Built for William and Anna-Maria Greenlaw in the early 1880s, and with interiors decorated by the Paterson Bros, Villa Alba remained in private ownership until 1949. From 1950, the house was owned by a number of institutions. By 1984, the Villa Alba Preservation Society had been formed, and three years later, the Mount Royal Hospital granted a 25-year lease to Kew Council. In 2004, the title to Villa Alba was passed by the Victorian Government to The Villa Alba Museum Incorporated. The Museum, at 44 Walmer Street, Kew, is now a cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration.This is one of a number of historically and aesthetically significant photos of the interiors and exterior of Villa Alba when it was still owned by the Mount Royal Hospital, showing twentieth century accretions and deterioration of the historic fabric of the building. Ceramic - Mug, Our Patron, 195
This ceramic tankard mug was produced for Melbourne Legacy to honour their Patron. The Patron of Legacy is usually the Governor of Victoria, since the very early days of Legacy. It appears to be taken from a photo of General Sir Dallas Brooks KCB, KCMG, DSO, KStJ., who was Governor of Victoria from 1949. The date made is unknown but it believed to be early 1950s. Similar mugs were produced to honour Legatees Stan Savige and Syd Birrell and were estimated to have been produced in late 1940's or early 1950s. A similar one was made for the Queen's coronation in 1953. The maker was the firm of EG Greenway, a pottery manufacturer, which was connected to Legatee Herb Greenway.Shows the importance of the patron that he was commemorated in a ceramic mug along with Syd Birrell and Stan Savige and the Queen.Cream ceramic mug with handle, with relief portrait of the patron of Legacy, under which is etched 'Our Patron' on one side, with a relief symbol of the Legacy Torch and Wreath of Laurel on the opposite side.'Our Patron' is etched under the relief portrait. "Glenara' was the home of Alistair Clark who lived at Bulla which is situated about 20 kms NW of Melbourne in the Deep Creek valley. He was born there in 1864 and lived there throughout his lifetime until his death in 1949. His father established the property during the mid-nineteenth century. Alister Clark was a rose grower and created the very popular 'Lorraine Lea 'rose along with other famous species. A rose garden has been established in the township of Bulla in his memory. He was also an active member of the Victorian Racing Club. The original photograph was published in the Melbourne 'Herald' on 20 August 1952 on page 5.Alistair Clark was a prominent rose grower and developed many rose species which were suitable for Victorian conditions. The homestead is a good example of Victorian architecture built in Victoria in the latter years of the nineteenth century. The house has a heritage listing in the City of Hume Heritage Study.A black and white photograph with a fine white frame, of a Victorian homestead with a a verandah across the front of the house. The Underwood Motor Manufacturing Co started making 3hp 2-stroke engines, in either marine or stationary styles from about 1946 at 135 Queensberry St, North Melbourne. By about 1949 the 3.5hp 4-stroke engine was introduced. this engine was sold by Baltic Simplex as the Simplex Challenger, replacing the RB&T built S type. By the mid 1950's the firm had shut up shop. In the Sands & McDougall directories of 1948 & 1949 they were listed as Underwood Petrol Engine Co. The following years they were back to Underwood Manufacturing Co. The two-stroke version came in such variations as marine, stationary, tank, hopper cooled and air cooled, each believed to have run on a mixture of 30 parts Standard grade petrol to one part oil. Most but not all water cooled two stroke engines feature a water circulating pump. The 3-4hp four stroke engine used petrol for starting then switched to kerosene when warmed up. Most were 3hp. From a 1947 advertisement the machine was noted with rope start, quickly detachable magneto and the angled spark plug which would have been a marine version with a clutch and hand throttle. The stationary engine had the clutch replaced by a governor. The magneto on these engines did not rotate. it was oscillated by an eccentric on the crank and a link to an arm on the magneto drive shaft. There were other variations including a hopper cooled one with a normal marine base and a chain driven magnet. Set of four photographs of Lieutenant John Williams DCM a World War 1 serviceman (refer to item 00150.1 to 00150.4). His enlistment date in the Australian Army was 3/1/1916, and his service number 22228. Williams embarked as a Bombardier with the 23rd Howitzer Brigade, 108th Battery, from Melbourne on the 20/5/1916. As Sergeant, John Williams was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous devotion to duty, particularly as a 'number 1' member of an artillery crew during various battles in France. He was particularly prominent in the battle of Passchendale Ridge during which he refused to be relieved despite being wounded and gassed. John Williams was a Frankston Primary School Headmaster from 1942 to 1949 and lived in Frankston. He died in 1962. -

Eric Juckert He worked as a potter and painter from around 1949 to 1992 in Victoria. His pottery was also sold by the department stores Myer and David Jones under the trade name “Jacqueline”.He then set up a studio at Point Road, Grossard Point, Ventnor on Phillip Island, in 1959 where he continued working there until 1992. Henning Alfred Rathjen (1903–1968) was one of the Australian-born artists who established a new pottery studio to cater for local demand and post-war innovations in art pottery. Rathjen established his pottery studio in Melbourne in 1948, producing quality slip-cast wares over the next 20 years. This ledger contains original Warrnambool Standard newspaper cuttings of the eleven articles written by Henri Worland on the early history of Warrnambool. The subject matter includes the Post and Telegraph Office, Punts over the Merri and Hopkins Rivers, Transport in the Early Days, Early Exploration, Minjah Station and the History of the Breakwater. Henri Worland (1883-1972) was Warrnambool’s most important 20th century local historian. He was the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949 and his intense interest in Warrnambool’s history led him to collect and preserve a great amount of local history material. He wrote extensively on Warrnambool’s history and gave talks on the local radio station over a period of many years.These newspaper cuttings are of interest as examples of the many local history articles written by the important Warrnambool historian Henri Worland. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has a collection of Worland’s original writings in his own handwriting. This is a ledger book with a brown-coloured cover with red binding. There is a label pasted on to the front cover with black printing on it. The ledger has indented alphabet tabs and the pages are ruled with red lines for ledger purposes but these have not been used. The ledger has been used to paste in original cuttings from the Warrnambool Standard newspaper (Henri Worland articles from the 1940s). One page contains two copies of old photographs. Book (item) - Visitor logbook, Visitors, 1907 - 1951
The book was used as a visitors book for the early Mission to Seafarers. The first date in the book is the 13th of December, 1907, although there are almost six pages of signatures before this. The last signature is dated the 28th of June, 1951. The book documents some of the most significant moments of the Central Institute: - the Opening Ceremony of the "new" Mission to Seafarers building in September 1917. - the signature of HRH Edward, then Prince of Wales, and a newspaper clipping, detailing his visit, during has Australian tour in 1920. - the visit by the Governors General including HRH the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester in 1945. Also registered: the Australian Chaplains conference attendees of both 1936 and 1949. Many supporters, ladies from the Guild and seafarers signed the book.The book is a significant record of VIP visitors to the Mission to Seafarers 1907 to 1951. It records respective Opening Ceremonies for Mission Buildings of both 1907 and 1917 and attendees. The book also documents a visit from Edward, Prince of Wales in 1920, travelling on the H.M.S "Renown". This windcheater was worn by John Barker who was the son of E J Barker who from 1949-1960 was a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB). Then from 1960-1964 was Vice Principal at SMB and was Principal of SMB from 1964-76. John completed a Diploma of Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education and a few years later a Bachelor of Engineering. John was a keen sportsman particularly enjoying hockey and sailing. He died as a result of an accident on 16 June 1994.This orange coloured cotton knit windcheater has a built-in v-shaped rib fabric inset at the top front. The photograph is from the Brian Walsh Collection 1993. Three blocks of land were purchased in 1946 by Miss F. Ritchie and Mrs H. Grimshaw in Halford St. Inverloch. Three more blocks were purchased in 1948 - 1949. A sixth block was added in 1956. Money was raised by P.F.A. members. Two buildings were purchased from the Government Disposals Authority in 1959. Construction of the camp began in October 1959. Regular working bees were held by P.F.A. members. The first camp was held at the site at Easter 1960. The camp was opened by the Moderator the Rt. Rev. A. Creighton Barr and Flinders Presbytery ministers. In 1998 the decision was taken to sell the site.
