Booklet - 20 pages, printed on off white paper, centre stapled within a grey cover slightly larger than the printed document, titled "The Case for Electric Road Passenger Transport". The title is printed on both document covers. The title is contained within a embossed area on the grey cover. The document looks at the case for electric transport in road use, both trolley buses and trams, current developments, including PCC cars, traffic problems, Europe, financial, passengers, reserved track, health and cleanliness. Not date, early 1950's? - has a reference to a 1951 public transport conference on page 5. Pamphlet printed on off white paper with green overprint titled "Pity the poor strap hanger", containing a cartoon set of a man who travels by tram, buys a car, can't park it, traffic congestion and returns to the tram. On the read is note about the call by the City Development Association for a single traffic authority in Melbourne. Has notes about the parking and congestion problems. Has date April 1955 stamped on both copies. Assumed the printing date. Functional object - Ticket punch, Set of 4, c1970
Set of four brass cast, chrome plated, machined, device or ticket punches used to cancel or punch paper tickets when purchased. Placed a hole in the ticket. Spring loaded, consists of two main parts with a pin & spring in addition. . Some of the chrome plating has been worn off. There are no manufacturer markings on the punches. .1 - number P1554 - punches a four pointed hole - would have been used at Preston Depot. .2 - number 1079, punches a hole in the shape of a club as on a card game. .3 - number 1113, punches a four pointed hole. .4 - number 190, punches a heart shaped hole. Shows the open doors with the bars down. Photo of the tram slightly out of focus. Taken early 1950's by an unknown photographer. In the overhead shows a sign black cross in a circular disc and behind the tram a incandescent light suspended in the middle of the overhead. The photo shows the construction of the track at this location, dog spiked sleepers, the rail supports for the inner check rail. Bell used by the conductor or passengers to signal to the driver - stop, proceed or an emergency stop. The actual bell and part of the striker are missing. The striker has been broken off. The "JS" indicates it was made by John Stephenson of New York who made tramway equipment and the first cable tram saloon cars for Melbourne. Demonstrates a conductors communication or signal bell made for use on tramcars.Part of a brass Conductor Communication Bell, or signal bell, consisting of cast frame, part of the bell striker and bell pull part. These tickets comprise 30c City Section (green printing on off-white paper) and 50c (purple printing on off-white paper) tickets with numbers printed in black.
