St Katherine’s Church St Helena, entry gates with Church in background. St Katherine’s Church was built in 1856 (known as the Rose Chapel after the wife of Major Anthony Beale, Katherine Rose Beale). The Church was destroyed by fire in 1957 then restored. The Cemetery was initially the burial place of the Beale family but now approximately 200 people are buried there. Stephen Charman, aged 21 years arrived in Melbourne in 1842 as one of Henry Dendy's emigrants. He established purchased land in 1852 and established a market garden at Spring Grove Cheltenham with his 2nd wife Mary nee Gettens. Stephen died 1906 in Gippsland. He wrote letters to his brother Michael who had remained in England Stephen and Mary Charman were pioneer market gardeners in Moorabbin Shire 1842 and were involved in the development of Church, school and community in the area now called Cheltenham. In the 1860s and 1870s Henry Boyd Mercer selected land between Linton and Skipton at what was then known as Spring Vale, now called Pittong. He was a successful and innovative farmer. Henry Mercer and his wife Deborah, nee Sinclair, had five children, Henry, William, Hugh, Emma and Elizabeth. Elizabeth Bennett, the oldest child of William Garnsworthy Bennett and his wife Susan, née Williams, was born in 1858, and married William Todd on January 1st 1882. They had nine children, all born at Linton. Mrs. Todd was noted for her family, community and church involvements in Linton. Irini Pappas and her husband Paul Anagnostou are photographed with the captain's wife (right), Irini's father's first cousin during the visit of the SS Gratsos ship. She was one of only two women ever qualified as first mate. At the time the Women's Weekly ran a double page spread featuring her. in Greece on board a ship travelling to or from Ithaca.'George D. Gratsos - Ithaca' printed on the buoy indicates that the ship was part of the Gratsos shipping company. The shipping activities of the Gratsos family from Ithaca began in 1902, when Georgios D. Gratsos (1870–1931) bought the ship Odysseus, in partnership with the Dracoulis family, of which Gratsos' wife was a member. Gerasimos Galatis is the shopkeeper standing outside his confectionary shop at 225 Bay Street, Port Melbourne. The chocolates were home made and were artistically presented, especially at Easter. He and his wife Ellie ran the business in Port Melbourne for over thirty years and it was a very popular venue especially as it was near the former picture theatre in Port Melbourne.This was yet another example of the various businesses which early Ithacan Greek immigrants owned and ran successfully throughout the first half of the twentieth century.A sepia photograph mounted on board of a man standing outside a confectionary shop. The fruit shop photographed was owned and run by Spiros Kallinikos and was one of the many similar businesses that Ithacans, who had settled in Melbourne during the first half of the twentieth century, operated within the CBD and surrounding suburbs. Pictured us Spiro's wife Evrilikia holding her daughter Calliope together with her Spiro's sister Chrisoula Sikiotis (nee Kallinikos). A black and white photograph of two ladies standing in the doorway of a suburban fruit shop. One of the ladies is holding a little child. The display window is attractively stocked with a variety of fruit and vegetables. There are also cauliflowers stacked on the right side of the doorway, and fruit in boxes on the left.

Documents and Photograph donated by the Woodhead family. Dorothy Edhouse was the only child of James & Frances Hill, who were Sylvia Woodhead's grandparents. "James Hill (Jimmy) came to Phillip Island in 1920 and purchased the Hotel, known as Woods Family Hotel. (Later, the Phillip Island Hotel in Walpole Street, now demolished). A milestone occurred whilst in his capable hands, when he installed an electric light plant, (32 volt), the first on the Island. He also made hundreds of cement bricks, when he built his own home. Later he purchased a building in Thompson Avenue, where he established a Billiard Saloon, with a small shop attached. He died in 1937, aged 68. His only child Dorothy Edhouse, is now 95 and has made arrangements to have her ashes added to her fathers' grave." This was added to the photograph of James Hill and Frances Edith Hill - not sure what date it was compiled by Richard Woodhead. Frances died in 1960. The Victorian Division of the Australian Branch of the British Red Cross Society was formed on August 21, 1914. Lady Margaret Stanley, the wife of the Governor of Victoria, was the first president. The first Red Cross volunteers focused on supplying care parcels for sick and wounded troops. After W.W.1 the Australian Red Cross continued to care for returned servicemen. The badge was sold as a fundraiser.This item is a reminder of the significant role played by the Australian Red Cross.Round bronze badge of blue, gold. red and white. This book has been in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for many years and little is known of its origins. ‘Anne Watson’ may be Annie Watson, nee Grant (1830-1906), the wife of John Watson who came to Victoria in 1855 and had a farm in the Cudgee area. There is a reference to a ‘G. Geary’ as a member of the Belfast (Port Fairy) Choral Society in 1860. This is an early memento of settlers in the Warrnambool area and their religious adherence and, as such, is of some interest. This is a hard cover book of 391 pages. The cover is brown leather with gold lettering on the spine. The pages are gilt-edged. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, Williams Ardlie and his wife, Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool.This album is of minor interest as a record of the lives of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie, members of a prominent 20th century Warrnambool family. The photographs, especially those taken of interiors of houses, will be useful for display and research. This is a brown hard cover photograph album with 16 black and white photographs and one loose newspaper cutting. The cover has a gold decorative pattern around the edges. John Ingram, baker of Research and his wife Ada (nee Key) owned a holiday house at 9 Minifie Avenue, Anglesea. At some time between 1943 and 1949 they relocated permanently to Anglesea. It is difficult to make out the car (registration 155-405). It appears to be a roadster style with wooden spoke wheels and spare wheel mounted on boot. Photograph of a painting of Katherine Rose Beale (1795-1856), wife of Major Anthony Beale. The Beale family arrived in Port Phillip in 1839 and c.1841 established an estate named "St Helena" to the north of Melbourne. Katherine is buried in the St Katherine's Anglican Church Cemetery in Greensborough. Mary Poulter and sons in Greensborough. The boys could be William (b1865) and Arthur (b1867). Mary appears to be in mourning, her husband William died in 1888. William Poulter and his wife Mary arrived in Victoria in 1849 and settled in Greensborough in 1853. Descendants of the family still live in the area. St Katherine's Church St Helena dates from 1858. The Church was built by Major Anthony Beale in memory of his wife Katherine Rose Beale.
