Photograph, Beech Forest: NA locomotive taking coal, c.1955
To a dead end spur at Beech Forest station a locomotive depot was provided with a coal stage, ash pit and water tank as part of the original facilities of the station. Coal was transported from Colac by rail and hand-shovelled up onto the stage from an NQ truck positioned alongside. Twin water columns on the stage ends enabled two NA class or both ends of a Garratt locomotive to take water simultaneously. Beneath the trestle was the ash pit.B/W. 200mm x 271mm. Photograph - Artist's impression - Snowman at Snowlands
Mrs June Hoffman of Mount Beauty recently donated this beautiful picture. It is the original artist impression of the Snowman outside Snowlands. The Snowman was constructed in the 70's after Mr S K Pearce commissioned Polish artist/sculptor Andy Lomini. Mr Lomini is well known for his oil paintings but also created the Big Trout in Jindabyne, one of the 150 'big' things in Australia. The Snowman was carted into Falls Creek in 3 pieces on the back of a truck. This item is significant because it is the artist's impression of a major artwork commissioned for Falls Creek.A photo of the original artist's impression for a statue of a snowman which is located in Falls Creek. The snowman is wearing a scarf and a top hat and has a belt around his waist. A row of five blue buttons go down the middle of his chest. He is smoking a pipe and holding onto a broom. Three people are in the bottom left corner holding up the snowman's broom. snowman at snowlands, s. k. pearce, andy lomini, falls creek attractions -
Orbost & District Historical Society
stationery, 1930's
The Orbost area was once a large bean growing area as the fertile snowy River flats produced good quality beans. It was exported to other states of Australia. Green beans were sent to Melbourne by train and later to Sydney, either via Bombala where they were railed, or to Eden to continue the journey on fish trucks. One pound per bag was considered a good price in the early 1920's and pickers were paid one shilling and six pence. Ref: Newmerella Valley of PlentyThis stationery is significant because it was specially made for the seed bean industry which was a major industry in the Orbost district for the first half of the 20th century. .1 - 2 letterheads for Orbost Beans and Grains on white paper. .2 - a buff coloured envelope for Orbost Beans and Grains Co-Operative LtdOrbost Beans and Grains Co-operative Ltd (incorporating Gippsland Bean Cleaners)stationery correspondence orbost-beans envelope letterhead -

Photograph, Victorian Railways, Gellibrand Ballast Siding, c.1902
In 1902 a ballast siding was opened 4km south of Gellibrand to provide materials for track construction. A spur siding, with points facing Beech Forest and a capacity for six trucks, was cut into the side of a slope. Above this was erected a loading bin and chute. The stone proved to be of durable quality so the siding continued in commission after 1902 for track re-ballasting work. By the mid-1920s Victorian Railways found it more economic to use ballast from Penshurst, so the siding was closed by 1925 and the rails lifted.Photograph; B/W. Document - Short Road Ferry ticket, c.1974
From the collection of Warren DOUBLEDAY. The short Road ferry ran between the end of Williamstown Road in Port Melbourne across the narrowest section of the Yarra River to the bottom of the Strand in Williamstown. The name came from it being the 'short road' between the two places. There was a type of ferry service in operation from around 1873 which was modernised in the 20th century to take cars and trucks across the river. It was operated by two heavy chains which sank to the river bed to allow ships to pass.A single trip 15 cent ticket for crossing the Yarra River from Williamstown on the Short Road Ferry.
