Postcard, House with women and children on verandah, 21 Dec 1915, 1915
... House with women and children on verandah, 21 Dec 1915 ...A woman, an elderly woman and two children pose on the verandah of a Federation style home. On the back of the postcard is written: "21-12-15 To wish you and all. A Happy Christmas, and all good wishes for the new year from Mrs Green and M. Mills". This family is possibly related to the Rev Wm Green who was associated with St Margaret's Church Eltham at around this time. Evelyn Observer and Bourke East Record, Friday 6 March 1914, page 2 A very pleasant social gathering was held by the Glee Club in the Church of England schoolroom on the evening of last Thursday. An interesting programme of music, varied by a very amusing dialogue by Glee Club members; made an enjoyable evening. After the programme was finished, and before refreshments were served, Mr, Gilsenan, on behalf of the Glee Club and the visitors, expressed their good wishes to Rev. Wim. Green, Mrs. Green, and Miss Mills, who were leaving on the 3rd inst. for a visit to the old country. Mr. Green responded, reciprocating the good wishes expressed. The gathering broke up to the strains of "Auld Lang Syne." Evelyn Observer and Bourke East Record, Friday 11 December 1914, page 2 The Rev. Wm Green, Mrs. Green, and Miss Mills; who have been on a nine months' trip to Europe, returned to Melbourne by the "'Morea" on Monday and out to Eltham the same day. As the rev. gentleman only left England a few weeks since and the continent just before war broke out, he ought to have some reminiscences worth listening to; His return is welcome both to his church, and the community generally, the more so he being the only resident clergyman in the neighbourhood. Evelyn Observer and Bourke East Record , Friday 11 June 1915, page 3 The Rev. Wm. Green, who has been in charge of St. Margaret's Anglican church here for some eleven years, resigned to take charge of the Church of England " Messenger". and work in connection with the ? about Melbourne. He is to be succeeded in Eltham by the Rev, ? Sapsford, of North Brighton. Printed postcard with faded photograph on frontInscribed back: "21-12-15 To wish you and all. A Happy Christmas, and all good wishes for the new year from Mrs Green and M. Mills" Also inscribed in pencil - "V. Photo album, Dedication of Eltham War Memorial by His Exc. the Governor of Vic., General Sir Dallas Brooks, K.C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., K.StJ., on Friday 16th November, 1951, 1952c
... ., K.StJ., on Friday 16th November, 1951 ...On November 11th 1929 the Shire of Eltham War Memorial Tower at Kangaroo Ground was opened. It is regarded as one of Melbourne’s most outstanding lookout towers. It commands a magnificent 360 degree panorama from Kinglake across the Diamond Valley to Macedon and the You Yangs. It is built on a peak which was once a volcano, 237 metres above sea level. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people. There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. At first R.S.L. branches opposed the idea, but it was realised that this use could combine with its use as a tourist attraction, and would ensure its maintenance for the future, Today the Kangaroo Ground tower provides one of the best views around Melbourne and is a fitting memorial to those who died in two world wars. Invitation, Eltham Living and Learning Centre "Goat Shed" - invitation to official opening on 30 May 1991, 1991
... to official opening on 30 May 1991 ...Background to the two openings of the "Goat Shed": Following a need to clean up some of the old L&L Centre buildings, in 1989 Council decided to enclose the remaining goat shed in a steel truss frame for use as a store room. Claire Fitzpatrick, who had run animal husbandry and goat classes on the site from the 1975 opening of the L&L Centre, was invited by the Committee to officiate at the naming of the new building on 3/12/1989. Following a fire of the stables/workshops on 8/5/1990 (which had to be cleared off the site) Council/Committee decided to use the $15000 insurance money to upgrade/refurbish the 1989 building to replace classrooms lost in the "stables fire". This refurbished Goat Shed was officially opened on 30/5/1991 by Cr. Peter Graham, Shire President.
