After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. The series of drawings in the Picken Collection are invaluable assets for identifying architectural features and styles. The book was regarded as a good handbook guide to diseases of apples and pears.The orchardists of Harcourt, sole traders and hardy pioneers, took more notice of the spray retailers than they did of the Dept of Agriculture, with field days and film nights organized by the Shell Oil Co being a primary source of knowledge about the prevention of orchard pests and diseases. This book was awarded to Mary Lawrence in 1899 for first prize in Geography. Mary Lawrence enrolled at Clarendon Ladies' College at the age of 14. Siblings enrolled: Janie Elizabeth Lawrence (1893), Jessie McBain Lawrence (1895), Christina Lawrence (1896) and Margaret Adair Lawrence (1900). Mary's father in the original register is listed as Alexander and their residence as Canally Balranald, "Colibau Estate" Redesdale in NSW. Father's occupation is noted as Squatter.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. This fold out series of black and white images shows scenes of Bacchus Marsh in the late 1930s or during the 1940s. The date of the set of images is not stated but it shows the Bacchus Marsh Swimming Pool constructed in 1938. The general purpose of the images to promote tourism suggests the collection may date from the post war period of the late 1940s or early 1950s when petrol rationing and other wartime restrictions were being discontinued. In the late 19th and early-20th centuries household heaters burned wood and coal for heating. In winter the warm air from the fireplace would flow into the room through a round flue in the face of the chimney. In the warmer months the unnecessary heater and flue was removed and the chimney cleaned. Homemakers then covered the circular flue hole with a decorative and usually inexpensive wall hanging to prevent draughts and dust. The practice was especially popular in France and Germany where a lot of the artwork originated. The covers were no longer needed after households changed over to more modern designs of heaters. The flue covers were known as Wall Art or Flue Cover Art. They were usually round and illustrated with a lithograph or chromograph print. The picture was then mounted on card, covered with glass, and framed with a brass or tin rim. The border was commonly gilt with a black stripe around the centre. There were numerous illustrations, many with a European appearance, and were easily bought through local merchants for a small price.This pretty flue cover is significant for representing a common domestic wall decoration from the late Victorian to the Edwardian eras, when solid fuel heaters were used in low to high income homes. The picture is similar to many other flue cover images, apart from the holly clutched in the girl’s hand, which gives the cover a Christmas theme. This flue cover is the only one in our collection and appears to have a unique design; the hand painted floral decoration on the glass and the two crimson rings around the edges of the frame’s white border haven’t been seen on other flue covers. The round metal frame forms a deep, white-painted, crimson-edged border for the illustration. The hand-painted blue flowers on the glass front form add to the border and give a 3-dimensional effect. The picture is between the cardboard backing and the glass front, with the metal frame holding them together. This book was a highly regarded reference book for students in primary and lower secondary schools within Victoria from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s. The book provided students with the fundamental knowledge of botany for the era in which it was produced. As this book was targeting a junior schooling level (basic), it could cover a greater and extended reader population. Teaching institutions could, because of its straight forward, basic written information, retain this book's circulation for a greater length of time, thereby optimising the return against the greater initial costs of importing it from England.This book was produced in a time where learning was at a relatively slower pace (due to a smaller source and supply of material). The availability of a large range of cheap reference books such as that offered from 1971 on wards via the internet "Project Guttenberg" in the form of electronic books, has dramatically provided a larger source of reference material. The significance of this book on botany, is that it was highly effective for the era in which it was produced and in particular the students at a rural based school. Being in a rural area students were able to identify local vegetation to the various life cycles of plants presented in this mainly United Kingdom/European referenced book. The students in the Kiewa Valley and attending a rural school, where in a position to study all the fundamental teaching that this book encompassed. This in one way provided students in the valley a slightly better appreciation between book and real life (on the land, in the field and by the river). Later publications of this book had additional Australian references in them.This hard covered book(cloth strengthened) is faded(aged) beige in colour and consists of 204 pages. It is printed in English (black print) on both sides and contains illustrations of both free hand sketches and photographs of plants, both foliage and roots systems. The book is arranged in three sections: three pages of preface, two of contents (28 chapters). The last four pages contain the appendix and index.On spine "BOTANY" underneath "R.H.
