Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. During this time, the Boyds purchased this set of melamine kitchen canisters. They were used for flour, sugar, rice and biscuits etc. Both Robin and Patricia liked melamine, and also had melamine serving dishes. The Boyd family recalls this frying pan being used, but not sure of where it was located. The kitchen drawer where this frying pan is currently located was the toaster drawer. The drawer has a power point in it. "The drawer was pulled out and the drop down front lowered for toasting. When shut, no toaster was in sight! The Boyds brought this vitamiser from their Camberwell home. Mandie Boyd, Robin and Patricia's eldest daughter, has very vivid memories of this gadget. "It made everything from milkshakes for us to mayonnaise, stuffing for chicken, soups, but especially I remember Robin in the kitchen using it to make daiquiris, endless ice, rum and lemon juice crushed and blended in the good old Vitamiser. He was wearing an amazing pale grey suit. American fabric beautifully cut, must have been synthetic, and had flecks of a darker grey through it, sounds hideous and was “of the time”. His American cotton business shirts were also beautifully tailored, with loads of room to move your arms unlike the daggy Aussie shirts." Edith Susan Boyd, Robin’s mother, had a wonderful selection of earthenware crockery storage containers in her pantry, a huge walk-in room with open shelves off the kitchen. Mandie Boyd, Robin and Patricia's eldest daughter, has very vivid memories of this meat mincer, her favorite gadget. "Every Sunday until I was about 12 (mid-1950s), there would be roast lamb with all the trimmings, good homemade mint sauce, roast potato and pumpkin, parsnip, tomato and onion pie with breadcrumb topping, fresh green peas and gravy. Monday night was Shepherd’s Pie, and I looked forward to it. The cold meat was cut up and fed through the mincing machine fastened to the table at Riversdale Rd. I don't remember it ever coming out at Walsh Street. Maybe Patricia was over cold roast lamb at that stage. I loved turning the handle and watching the meat squidge out, could hardly call it mince, some onion and lastly a slice of bread to push the bits through. Then the mincer all came apart, was washed and put away until next Monday. The meat and onion tossed with leftover gravy, mash on top, loads of butter, etched with a fork tine and baked in the oven. Robin Boyd had the sound system put in by a friend who ran the iconic Thomas’ Music in the city of Melbourne. The Boyd family thinks that Robin designed the facade and logo for Thomas’ Music. Penleigh Boyd recalls "there was no 'hi-fi' record player in the living room until about 1963. Robin always had the speaker holes in the floating joinery unit but couldn’t afford the necessary equipment till years after we had moved into the house. Apparently one time some guest looked at the speaker holes (they had matchstick blind screening) and asked Robin what type of equipment he had. That was enough for Robin, and he immediately had a system installed - the one that is still there." The floor covering in the living/dining room was originally seagrass matting as seen in the Strizic photographs of 1959 and 1963. This was replaced after the Boyd's saw a large cream rug floor covering at the Shelmerdine's house and liked it. It was purchased from Myer. In 2007, that rug was found to be moth-eaten and treated and put into storage.
