The site of the former Kew Congregational Church was the earliest 'built' place of religion in Kew. An earlier building by Charles Vickers was replaced by a new brick church designed by Albert Purchas. Following the creation of the Uniting Church, the church at 30 Walpole Street was declared redundant and demolished to make way for the Bodalla Nursing Home (itself later demolished).Faded colour photograph of an entrance door of the Kew Congregational Church in Walpole Street (Dem. 1978/9). St Mary's Catholic Church, cnr Main Road and Henry Street, Eltham was opened/blessed October 13, 1912. The wooden church was built to replace an earlier brick church also known as St Mary's (1865-1912), which had been situated on the main road near present day Wingrove Park. The church and land cost £1,400 (Evelyn Observer). The wooden church was destroyed by fire in 1961. Record includes a photo print copy of image as illustrated in the 'Diamond Valley News', 4 Feb 1998, p 31.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Note the extensive cracking of the mortar and bricks in the front facade near the portico entrance. The original St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church (1865-1912) was built of clay brick with buttress walls and a slate roof on the corner of Fordhams Road and Maria Street (Main Road), Eltham South, opposite the present-day Wingrove Park. It was blessed on September 3, 1865. With the arrival of the railway in 1901 and the town centre moving closer to the station, the decision was made to relocate the site of the church to its present-day location on Henry Street at the corner of Main Road. A new timber weatherboard church, also called St Mary's was erected and blessed on October 13, 1912. The church and land cost £1,400 (Evelyn Observer). The original brick church It was demolished in the 1920s and the bricks and windows were recycled to build a dairy on the Brinkkotter farm at Research. As the title states this book provides sketches of Melbourne life in light and shade. It was written in 1877 and published by George Robertson . It is one of a series and this edition covers the following: A night in the model lodging -House, A day in the Immigrants' Home, A morning at the Hospital, Three days in the Benevolent Asylum, Our Lunatic Asylums, Sixpenny restaurants and The Theatre Vestibules. Throughout all he comments on the social situations and dilemmas in which he finds himself and which others must endure.The Vagabond Papers provides a valuable record of life in Melbourne in the 1870's. This book was awarded to Lucie Mary Marshall in 1890 as first prize in Botany. Lucie enrolled at Clarendon Ladies' College in 1882 at the age of 8. In the original register father's name is listed as Samuel, and under parent/guardian address is listed: Mrs Williams 5 Dana St Mrs Wright Armstrong St L. Edwards Mair St. It also notes that Lucie married and became Mrs. Walt Davies residing in Warrnambool. Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in red cloth with gilt and black illustrations on front cover and spine.
