Vera Hore (nee Ryder), the publican at the Bogong Hotel near Tawonga South where the photo was taken. Mr. “Brickie” Thomas of Clifton Ave and his wife. (4 snaps). Mr. Thomas was affectionally know as Bricky Thomas. He and his wife were early Stawell resident of 17 Clifton Ave. Stawell. Mrs. Pickering sister (Vera Perry) cared for Mr. and Mrs. Thomas in their later years. These little tins were available for soldiers to buy before embarking to the first world war. As the candles and matches are contained within the tin , it would have been a ideal way to keep both dry. The lid of the tin could also have been useful as a windshield. The tin was donated in memory of Les Lawlor. James Leslie Lawlor was born in Mepunga and lived in Warrnambool and enlisted in October 1916. He was discharged as medically unfit as he had broken his wrist three years previously and the break had failed to heal well. The tin was donated in his memory by his sister Vera Maguire This item with its link to World War 1 soldiers has historical significance to Australians in general but is also a link to a local family. Tawonga Bowling Club is well established with many local men and women involved. Bowling is a popular sport enabling locals to socialise and compete with each other and visit other clubs. Players formed teams representing the Tawonga Club and traveled to other clubs and on occasion represented their area eg.
