Horace Henry Gowty (1903 - 1981). Started preaching whilst a member of Christian Endeavour. Served as a local preacher at Meatian, in the Mallee. At the age of 47 became a Home Missionary in the Methodist Church, serving at Lalbert, Birchip, Fitzroy and Alice Springs. On returning to Victoria he went to Poowong. He was ordained in 1967 at the age of 63, and went to Deloraine in Tasmania. On retiring, he and his wife moved to Berriwillock. He died at Sea Lake in 1981.B & W photograph of the Rev. The photo shows a small girl presenting a bunch of flowers to Lady Lavarack on the steps of Moorlands. The Queensland Governor Sir John Lavarack and his wife were attending the opening of the Legacy childrens' residence, Moorlands, in Brisbane on 20 February 1947. Legatee Stan Savige had travelled to Brisbane for the event, he is at the centre rear. From TROVE: Telegraph (Brisbane, Qld. : 1872 - 1947), Tuesday 18 February 1947, page 7 FOR OPENING OF LEGACY HOME Lieutenant-General Stan Savige (left) arrived in Brisbane this afternoon to attend the opening of the new Legacy home, Moorlands, at Coronation Drive. On the right is Mr. F. E. Lascelles, Brisbane president of Legacy. Moorlands will be opened by the Governor (Sir John Lavarack) on Thursday. Moorlands is a heritage-listed villa at 451 Coronation Drive, Auchenflower, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Richard Gailey and was built c. 1892 by contractor Arthur Smith. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 August 1992. Reverend Robert Morris Hunter was born in Scotland in 1839, married (1) Isabel McIntyre (1847-1890) in 1869 and (2) his deceased wife's sister Flora McIntyre in 1893. He died in Kooringa South Australia in 1894. He commenced his ministry in 1865 and served at Hamilton, Merino, Ballarat, Portland, Hamilton, Melbourne, Adelaide Archer Street, Moonta, Adelaide and Kooringa. James Venn Morgan was known affectionately as ‘The Father of Kew’. Born in Somersetshire on February 21, 1823, he sailed to Australia in April, 1851. James V. Morgan, was a member of one of the first parties to leave for the diggings. At Chewton, near Castlemaine his party tried their luck in an abandoned shaft, and in two weeks returned to Melbourne after having won 35lb weight of gold. James Venn Morgan was content with his success, and induced his partners to invest their money with him in land. After obtaining the advice of a friend, the party negotiated with Mr Samuel Watts, of Collingwood, who had recently purchased land from the Crown, and from him they took over at £15 an acre about 32 acres of land in the district that is now known as Kew. This land extended from where the Kew Post-office now stands to the locality of the Boroondara Cemetery. Here it was that Mr Morgan decided to settle, and, after having had the land surveyed, the partners apportioned it by drawing straws for the four sections into which it had been divided. One of them sold his holding later in the year for £100 an acre, and was sorry for it afterwards. In 1853 Mr. Morgan built the first house in Kew, and this house is the one in which he still resides. Here with his wife, he settled down to market gardening and dairying. So successful was the new venture that he induced his father and other members of the family to come out to Australia to assist him. Gradually the district became settled, Mr. Morgan parted with a portion of his holding, and subdivided and built on the remainder, which he still retained. In 1884 he found himself in a position to retire from active business. He celebrated his 100th birthday in 1923. He was later to die in the same year. Starting his career as a waterside worker he went on to become an official of the Waterside Workers' Federation and President the the South Melbourne ALP. In 1979 he was elected the the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Albert Park. Throughout his parliamentary career he held a number of portfolios and was a great supporter of all things related to his birthplace, Port Melbourne. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee John Sullivan, a long serving Legatee, on 2 August 197. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee John Sullivan was President in 1991, he had joined Legacy in 1983 proposed by his father-in-law Morrie Tonkin. He had served in WW2 as a Flight Lieutenant in the RAAF with Beaufort Squadrons. The Springthorpe Memorial is an elaborate late 19th century memorial located within Boroondara General Cemetery. Harold Desbrowe-Annear designed the memorial for the Melbourne doctor John Springthorpe, in honour of the doctor’s wife. Construction began in 1897, and the memorial was unveiled in 1901. On the sarcophagus is sculpted group of figures by Bertram Mackennal. Rare postcard showing details of the figurative group o n the monument and its original glass case.This close-up of two of the figures shows an angel leaning over the representation of Dr John Springthorpe’s wife.
