under bodice, late 19th-early 20th century
Under-bodices were first made of silk, though cotton was the fabric of most underwear from the second half of the century. These bodices were worn to protect against wear and soiling but more often for modesty. Undergarments such as this item were seen as essential to wear under blouses. This item is an example of a handcrafted item and reflects the needlework skills of women in the early 20th centuryA hand made white cotton woman's undergarment (chemisette) - an underbodice. It is of fine cotton with lace insertions at back and front. It has four buttons for the front opening. The bottom is gathered.women's-undergarments chemise bodice -

Photograph - Lithographic Squadron’s Printing Presses at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Bendigo, c1980s
This is a set of 19 photographs of the four types of printing presses in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo in the late 1980s. The Original Heidelberg Printing Press features in photograph 6188.1P. It was a robust and well-made single colour lithographic offset press that was in service at the Army Svy Regt for decades. Its primary use was for initial training and rapid response tasks, such as single pass overprints over existing print stock. See item 6062.4P for more information and photographs of the Heidelberg press. The Komori Newkoni Printing Press features in photographs 6188.2P to 6188.6P. It was a four-colour offset press in service at the Army Svy Regt from 1975 to the late 1980s. Intended improvements to productivity were not realised as it was unreliable, was very cramped between decks and there were safety concerns for the operators. See item 6063.5P for more information and photographs of the Komori press. The Planeta Polygraph Printing Press features in photographs 6188.7P to 6188.11P. It was a two-colour offset press in service from 1976 to 1994 and was mainly used to print Naval and medium format RAAF charts. It was more reliable than the Komori Printing Press however procurement was difficult when spare parts were required. It was replaced by the larger format Roland 8047B four colour Printing Press. See item 6064.9P for more information and photographs of the Planeta press. The Ultra-MAN-III Printing Presses feature in photograph 6188.12P to 6188.19P. The two presses were a standard map size format and were introduced in June 1962 as two-colour offset presses with improved safety features. Productivity greatly improved with the addition of a third colour deck in 1968, as the two presses could print a five-colour standard topographic map in two rather than the three passes before the upgrade. See item 6065.10P for more information and photographs of the Ultra-MAN-III presses. They were replaced with a single Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 five colour Printing Press in 1990. See item 6136.30P for more information and photographs of the Speedmaster press. This is a set of 19 photographs of the four types of printing presses in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo in the late 1980s. The photographs were on 35mm negative film and scanned at 96 dpi. Jar Stone Earthenware, circa early 1900s
This type of "stone" jar drinking container was used before glass and later plastic material made it "out of date" as a drink container. The qualities of the glazed pottery (stone) drinking containers made from this natural thermal insulation material was to contain the liquid to a prescribed temperature either hot or cold, as required. This was particularly important in rural environments that lacked adequate refrigeration means. The rural regions where the last areas in Australia where this type of drinking container remained in use. The late 1960's saw a revival of the basic rural ethos by the "hippie" culture of going to basic survival non "commercial" living. This particular stone jar drinking container was also a method of advertising for a Wodonga Stone masonry manufacturer. It is both relevant and significant to the Kiewa Valley because it highlights the type of industry that has breached the evolutionary trend for cheaper "throw away" drinking containers. Although this particular type of container is limited to quality liquids and it is still available in most rural sectors of the Australian "bush" environment. This stone/earthenware jar has a lip 250mm in length and 150mm thick. This lip will allow the thumb and forefinger to be used to grip the container for either pouring its contents out or securing it for any movement. The external glazed surface may become slippery when wet. The jar is heavy even when empty and would be too heavy for small children to carry. By using a cork seal the jar can be reused and therefore become more economical for the longer term. The thickness of the vessel provides a good insulation for the liquid contained. Most of this type of container would have contained ginger beer.Within two elliptical circles are painted (in freehand) "S. MASON" in the top half and "WODONGA" in the bottom half. These are separated by an asterisk on both sides. A large "S" overlaid by a similarly large "M" is within the inner circle. Stamped into the jar when still wet during manufacture is "PINNACLE BRAND" in 5mm lettering.drinking container, stone jar, ginger beer container, s. mason, wodonga earthen ware -

Decorative object - Paradise Bird Design Linen Curtains, GP&J Baker, 1920s
William Turner, a Scottish born free-lance designer, who was contracted to GP&J Baker, painted the image on which the design was based in 1918. Turner had trained as a furniture designer before leaving for London in the 1890s, where he rose to prominence as an Arts & Crafts designer. The bird that gives this design its name is adapted from Robert Havell’s ‘A Collection of Birds of Paradise’, published in 1835, and was a favourite of Victorian chintz designers.“Paradise Bird” has been in continuous production since its creation. The hand-block print, of which these curtains are an early example, was supplemented by a version engraved on copper rollers in 1962, and was updated onto screens in 1982. The curtains have significance to the collection because of their intrinsic value and for the link to one of the historic mansions in the City of Boroondara. The curtains by G.P & J Baker of London use one of the exemplary designs in this manufacturer’s output. The first use of the design was in 1918, following the Great War, and the design is said to reflect the hope for peace which was a feature of the postwar years. The curtains are an early example of the Paradise Bird design, and were block printed. A pair of curtains originally situated in one of the front reception rooms of 'Tourmont' in Balwyn Road, Balwyn (now Fintona Girls’ School). The fabric in the curtains was manufactured by the English firm of GP&J Baker. The textile design is variably named as ‘Paradise Bird’ or more recently, ‘Hydrangea Bird’. Turner’s bird perches in a blossoming branch directly above a woodpecker, which is an attribute of Mars, god of war. Thus the design reads as a symbolic statement where War is reversed and Paradise returns (a hopeful message at the end of WWI). “Paradise Bird” has been in continuous production since its creation. . curtains, fabric design, historic buildings -
