The SECV constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme during which time the Kiewa Valley Group was formed and joined the Institute of Engineers. Horace H. C. Williams was in charge of the the KHES.H.H.C. Williams was the engineer in charge of the KHES. Significant in that the photo is of white men in suits all holding a position of importance. Washing Machine, Estimated 1800's
Hand operated washing machine. Works on same principal as our model on display. Made of a metal drum with supporting metal legs. It includes a metal handle with an agitator. A piece of wood is bolted to the side of the washing machine for mounting a hand wringer. Such a machine was ideal for homes that did not have electricity. -

Postcard - National Fitness Camp at Howman's Gap
These photographs were taken in and around Falls Creek by Samuel Keith Pearce and printed for him as a foldout postcard by NuColor Vue. The postcards state they were printed for S. K. Pearce Pty. Ltd of Tawonga and Mount Beauty. Samuel Keith Pearce was born on 24 June 1917 in Armadale, Victoria. By the late 1940s he owned the Mt Beauty Supermarket, Newsagency, Drapery and Hardware store at Mount Beauty and also a store at Tawonga in partnership with his brother Gordon Cathew Pearce. For some time, they operated as Pearce Brothers. In the early 1960s Keith also opened a mini mart In Falls Creek. As well as being a keen photographer and an astute businessman, Keith Pearce was a well-known identity in the Kiewa Valley, making many contributions to the development of the area over a long period. This included serving as a member of the Bright Shire Council for many years. He worked hard to promote the interests of the Upper Kiewa Valley. As a sign of recognition and appreciation for his contribution to the community, the park opposite the grocery store in Mount Beauty was named the SK Pearce Gardens in his honour. Samuel Keith Pearce died on 7 July 1994 in Mount Beauty, VictoriaThis collection of postcards and image is significant because they were commissioned by a highly successful business in Falls Creek, Victoria.A high definition photo of the skiers walking in front of the National Fitness Camp at Howmans Gap. The Camp was run by the Victorian State National Fitness Council. Initially the camp was leased from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). Type of coat worn by SEC tram crews in Ballarat from the mid 1930s through to 1971. Demonstrates the SEC Uniform in 1921. Helmet Safety
Safety helmets were worn during construction work on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme and during its operation. Each group of workers had a different coloured helmet to identify their role.A pale green fibre glass oval shaped helmet with a small rim and with hard white plastic 'netting' inside - shaped with 6 pieces coming towards the outside from an oval in the centre. These are attached with screws. Around the circumference of the head is a plastic adjustable piece covered by soft plastic in the front. This has a wide cord attached that fits under the chin.On the outside front: a triangle colored in black with "operator" underneath. Bottle - Medical
This bottle was used in the Tawonga District General Hospital which was built in the 1950's specifically for the increase in population due to the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. It was used for first aid for the treatment of bruises and joints.Small clear brown glass hexagonal bottle with black screw lid. The lid is grooved for easier opening. On the 3 front sides is a torn white label with red writing, green borders and at the bottom (of the label) black back ground and white writing. On the back is heavily embossed 'Not To Be Taken' and on each side face embossed 4 vertical lines. (to indicate poison). This kerosene iron was used before electricity was available. The iron was self heating and required a pump to pressurise it. It came with instructions, full measuring can and a wrench / key. Meteorological Conditions - Bogong High Plains
The amount of rain and snow during the year and over the years was recorded regularly. This was done at several sites and was important for the building of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme which involved dams, power stations and racelines.The KHES depended on accurate and detailed measurements of rain and snow on the Bogong High Plains in order to plan and construct high functioning infrastructure. Insulates electrical wire/cable which is attached in the groove. Screwed into the cross arm of a power pole. Non conductive so electricity doesn't short out to the ground.Used on power poles in the Kiewa ValleyClear blue tinted glass insulator - bell shaped at the closed end. Deep, wide groove towards the wide open end. The wide end is inscribed and opens to a decorated edge of small balls around the circumference. Inside there is a cylinder which is threaded for screwing onto a power pole. Piston Pump - Water
Pumps were used to move water from one place to another. This one was connected by a belt to an engine that would drive it. Electricity is used to drive pumps nowadays.This pump was used in the original Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.Blue steel and brass water pump bolted onto a wooden base. The stand of the pump is rectangular at one end and round at the other. The rectangular end has a hollow brass cylinder extending up. Inside the brass cylinder is a steel piece with a wide brass cylinder attached at right angles at the top. This is attached at the top to a blue steel 'T' at which the other end has a blue (on the inside) wheel with four curved spokes. When the wheel is turned the steel piece inside the cylinder moves from side to side. On either side of the cylinder, at its base are outlets with screw on fittings.
