The Warrnambool Standard newspaper was started in 1872 by William Fairfax and Henry Laurie. It continues in that context today as a daily newspaper for the Western District. This copy is dated July 1 1905 and covers items of interest and advertisements for current businesses many which continued as household names until the latter part of the 20th Century. This is the original book “Warrnambool Past & Present Sixty Years of Progress 1847-1907” that was published in 1907. It features photos of Warrnambool, taken by Edward Vidler in 1907, who matches them with some earlier prints. Vidler had a photographic studio in Liebig Street Warrnambool. Compiled by Edward A. Vidler, Secretary, Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufacturers, and Warrnambool and District Progress League The front cover of this little but significant book of photographs, advertisements and commentary reads “Warrnambool Past & Present. Sixty Years of Progress – 1847-1907. Illustrated by 100 views of Old and New Warrnambool. Price : One Shilling.” The title page of the book states “Warrnambool : Past and Present. The Metropolis of the Western District. Compiled from contemporary records by Edward A. Vidler, Secretary, Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufacturers, and Warrnambool and District Progress League. Illustrated. Printed by The Thompson Printing Co., Koroit Street Warrnambool.” In 1984 a facsimile reproduction of Vidler's publication was printed by the 'Osburne Group'. (The Group was named after Richard Osburne who owned the first newspaper in Warrnambool, called The Examiner. The donor of this book was another member of the three people who formed the Osburne Group). This newer book is an A4 portrait style format with Vidler's publication on the top of each page, and a matching 1984 photograph with contemporary comments on the lower half of the page. The fringed tablecloth is an example of a domestic item brought to Australia by early settlers in the Western District of Victoria as a home comfort.The fringed tablecloth helps tell the story of the arrival of European settlers and the small, light home comforts they brought with them to maintain a meaningful connection to home.Fringed and lined tablecloth. The front is hand embroidered on brown loose weave fabric, the back a pale yellow polished cotton fabric. The edges on the back have been turned and machine stitched. Hand-stitching has been used to join the top to the back and to add the fringe around the edges. The embroidery uses tapestry wool in cream, yellow, brown and green tones. Augustus Bostock was the 9th child of Robert & Rachael Bostock of Vaucluse Epping Forest, Van Diemen’s Land. He was only 4 years old when his mother died. He was inspired by his father to seek his fortune in the Western District of Victoria. He arrived around 1850. He married Margaret Aitkin in July 1865. Augustus owned several properties in the district and leased others. He sat on the court of Warrnambool, Mortlake or Hexham as required. He resided at Marramook in Hawkesdale and later moved to Vaucluse in Hopetoun Road Warrnambool, where he died in 1920 at the age of 87. He was involved in many aspects of life in the Western District, racing, cricket, and social activities to name a few. This letter relates to the earliest recollections of Augustus Bostock and relate to land of the Western district from Camperdown, Darlington, through to Grasmere, Rosebrook and Yambuk. He writes about the terrain, vegetation and stock. This is one of a number of documents which relate to the Bostock family who were one of the most important pioneering families of the Western District. They owned and leased various properties around Warrnambool and were involved in many aspects of social and business life. No information is available on these two items which would have been collected and polished by someone, probably someone interested in lapidary. The quartz would probably not have come from our area (Western District of Victoria).These items have no known local significance and will be useful only for display. These are two white quartz crystals with gold and silvery encrustations and markings. They are rough on the top and cut into geometric shapes and polished on the bottom part. This satchel belonged to John Malcolm Fraser (1930-2015), the 22nd Prime Minister of Australia from 1975 to 1983. Malcolm Fraser was educated at Melbourne Grammar and Oxford University and lived for many years on the family property, Nareen in the Western District. He was the leader of the Australian Liberal Party and was the Federal member in the seat of Wannon in the Western District, an area which included Warrnambool. As the Prime Minister he took a particular interest in foreign affairs. This satchel was donated by Malcolm Fraser to a charity auction held in Warrnambool in 1997 in aid of the Red Cross and the purchaser of the satchel at that time has since donated the item to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This satchel is of considerable significance as it belonged to Malcolm Fraser, the Prime Minister of Australia from 1975 to 1983, the local member in the Federal seat of Wannon and a property owner and resident in the Western District of Victoria. This is a brown leather brief case or satchel. The compartment on one side has a metal catch and holders inside for pencils and pens. This side also has another compartment with a zip fastener and two extra pockets with flaps on the top held by metal catches. There is another compartment on the other side with an extra pocket enclosed with a zip folder. There is a leather handle on the top of the satchel and inside one of the pockets is an extra leather strap to extend the handle length. The handle has a maroon-coloured airways tag attached with information on the satchel’s owner. There is some scuffing near the top handle.
