This container is of minor interest as an example of a household item of the past and is kept for display purposes. This is a small silver-coloured metal container with a lift-up lid. Negative - Photograph, Diamond Creek in Flood, c.1916
Original information recorded with this image suggested the date was 1918 however that was not a significant flood year for the the Diamond Creek at Hurstbridge. Of more significance was 1916. This scene is understood to be somewhere near Wattle Glen and Hurstbridge. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years.Digital image 4 x 5 inch B&W Negshire of eltham pioneers photograph collection, hurstbridge, wattle glen, floods, diamond creek (creek) -

Drinking Mug (Melk Beker)
Liberation Day still looms large in the Dutch consciousness and would have done even more so a mere 10 years after the event. All kinds of commemorative articles were produced.A smallish mug used for drinking milk. It is decorated with items celebrating 10 years since the Liberation from German occupation. There is no handle.Dutch coat of arms including the words "Je Maintiendrai" (I will overcome) - all in orange. Two flags protrude - seemingly from the lions' paws. The reverse view shows a colourful scene of celebrating children one of of whom is being carried by an Allied Armies soldier. A pennant has the words:"1945 5MEI 1955" in orange. Below the scene are the words "10e BEVRIJDINGSDAG" (10th Liberation Day) in blue. -

Kitchen Equipment, salad servers, c1900
Tthe key letters “EP”, represent “electroplated” or “electroplating”. The other letters often represent some other metal. For example the most common designation, EPNS, means “electroplated nickel silver”. All these designations indicate that the piece in question is made of silver plate. Electroplating involves placing an extremely thin layer of silver on the surface of the piece. The resulting silver content is very small. The remainder of the piece is made of some more common metal such as copper. The value of such pieces most often is not based on silver content. It’s based more on the design and construction of the piece. spectacles and spectacle cases, late 19th early 20th century
This collection of glasses and cases was donated by Miss Connie Cruickshank. She was part of the family of Orbost's first doctor, Dr James Kerr. As the 19th Century came to a close, more and more people wore their eyeglasses everyday. A popular style of inexpensive, everyday spectacles was the pince-nez. French for "pinch nose," the pince-nez was first developed in France circa 1840 and began to be imported after the 1850s. Pince-nez have no temples, but are fit snugly on the bridge of the nose. Pince- nez could be uncomfortable to wear and broke often from falling off the nose. These items demonstrate how glasses' styles have changed over time. One pair of pince-nez glasses and its brown leather case shaped to fit. One solid black wooden case with a small hinged door at one end. One blue/black case with the words A A Abotomey 14 Carpenter Street Middle Brighton in gold lettering. Five pairs of spectacles, one with blue coloured glass with crack in one lens.A A Abotomey 14 Carpenter Street, Middle Brightonspectacles spectacles-cases pinz-nez -

magazines, The Lady's Companion, 21.1.1911 ; 25,11,1916
Women's magazines developed rapidly through the 1800's reflecting marketing and social changes. Publications evolved from being journals aimed at the middle class to cheaper, chattier more domestic magazines more widely available. Alice Letitia Swan was the daughter of Edward Swan (tinsmith and plumber at Orbost) and Emma Dinah Jefferson. Alice married Herman Oswald (Ossie) Wehner (blacksmith, Orbost) on 4-4-1923. She was born in 1899 in Omeo and died 14-6-1979, aged 80 in Orbost.(info. from John Phillips)These are early 20th century examples of English women's magazines. They give practical advice on needlework and they evidence the widespread interest in contemporary fashion. In doing so they show what were the fashionable, but broadly affordable, women's and children's clothing styles of their day. These magazines also reflect women's interests in fiction at that time. Two magazines, titled The Lady's Companion. 2424.1 was printed on 21.1.1911 and cost one penny. 2424.2 is dated 25.11.1916 and is titled Leach's Lady's Companion and has a pink cover. Both contain illustrations of the current fashions, interesting facts and selected fiction. 2424.2 : on back in red pen - Miss Alice Swan Nicholson St Orbostwomen's-magazines lady's-companion swan-alice -
