Book, Woman's World, c1960
Vintage Australian book for the homemaker c1958. The book is published prior to granting of equal pay, affirmation of women's rights, acceptance of working mother and career woman as the norm . The book reinforces the socially accepted concept of the married homemaker and mother as perceived at the time, now the idealised concept is questioned. At the time of publication and reprints this book was envisaged to empower women. Whether' a teenager, career woman,a young married or mother' as a 'guide, philosopher, and friend' The editor Alleyne Jukes was born in Warrnambool to Charles and Mary Jukes of the Floral Farm Warrnambool. She attended Braemar Grammar School and Warrnambool High School. She lived and worked in Melbourne as a journalist and secretary living in St Kilda and Elsternwick 1949, Bentleigh 1954, Oakleigh 1963. In 1961 she gathered together a number of writers and consultants to produce Woman's World, a book designed as the woman's Bible to enable her to have access to expert advice and information about home and outside work fields.The book was hailed at the time at the time as the only work of its type produced entirely for Australian conditions and was an immediate success appealing to a wide range of readers. A similar subject book of smaller size and format has been sighted 'The People's Home Library', 1910 reprinted in 1923 by RC Barnum published by The Oceanic Publishing Company. This book has significance for Warrnambool as Alleyne Jukes was born in Warrnambool and has strong family connections to the district.A hardback reference book 'Woman's World' with a cream vinyl binding of flecked fabric outside cover and spine. Gold gilt lettering for the title and a gold gilt rose motif on the front; gold gilt lettering and publisher's name on the spine; plain back cover. The endpapers are repeated of black and white pen ink drawings showing the roles of women on varying splashes of a vairety of mono-coloured backgrounds. A general index on page 602 plus cooking index page 606 and dressmaking and sewing index page 607. The 607 pages are printed on thick, gloss white paper for 64 pages and coarser, white matt paper for the remainder. The table of contents lists a pictorial Introduction and nine chapters (courses) 'that is a 'bible' to the woman 'cares' and is vital to her as her femininity'. Decorative object - Wall Decoration, Late 19th to early 20th centuries
During the Victorian era, the period (1837-1901) in which Queen Victoria ruled England. The queen’s influence was felt throughout the world, including in the United States and Australia where Victorian values shaped society and style, especially in home décor. This period’s distinct style presents an eclectic mix of highly ornamented furniture, wallpaper, and knick-knacks. Particularly in terms of furniture, and the characteristic floral patterns and rich, contrasting colours, wall hanging that enjoyed the height of its popularity during the Victorian era were of the spiritual type with an either embroidered or punched paper religious motto or bible quote. Mottoes were commonly hung high up on the wall or in an area of prominence, to remind the viewer of their important message, such as “He Leadeth Me” and “Honesty, Industry, and Sobriety.” Short and pithy, they embodied the ideals of Victorian society. Technological advances contributed to the boom of religious mottoes whereas before the Industrial Revolution home décor of this sort was handmade and therefore minimal, now consumers could purchase and fill their homes with all sorts of mass-produced ephemera goods similar to the subject item. Many of these mass-produced period pieces still exist today, often in their original frames, ceramic, or paper formats. Flagstaff maritime museum has many examples of mottoes on display that serve to reflect the period in which values of home, faith, and Christianity were very prominent in everyday Victorian society.An item that reflects the social values and attitudes of the late Victorian era that was used to promote good Christian and moral values in many households. Clothing. Navy blue velvet, on a brass frame, with a 34 cm long brass chain. A ''push-button'' 1.2 cm diameter, fastens the bag. A decorative, oval brass loop is attached to the centre of the frame. The velvet fabric is tightly gathered onto the frame. One side panel of the bag is exquisitely embroidered in a ''corded'' floral design, in pink, blue and greens. The bag is lined with a smokey blue watermark silk, with a flat pocket on one side. Objects. Clothes brush is oval in shape, with a polished wooden base, and black bristles. Shaped to a rounded point at each end. Bristles 2.5 cm long. Nine rows of bristles. Make-up brush bears Chinese writing on the handle, 23.5 cm long with 6.5 cm long white hairs forming the brush. Hairs are held in an ebony cup shape fitting, attached to the handle. An ebony top-knot completed with a red silk ribbon loop finishes the top of the handle.Hair comb: Tortoise shell, with three 7 cm long teeth, which unfortunately are broken from the fan-shaped decorative top. Back hemline is slightly shirred to nip in the 67 cm waistline, which is peaked at the cntre front. ''Leg-o-mutton'' type sleeves are gathered at the shoulder, and above the elbow, and finished with an 8 cm band of beading and sequin embroidery and a 4.5 cm black silk frill, and a frill of black lace, with an exquisite fruit and floral woven pattern. Clothing - CREAM SILK EVENING CAPE (RELATED TO 11400.842)
Cream silk, woven in a jacquard style, featuring a floral design. Fully lined with cream silk satin. A 4cm deep, stand-up mandarin style collar. Eight metal hook and eyes fasten the front in a concealed way. Heavy cording, finished with pearl trimmed tassels,a double inverted pleat, 22cm long at the centre back hemline. Three darts at shoulders giving a 'sleeve-like' shape. Lower edges of which are elaborately corded. A 12cm'slit' at the lower edge seam with the front panel gives more flexibilty to the wearer. Tassel head and decorative 1.5cm ''ball'' are woven in a ''turks head'' style. Graham WOOD Wartook Pottery was set up in the early 70s by Graham Wood, and was sucessful for nearly 25 years. It then moved to Halls Gap (The Grampians, Victoria), and the name was changed to Jimmy's Creek Pottery in 1998. The pottery conitnued under that name until 2003. when cheap imports hurt the business. Hand thrown ceramic canister with 'Gum Leaf' design. According to decorator Wendy McGuiness all decoration was made and applied by hand - an extremely time consuming activity. Texture to the body of each piece was created by using a piece of coral. Tenmoku glaze was applied to the top of the pieces, with iron oxide to the main body. This was the first of the Wartook range that sold commercially from around 1987 all over Australia. At the height of production Wartook Pottery had 5 employees, including a new wheel potter (who was adept at creating the pieces as Graham had done before). This photograph shows one of the aspects of nursing care carried out by the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS). It shows wound care being given by a Sister to a patient in her own home. The bandage being applied is called a 'Blue line bandage'. which gives firm pressure to the ladies leg.The Trained nurses of the Melbourne District Nursing Society, MDNS, from its inception in 1885, provided wound care to their patients who ranged in age from the very young to the elderly. As research developed better products and dressing materials the methods and medication applied to wounds changed. MDNS received Royal patronage in 1966 and as Royal District Nursing Service, RDNS, the Education department developed programs, such as Wound Care Program and the Leg Ulcer Management Program, to provide their Sisters with methods of best quality care. The Sisters liaised with the patient’s Doctors and Hospitals to provide information on the progress of patient’s wounds and to receive any change of wound care from the Doctor. RDNS introduced Wound Care Specialists who did assessments and provided advice and support to the District Sisters working in the field. The Sister is supporting the elderly lady as she takes her for a walk on her veranda. The RDNS winter uniform at that time was a blue/grey skivvie worn under a V neck, tunic style, blue/grey herringbone winter material frock. The RDNS insignia is on the upper left of the frock.From the founding of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) in 1885, known as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) from 1966, the rehabilitation of patients to insure they were able to live independently in their own homes was at the forefront of care given by their Trained nurses (Sisters). As well as teaching and supervising the use of equipment, the Sisters taught them safe transfer techniques. These techniques were also taught to family members to enable them to care for their loved ones. Mr. W.W. Roach is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) and is sitting in his office at RDNS Headquarters, 452 St. Kilda Road, Melbourne. Mr. W.W. Roach became CEO of RDNS in January 1971, and soon after started an appeal for funds, as well as organizing and distributing printing material advertising the services available from the Royal District Nursing Service. After almost 13 years with RDNS he retired in December 1983. During his time as CEO, RDNS grew from 6 regional centres with 182 on the staff to 14 centres with a staff of 452, and the Education Department relocated to a nearby building.Black and white photograph showing Mr. W. This item is a photograph album that would have been owned by a person or family in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. In most cases (but not in this one) family photographs would have been mounted in the pages and kept as part of a family’s history. Albums such as this one, with photographs, would then become family heirlooms and treasured as such. They would have been expensive to buy at the time so were the province of the more affluent. This album, in very good condition, is beautiful, aesthetically-pleasing and redolent with the history of earlier times. This album is retained as a beautiful example of the type of photograph album that the more affluent members of society would have owned over a 100 years ago. This is a leather covered photograph album. The cover is brown with ornamental floral scrolls and ornamental gold panels. Some of the gold etching and some of the leather areas have worn away. The spine has ridged gold bands with the gold etching heavily faded. The metal clasp that closes the pages is made of silver (tarnished) and is of a decorative pattern. The sixteen pages are made of heavy stiffened cardboard and have centre cut-outs (to contain photographs). These cut-outs are oval and rectangular (arched at the top) in shape and are outlined in gold. On every second page, the cut-out is decorated with sprigs of flowers delicately painted in colour. The pages are gilt-edged. There are three loose sheets of paper which look to be original backing pieces for photographs. A black cotton tie pouch with embroidered yellow flowers and green leaves on two sides and pink flowers and green and white leaves on the other two. The pouch has a pink satin border and a pink bow on the fold, as well as two interior pockets and two pink ties (one detached). The pouch contains a shadow apron with a floral pattern and a lace border and it also has a separate beaded waistband. There is also a small satin sachet with the letters "J S T" embroidered in pale blue with a scalloped edging on the gold coloured side and a gold and white wreath embroidered on the crimson side with a white zig-zag embroidered edging. A set of two spent ammunition rounds complete with projectile, which are souvenirs of World War 1. These are from the 1 inch Nordenfelt machine gun, the projectiles are made from solid steel with a brass jacket, have an exposed steel tip and have a groove near the base. Both the brass cartridge case and the projectile are highly polished and have been chromed (?). These are examples of trench art having been engraved with floral patterns and the words "to Fred from NL". These items were owned by Frederic Harley MM, s/n 910, a WW1 Artillery Gunner in the 36th Australian Heavy Artillery Group who served in France. He enlisted in Frankston and lived in Frankston after returning to Australia. Sewing machine, portable, hand operated, with Premier logo. Has folding crank handle, body painted black with floral design, wooden base and separate wooden cover with lock. Base has compartment with accessories, covered by curved ended, sliding wooden panel. Decorative linework on side, carvings on each corner. Wooden handle on cover is carved in rings, folds down. Below handle is decorative inlaid pattern. Serial number on plate at back of machine. Accessories include 13 attachments, key (broken), screwdriver, sewing machine needle, razor blades (2) and buttons. Attached to inside of case is a square of paper with a number on it. Instruction book for Singer Sewing Machines is included. Also with machine are white tailor's chalk and a cut out, fabric pocket with tissue paper pattern pinned to it.Serial number "579200" is stamped into plate at back of machine. Clothing. Infant's cream coloured silk coat with yoke front and back. Fold over collar (12 cm) with embroidered flowers on the front with embroidered zig zag edging. Round neckline with casing threaded with 1.8 cm patterned silk ribbon. Yoke sections lined with cotton fabric. Long sleeves gathered all shoulders, with embroidered pattern at wrist with 1.7 cm lace trim. Full length front opening with embroidered zig zag edging that continues around hemline of garment. Clothing. All over floral cotton dress, in a ''shirt-maker'' style. Short sleeves, high round neck at back, and pointed revers at front. Inserted band at front waistline, with a pointed overlap, shaped to 3.5 cm wide stitched down around front. Front opening bodice has a four press-stud closure, and two 1.75 cm white plastic buttons, sewn over the closure. Buttons impressed with a ridged pattern. Two darts on either side of lower edge of bodice, one dart from shoulder on either side of bodice. Six gores in skirt. Probably home stitched. Clothing, White cotton infant's christening gown. High round neck. Front and back bodice. Front of bodice has a V shaped centre lace insert dropping 2 cm below waist. Neckline edged with gathered lace. Neckline and waist have casings with cotton tape ties tied at back opening 29 cm. Long sleeves with decorative cord at wrist and edged with 1 cm lace at hem. Lace cap sleeves overlay long sleeves. Tightly gathered skirt at waist. Centre front of christening gown has inverted V shaped insert with floral embroidered pattern in lower section. Royal District Nursing Service (now known as Bolton Clarke)

This photograph is taken in the home of the Mother and babe and shows a RDNS Sister who is visiting to give the mother and babe Post-natal care. Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) had a Domiciliary Infant and Maternal Care (DIMC) service which gave Post-natal care to new born mothers and babes in their homes following their early discharge from hospital, or if required for other reasons. In August 1893 Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), commenced a Midwifery Service with Nurse Fowler, who was trained in General nursing and Midwifery nursing, being the first Midwife employed. Mothers were assessed for suitability of a home birth or if they required delivery at the Women’s Hospital. The Midwife worked in conjunction with the Doctors at the Women’s Hospital and if a complication arose before or after birth the patient was transferred to their care. Following birth, the Midwife gave Post-Natal care to both the mother and babe commencing with visits twice a day. In 1898 the service ceased due to lack of funds but recommenced in 1906, and in the August 1925 Annual Report the number of MDNS home births was recorded at 478. MDNS built the After-Care Home and a pioneering Anti-Natal Clinic was opened in 1930. The last Ante-Natal clinic was held there in December 1951 and the MDNS Midwifery service ceased in February 1952. In 1964 MDNS commenced a Post-Natal service with General and Midwifery trained MDNS Sisters working from a room on the ground floor at the Footscray Hospital Nurses quarters, and visiting early discharged Footscray Hospital maternity cases at home. Later, as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), this service was extended and renamed as Domiciliary Infant and Maternal Care, (DIMC) service operating from most Centres and visiting early discharged, often 24 hours after birth, maternity cases from hospitals to give Post-natal care to the mother and babe. Many of the RDNS Sisters who worked in DIMC also had their Infant Welfare Certificate, though Midwifery trained nurses also visited. Graham WOOD Wartook Pottery was set up in the early 70s by Graham Wood, and was sucessful for nearly 25 years. It then moved to Halls Gap (The Grampians, Victoria), and the name was changed to Jimmy's Creek Pottery in 1998. The pottery conitnued under that name until 2003. when cheap imports hurt the business. Hand thrown ceramic bowl with 'Gum Leaf' design and the words 'pot pouri'. According to decorator Wendy McGuiness all decoration was made and applied by hand - an extremely time consuming activity. Texture to the body of each piece was created by using a piece of coral. Tenmoku glaze was applied to the top of the pieces, with iron oxide to the main body. This was the first of the Wartook range that sold commercially from around 1987 all over Australia. At the height of production Wartook Pottery had 5 employees, including a new wheel potter (who was adept at creating the pieces as Graham had done before). Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: PETTICOAT, Late 1800's early 1900
Clothing. Very fine cotton petticoat with a fitted bodice, and dropped waistline. Back opening fastened with six 1 cm diameter buttons - three are fabric covered - (possibly the original buttons) and three plastic ''pearl'' buttons. The square neckline is outlined with 2.5 cm deep cotton lace inserted with 1.5 cm wide satin ribbon tied in a bow at the centre back and front. A row of very fine cotton lace, 1.5 cm deep then edges the square neckline, and also the arm holes. The back bodice is shaped in six panels, and front bodice is shaped in three panels. Three panels of embroidered cotton lace extends from the front neckline to the bustline. Outer panels are 5.5 cm wide and 7 cm long, while centre panel is 11 cm long and 5.5 cm wide. Each of these panels is outlined with the 2 cm wide cotton lace. From the dropped waistline, a 2.5 cm wide cotton insertion lace is threaded with 1.5 cm wide satin ribbon. The skirt is lined with fine cotton, finished at the lower edge with a 5 cm wide gathered cotton frill,and an over- frill, 14 cm deep of spotted tulle, edged with a 1.5 cm band of cotton lace. The outer skirt is spotted tulle in four bands- separated by four 3.5 cm wide bands of floral patterned lace. The hemline is trimmed with an eleven cm deep band of floral lace with a lower scalloped edge. The under-skirt is made with nine gored panels, and has a 5 cm deep lightly gathered frill at the hemline.costume, female underwear, petticoat.
