Vickery's Emulsion was a household furniture and leather polish comprised of turpentine and beeswax. The company was a partnership of James Stanley Vickery and Joseph Stanley Vickery trading as J. S. Vickery and Son, of Main Street, Ballarat, Victoria. Their jars were manufactured by the Bendigo Pottery and came in a range of coloured glazes manufactured in the 1900s and 1920s.A relatively common tall cylindrical jar from Bendigo Pottery manufactured for J. S. Vickery and Sons of Ballarat. In very good condition with no chips or scratches. Dates from early twentieth century. Attractive brown speckled cream glaze.Tall antique cylindrical Jar probably manufactured by Bendigo Pottery contained Vickery's Emulsion, which was used as a furniture polish and leather preservative. Jar has a yellowish cream brown speckled glaze in very good condition. Opening 4 cm. Some glaze imperfections at base of jar. Vickery's Emulsion trade mark impression found at top of cylinder just below the shoulder. Bendigo Pottery trademark impression not found on this example. Mrs Florence Margaret Tacey (nee Edwards) was the mother of Albert Arthur Tacey. She was born in 1863; died in 1943 in Camberwell. Her husband was William Tacey born in the Buckland Valley near Bright in 1857. There were many members of the Tacey family who were butchers. Various members of the family were associated with Tacey's Butchers at 629 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. According to a Context P/L heritage assessment of the property the land on which the business was built "was purchased by Edward Tacey on 16 September 1889. Edward Tacey was a butcher and the Sands & MacDougall street directory indicates that a butcher’s shop had been constructed on the site and was operating by 1890. It seems that the family lived for some time at a house located next door to the shop at 627 Canterbury Road (visible on the 1909 MMBW plan, but since demolished). On 15 June 1920 Edward Tacey transferred all three blocks of land to Joseph Tacey, most likely his son * and also a butcher, who carried on business from the same premises. Joseph Tacey died on 20 February 1933, after which administration of his estate (which included the three blocks of land) passed to his widow, Mary Dorothy Tacey." Edward Tacey (1863 - 1952) was the brother of William Tacey (1857 - 1920). The property passed to Joseph Charles Tacey (1887 - 1933), his nephew and son of William, not his son. His wife was Mary Dorothy Coates. Albert Arthur Tacey was a brother of Joseph Charles Tacey. The SHNCHC has a large framed photo collage of the Tacey butcher's shop at 629 Canterbury Road. It hung in various Tacey family-owned butcher's shops around Victoria before coming back to Surrey Hills. The donor was the daughter of Albert Arthur Tacey (1902-1959). Three copies of a Letter, dated November 5, 1936, from Sister M. Monica to Sister Mary Gonzaga, relating to her the benefits of using scalebuoys in the water to the boilers and hot water systems. It had removed scale from the pipes. The only problem they had was the scale that had fallen off blocking the traps and that soon stopped. This book was given to Bill Rogers for his 8th birthday in 1927. Arthur George (Bill) was the grandson of Joseph Rogers, a Warrnambool plumber, and the son of Arthur and Agnes Rogers. Bill Rogers (d. 1995) worked in the advertising department of the Warrnambool Standard for nearly 50 years. He married Lorna Steller and they lived in MacDonald Street in South Warrnambool. This book is of interest as it belonged to Bill Rogers, a Warrnambool resident in the 20th century. It is also of interest as an example of the type of present given to an 8 year-old boy in the 1920s. This is a black leather covered book of 208 pages. There are two sections – The Book of Common Prayer and Hymns Ancient and Modern. The cover is partly detached from the binding and there is gold lettering on the front cover and spine. The pages are gilt-edged. There is a full page black and white illustration at the beginning of the text. Joseph Harrison was born in York in the UK about 1810. At the age of twenty, the farm labourer appeared in the Lancaster Quarters Session and was convicted of stealing nineteen sovereigns. He was sentanced to hard labout in Van Dieman's Land in 1832. A collection of 20 photographs which shows different aspects of Warrnambool. In 1896 Joseph Jordan was given exclusive rights to produce a souvenir booklet for the 1896-97 Warrnambool Industrial and Arts Exhibition. The Jordan studio sold many publications such as albums, which featured local scenes, as well as postcards, and greeting cards for different occasions and portraits The Jordan studio was a significant photographic studio in Warrnambool. They produced a large volume of work which is a useful record of scenes of the Western District and Warrnambool. This Souvenir booklet was a memento of an important event in Warrnambool. When Galen Catholic College was first proposed in the early 1970s, much more building development was envisioned. This artists sketch from 1974 shows the proposed development in two stages. Stage 1, labelled in blue was actually built. The Albion Tennis Club was established in 1938. The first courts were located on two residential properties in King Edward Avenue Albion surrounded by chicken coops on either side. The first clubrooms were built and opened in 1939 by Cr. Joseph “Joe” Robert Parsons, President of the Shire of Braybrook. The club relocated to Selwyn Park in 1982. Today there is no trace of these tennis courts and the attached club rooms. This photograph provides a visual image of where the tennis courts and the club rooms were located in King Edward Avenue Albion.
