Comparison photo: SEPP_0610 - Main Road near Railway Station, c.1911 Shows Luther and Ada Haley’s General Store, Bakery and Tea Rooms opened September 1902 directly opposite present day Arthur Street. This was the first building in what is now Eltham’s present shopping town centre. Haley previously ran the General Store and Bakery on the corner of Main Road and York Street until his lease expired and the premises were bought by Mrs Sarah Burgoyne in 1902. Haley sold the store to Hannah Lloyd in 1917 who operated it until 1920. It then went through a succession of owners until Eric Staff purchased it in 1939. Ray Staff succeeded his father in 1954 and eventually demolished the store in 1965 opening up a new supermarket, the Eltham Big Star Food Centre. That building still stands at 929 Main Road and is the Nongkhai Thai Restaurant. On the eastern (right) side of Main Street is Haley’s Paddock, which was used on occasions for community picnics. Capable of holding 10,000 people, with ample shade and hilly surroundings it was an ideal place for any community gathering such as the State Schools’ Picnic in 1904. It was not until the early 1920s that stores started to appear between Luck and Dudley Streets. William Morris was born in Eltham in 1848 or 1849. He was married three times; his second wife had the same surname as his first so they may have been sisters. He was described as "jolly and hearty" and ran a publican's booth at the Eltham Races in 1903, reportedly doing a good trade. He was an Eltham Shire Councillor between 1897 and 1918 and was Shire President in 1911. The Evelyn Hotel was situated in Main Road Eltham, immediately opposite its competitor the Eltham Hotel. It had opened as the Fountain of Friendship Hotel by 1854, when it was described as having "twelve spacious apartments all canvassed and papered", but had changed its name by 1878. The proprietor from about 1889 until 1919 was William Morris; he was also the licensee for most of that time. (The William Morris who was a butcher at Eltham in the early 1900s was no relation.) It advertised that it had "good stables", located behind the hotel in Pitt Street, a necessity for hotels at the time. Mail coaches en route from Heidelberg to Queenstown (now St Andrews), Panton Hill and Kangaroo Ground changed horses there. It was de-licensed as a hotel in 1919 but continued to operate as a boarding house until it was destroyed by fire in 1931. William died in 1922 and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with several other family members. Medal presented for their service to their country and local district to returning local servicemen from the Great War (First World War) by the Shire of Eltham Welcome Home Committee. This medal was presented to W.H. Orford. Spr. W.H. Orford From Eltham We Honour You Great War 1914 - 1919 Whilst the war ended in 1918, many servicemen did not return home till 1919. ORFORD William Henry - Munitions Worker Number 542 William Henry Orford enlisted 1 Feb 1916 and embarked for France 25 May 1916. He was a Tunneler and was part of an operation of a group of British miners (known as "Claykickers" or “Manchester Moles”) recruited during World War I to tunnel underneath no man's land and set bombs below the German front at the Battle of Messines in June 1917. 10,000 German soldiers were killed instantly after the detonation of explosives beneath their lines. The story was depicted in the film "The War Below". Doug Orford, William's nephew recalls William saying they could hear the Germans as they tunnelled below them within metres. A month later He was wounded in action with a gun shot wound to the scalp and face in July 1917. Jane Shillinglaw was born at Merri Creek, Victoria, June 14, 1846. She had a son, Joseph Shillinglaw (1863-1865) with an unknown partner. Joseph died as a toddler. Margaret Shillinglaw was William and Jean Shillinglaw's ninth child. She was born at Northcote March 3, 1856 and died at North Fitzroy September 7, 1933. She never married. Overall, they operated in Melbourne from 1871 through at least 1910 though Carte-de-Visite photos were superseded by 1890. According to Lenore Frost's book, Dating Family Photos 1850-1920, the swathes of contrasting fabric across her abdomen is a peculiarity of 1882. Jane Shillinglaw was born 14 Jun 1846. She had a a son, Joseph Shillinglaw in 1863 and a daughter Jane Davidson in 1870 prior to her marriage to William James Sommerville in 1887. Jane's younger sister Catherine Shillinglaw was born 13 Nov 1852 at Coburg, Victoria. She married Edward Henry Bottle in 1897 This photo shows fashion and hairstyles typical of the later 1870s. Photographer Stewart & Co operated from various addresses in Bourke Street East Melbourne from 1874 through 1905. The photo is estimated to have been taken c.1878 which would make Jane 32 years of age and Catherine 26 years. There is another photo of who is believed to be Catherine Shillinglaw with Edward Henry Bottle. There are visual differences with the eyes so it is presumed this photo is of Jane. William Bear, Photographer operated from 145 Smith Street, Fitzroy from 1877 to 1882. Prior to that the address was occupied by F.C. Burman to 1876 and followed by W. Latimer in 1883 (Sands Melbourne Directory) Marg Ball suggested the fellow may possibly be a Kidd. Put side by side with Sarah Ann Shillinglaw (nee Kidd) and he certainly could be a brother. Looking at Sarah and her siblings, 2nd eldest William seems the most/only candidate given the date of the photo. William Bear only operated from 145 Smith St., Fitzroy from 1877 through 1882. The fashion/hair/whiskers suggest it is moving out of the 1870s and into the 1880s so it is fairly reasonable to suggest circa 1880 for the photo. At that time, William would be 27 – looks right. The only other two brothers, Samuel and Matthew had both died as youngsters years earlier. Further, the placement of the photo in the album on the opposite page to the only photo of Sarah suggests there is a close relationship. In this image she is depicted without any wedding ring on her left ring finger and her hair style and dress is typical of the early 1870s. Family research queries John and Sarah Watts William and Mary Watts Both families were shoemakers. John and Sarah Watts arrived in Eltham circa 1850. John Watts was recorded in the initial 1858 Eltham Roads District Board rates book living in Little Eltham, also 1859 and 1860. The property then appears to be in the name of Thomas Watts from 1861 to 1863 at least. Thomas was married to Ann. According to a Facebook contact from family researcher Rosie Watts in Queensland, the children of John and Sara were Betsy aka Elizabeth, Ann, Maria, Robert and Sarah (later Jones). Sarah was born 1850, the only child born in Australia. Sarah Watts remained in Eltham and married a man by the name Meadows. On 24 January 1860 John Watts was asaulted by a beligerant drunk (John Castle) whilst sitting at the bar of the Fountain Hotel that evening. Castle without warning grabbed Watts by the throat, pushed him over and kicked him in the head with his heavy boots. Constable Lalor was called and Castle attempted to assault him as well. Watts was helped up, was sick and was taken home by his son and a Mr Wallace. He went to bed. Watts died April 11 and his wfe Sarah advised the Coroner's inquest held April 11 that he had never left his bed from that time. Castle was charged with manslaughter. He was found guilty by jury and sentenced to 18 months hard labour on the roads. John Watts is buried in Eltham Cemetery in an unmarked grave before records were kept. Photographer Mark Joseph Allan operated from 318 Smith Street Collingwood from 1887-1901 Shillinglaw family members that were part of the Salvation Army included Elizabeth who married John Docherty in 1894, Catherine who married Edward Henry Bottle in 1897 and Jane who married William James Sommerville in 1887. CABINET 1866-1905 The Cabinet photo was introduced in 1866 in answer to a demand for a larger format photograph which could be mounted for a cabinet or on the wall. They were 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches (11.5 x 16.5 cm), more than twice the size of the cdv. They cost about twice as much as a cdv but eventually displaced them. They were not extensively produced until 1880 and had ceased by 1905.
