The 34th Infantry Brigade was raised in Moratai and consisted of three Infantry Battalions. Namely the 65th / 66th /and 67th Battalions. On the 23rd November 1948 they became the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions. The Royal Australian Regiment became the key component of the new Australian Regular Army. Major Douglas Hunter joined 8/13 VMR following National Service training in 1956. He rose through the ranks to become Officer Commanding " A " Squadron 8/13 VMR 1976 - 1980.The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. This plaque was originally mounted on a large board once dispalyed in the Sergeants' Mess at Buna Barracks Albury. The board was too large to be stored or displayed in the museum so the plaque was removed to be used in another location. Ruth Cornell is centre back surrounded by local school friends in 1902 after the presentation of medals in celebration of the birthday of Edward VII. Ruth was the daughter of Frank and Blanche Cornell. Frank Cornell was first listed in Surrey Hills in 1906 at (6) Lorne Parade. In 1908 the listing gives his occupation as a clerk. He was born in 1869 in Richmond, Victoria and died 15 April 1917 in Surrey Hills from a stroke. His wife Blanche Annie Parsons Cornell (nee Bracher) was born in 1869 in Hokitika, New Zealand; she died on 21 January 1940. Children were: Gilbert Frank Cornell (b1894, Hawthorn; d1908, at Frankston beach, an accidental drowning) Ruth Amelia Cornell (b 1899, Kew; d 29 May 1977, Kew) Lorna Amy Cornell (b 1906, Surrey Hills; d unknown) Patience Blanche Cornell (b1907, Surrey Hills; d unknown). Ruth Amelia married David Ellis, c1922 in Surrey Hills. David was a dentist who practised in Surrey Hills for many years. Patience (Pat) Blanche married Norman Henry Brewer (1893–1975) in 1931 in Surrey Hills. Dr David Ellis' surgery was in Whitehorse Road in 1930s and later at the corner of Windsor Crescent and Union Road. The donor was Ruth's sister. Maryanne COUTTS (1960- ) Born Australia Maryanne Coutts studied at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), The University of Melbourne, 1979 -1981, the University of NSW (UNSW),1984 and achieved a PhD at Federation University Australia in 1999. She has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and internationally including UK, Spain and Thailand and is currently Head of Drawing at the National Art School, Sydney. The Civil Air Patrol is the official USAF auxiliary. Formed during WW 2, it is currently tasked with search and rescue, communications, civil defense and aerospace education (via the CAP Cadet program) The Civil Air Patrol, while formed in WW2, became the auxiliary of the USAF when the air force was formed as a separate service in 1947. The uniform is based on the USAF uniform with distinguishing CAP insignia and badges. It is unusual to find CAP items in collections.Blue-grey wool serge USAF peaked hat with black patent leather peak (with light grey underside). Black leather chin strap secured by two 16 mm diameter metal buttons embossed with the USAF insignia. Dark blue hat band. Mid grey head band and light tan lining. Maunufacturer's label stapled and sewn to head band. Metal tab support for front of crown and metal strip reinforcement to edge of crown. As an historic army uniform with an association to Victoria this item is of local historic and social significance. It is also in very good condition. Woolen khaki peaked hat has a central head band with solid peak connected to the lower front of the head band. The top is high at the front and protrudes out from the headband about 3cm on all sides. There is a brown leather chinstrap on the lower front of the headband above the peak and this has a slide extension that can be enlarged to go under the neck to keep the hat in position in high winds. The chin strap in connected to the headband with two plastic button that have queens crown above a map of Australia. Affixed to the front of the headband above the peak is the Artillery Corps metal hat badge in gold colouring. The interior of the top of the hat has a cotton lining under the woollen exterior and then a plastic protective lining to avoid sweat bleeding onto the exterior. A cloth badge with the makers name sewn to the cloth lining and covered by the plastic protective layer. uniform
