Functional object - Furphy Water Cart, 1929
The family-owned Furphy company has been manufacturing agricultural equipment in Kyneton and then Shepparton in Victoria from the 1860s to the present day. In the late 1800s the company developed the Furphy Water Cart to help farmers transport water to and from and around their properties - especially in time of drought. At the beginning of World War One, the carts were used to distribute water amongst the thousands of soldiers completing their basic training at Broadmeadows. They were also used for the same purpose in the camps and battlefields overseas. As the soldiers gathered around the water carts they would often chat, share information and gossip amongst themselves. These practices resulted in the term Furphy evolving in to the Australian vernacular as meaning a statement or fact that isn’t quite true or a little bit dubious.Furphy water cart, unpainted with traces of red on embossed endOn side of tank in black paint "CHURCHILL ISLAND" Embossed on end: Furphy water cart; makers Furphy & Sons, Shepparton and other inscriptions.farm machinery, water, furphy cart, horse drawn, furphy, churchill island, shepparton, kyneton -

THERE is a chemist's shop in Hawthorn in the drawingroom over which some of the best, music that has ever been heard under the Southern Cross has been discoursed. Here John Kruse, the famous violinist , has delighted his late father with his violin. Here Nellie Mitchell's (Madame Melba's) voice found appreciative admiration long before she became famous. It is the shop of John Kruse, chemist and druggist, the inventor of fluid magnesia, insecticide and a world of well-known articles of daily consumption. The old mail died some time back, but lived long enough to gratify his chief wish, viz,, to see his famous son, Herr Johann Kruse. John journeyed from Germany to see his dying father. His brief but brilliant sojourn amongst us will be remembered by all lovers of music. TROVE: Colac Herald Friday 1 September 1876, page 4, Article. However, annual dividend has been reduced from 3.5c last year to 2.5c. The group announced yesterday an after-tax profit of $312,000 after sales of $27.09 million, up 26.8 per cent. Directors said the improvement in the profit had come from the return to profitability by the Victorian wholesaling company, and the inclusion of the profit from the T. G. Cullum group for a full 12-month period. They said the company's other subsidiaries had continued to trade profitably. The group had continued to operate profitably despite excessive government price control over drugs in pharmaceutical-benefit scheme. Book, Picador classic, All quiet on the western front, 1929
A full-cast dramatisation of one of the greatest war novels of all time. First published as a novel in 1929, it tells the story of a group of young German soldiers who are enduring, and then coming to terms with, the realities of the First World War. At the age of 19, following the outbreak of the First World War, Paul Bäumer enlists in the German Army. He is deployed to the Western Front, where the experience of life and death in the trenches has an enormous effect on him. He begins to feel disconnected from his past life: his family, his love of poetry, and his feelings. As the war progresses, Paul becomes increasingly lost in battle.p.192.fictionA full-cast dramatisation of one of the greatest war novels of all time. Bottle, Felton Grimwade & Duerdins Ltd, Bottle of Potassium Permanganate, Using the company name, it dates between 1929 and the early 1950s
"Potassium permanganate is an inorganic chemical compound with the chemical formula KMnO4. It is a salt consisting of K+ and MnO−4 ions. Formerly known as permanganate of potash or Condy's crystals, it is a strong oxidizing agent. It dissolves in water to give intensely pink or purple solutions, the evaporation of which leaves prismatic purplish-black glistening crystals. (Which is what in contained in the bottle.) As an oxidant, potassium permanganate can act as an antiseptic. For example, dilute solutions are used to treat canker sores (ulcers), disinfectant for the hands and treatment for mild pompholyx, dermatitis, and fungal infections of the hands or feet. Potassium permanganate is used extensively in the water treatment industry. Historically it was used to disinfect drinking water. (From Wikipedia)" Eight sided, rectangular, clear glass bottle containing grey filings. It is closed with a cork, which is probably broken off. Label indicates Potassium Permanagate manufactured by Felton, Grimwade & Duerdins Ltd. "POTASSI PERMANGANATE."/"POISON"/"Felton Grimwade & Duerdins Ltd." on label on front. There are numbers in the glass on the bottom: "1608 M" and small difficult to read letters. deaf children australia,, chemical, antiseptic, potassium permanganate, water purifier, felton grimwade & duerdins ltd, bottle -
