This digital image appeared in the MDNS 1937 Annual Report and depicts one of the aspects of nursing care carried out by the District Sisters of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) in a home in the suburbs of Melbourne.The Trained nurses (Nurses) of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), from its inception in 1885, provided wound care to their patients who ranged in age from the very young to the elderly. As research developed better products and dressing materials, the methods and medication applied to wounds changed. MDNS received Royal patronage in 1966 and as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), the Education department developed wound care programs, such as the Leg Ulcer Management Program to provide their Trained nurses (Sisters) with methods of best quality care. They instructed RDNS Wound Care Specialists who made assessments and provided advice and support to the District Sisters working in the field as needed. The Sisters liaised with the patient’s Doctors and Hospitals to provide information on the progress of patient’s wounds and to receive any change of wound care from the Doctors. This lamb fetus has been placed in preserving fluid. This can be formaldehyde, isopropyl or ethanol. It is important that glass jars are used, as plastic will be affected by the chemicals over time in the preserving fluid. He may have entered singularly or there may have been a Collingwood Technical School team or teams participating.When he won the medal, it was displayed at the school for a short time as an acknowledgement of his participation. When he took the medal home, his mother pinned it into the little Dunklings box, and it was kept in the box.This medal has social and historical significance. It is significant because it documents the participation of a Collingwood Technical School student in a Collingwood Harriers Teams Race in 1939. A 45kg Spanish Merino from Mt Bute at Linton, Victoria. It is a descendant of the original Spanish Merino brought to Australia by John MacArthur in 1797. John and Elizabeth MacArthur undertook breeding experiments at Camden Park, Parramatta, crossing the Spanish Merino with Bengal and Irish sheep already in the Colony. The resultant merino became the foundation of Australias sheep industry. This tin of boot polish was a common household item in the 20th century (and is still used to a lesser extent today). This tan boot polish was sold under the brand name of ‘C & D’ at the general store of Cramond and Dickson in Liebig Street, Warrnambool. John Glass Cramond and James Dickson established their business in Warrnambool in 1855 and this general store operated (firstly in Timor Street and later in Liebig Street) until 1973, making it one of the longest-running and one of the most important businesses in Warrnambool’s history. By 1868 a London agency had been established and direct imports from England began on a large scale. Many of the articles they sold, including the boot polish, were made expressly for the Cramond and Dickson store. This tin of boot polish is of great interest as an example of the goods sold by Cramond and Dickson that were made expressly for the Warrnambool store. Cramond and Dickson were one of the most important stores ever to operate in Warrnambool.This is a round metal tin originally gold-coloured and with a red tape binding to prevent its opening. The front of the tin has printing and the image of a stylized rising sun and the bottom has more printing. The bottom of the tin is indented to allow the tin to rest on the rim only. The printing is legible but much faded. The tin contains the original polish. Top: ‘Use only C & D brand of Tan Boot Polish, Cramond & Dickson, Warrnambool. Port Fairy and London’ Bottom: ‘For best results remove all dust, apply a little C & D dressing, brush briskly. Rubbing finally with a soft cloth produces a brilliant surface. Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006. Bell Punch A/sia Ltd was a subsidiary of The Bell Punch Company, itself a part of (Cash) Control Systems. The Bell Punch Company was a British company manufacturing a variety of business machines, including several generations of public transport ticket machines and the world's first desktop electronic calculator The company was founded on 5 July 1878. Shire of Phillip Island managed the Phillip Island Penguin Parade during this era, and made several improvements for visitors including the building of a kiosk for food and beverage and some souvenirs. The building was located on a bitumen area at the base of the hill along with a brick toilet block. The area was actually raised from creek bed adjacent to the bitumen area, with Little Penguin rookery either side. The Shire tendered out the contract for the running of this kiosk on a 3 yearly basis.This small public notice from a Wonthaggi newspaper at a time when no local newspaper was being published on Phillip Island, marks the time when the Shire of Phillip Island began to increase provision of tourist facilities at the Penguin Parade. The number of visitors being 100,000 for the previous year is also an excellent indication of the popularity of the Penguin Parade. Students attended Sunday School at the Kergunyah Presbyterian Church and were given prizes. The students included those aged between 8 and 12 years and included boys and girls. Sunday school was held in a little 16 foot square wooden building which came from Rocky Valley after it was no longer needed there. Ewen Wallace's father initiated and organised the move. C2011 the building was knocked down because of white ants. He passed this residence on the north side of the road. It was totally remote. GC found the juxtaposition of this little cottage with its surburban wire gate out in the remoteness of the landscape intriguing.
