Rodwell was a wholesale and retail butcher in Nicholson Street (the main street), Orbost in the early 20th century.This document is a record of an early business in Orbost and reflects a time when accounts were hand-written. This is a medium size poster. It is drawn in black ink. It shows an image of HMAS SYDNEY, SS BURESK (Collier) and SMS EMDEN. It shows the tracks the two ships took through the battle. It shows dotting lines throughout the drawing - possibly indicating when shots were exchanged. It shows a list in the centre, showing basic specs of the two warships and their battle casualties. This is a needle book containing needles. It appears that the Army and Navy Needle books were not issued to soldiers or sailors but were made for home use in the Western World - Europe, America and presumably Australia. They were made mainly in Germany and some were made in Japan but were not sold in wartime. They were sold before and after World War Two and often featured images of well-known ships of the day. This folder has images of the Europa and the Bremen, two ships made in Germany which belonged to the Norddeutscher Lloyd Line (N.D.L.) and which were launched in the late 1920s. They were the two most advanced high speed steam turbine ocean liners of their day. The Bremen was gutted by fire in 1941. The Europa was captured by the Allies in 1945 and used as a troopship, then it went to France where it was became an ocean liner named Liberte. It was scrapped in 1963. The newspaper cutting tells of a presentation by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill to Private Les Lawlor on his embarking for overseas service. It is not known to which war the cutting refers and no reference can be found to Private Les Lawlor. No connection between the two items (needle book and cutting) has been established but they have always been together in our collection. The needle book is of social significance but has no known local provenance. The cutting contains information suitable for our files.1 This is a piece of thickened paper folded in two to make a folder containing four packets of needles. The folder is green with two images of ships on the back and the front. The images are multi-coloured and have an ornamental edging. The needles of different sizes are contained in black paper folded four times to enclose the needles (13 still in the folded paper – all rusty). It appears one needle packet may be missing. .2 This is a cutting from a newspaper regarding a soldier leaving for overseas military service. This book was given in 1929 to Alma McCullagh by the Dennington Sabbath (Sunday) School with the teacher being R. Conn. The Dennington Presbyterian Church was originally established in Drummond Street in 1918. In 1951 it was moved to Lindsay Street and demolished in 1968. R. Conn may be Ruby Conn who was born in Warrnambool in 1890 to Joseph and Ann Conn. Joseph Conn was a blacksmith from Illowa in the late 19th century (today in that area we have Conn’s Corner and Conn’s Lane). The McCullagh family had a property in Yangery named Oak Grove.This book is of interest because of the 1920s connection to the Dennington Presbyterian Church, the Conn family and the McCullagh families.This is a hard cover book of 256 pages. The cover is green with red and black lettering and an image of two men and two women inside a building. The cover is torn away on the back right hand corner. There are five full page black and white illustrations scattered throughout the text. The inscriptions are handwritten in black ink. Situated on the Yarra River, 5.5 kms south of Christmas Hills on private property. This timber trestle bridge is said to have been built some time after 1907 by Melbourne master-builder, David Mitchell (the father of Dame Nellie Melba), to connect his two "Henley Farm" properties with Lilydale. In earlier days, when the McPhersons owned the property, their children used a punt to cross the river to attend Yering Primary School. Carl Hermann Nier in 1877 a silverware maker started to produce miners lamps and household lanterns in Beierfeld, Saxonia, East Germany. In January 1902 he established the Nier-Feuerh and company in his home town to produce kerosene lanterns. Carl's three sons Bruno, Curt and Woldemar Nier made the company into the largest lantern producer in the 1930s with Bruno Nier holding many patents for lamps. Lantern production was interrupted by World War II and ceased at the end of 1944 because of the shortage of materials and the advancing Russian army. After the Second World War the company restart the lantern production in 1947 at Luedenscheid and Hohenlockstedt north of Hamburg and fully re-establishing the company in 1950. A domestic item with an interesting history that now is sought after by collectors giving an insight into how hurricane kerosene lamps came into being from a manufacturer in Germany that held numerous patents for oil lamps from 1902 until 1940.Kerosene Lamp with handle, blue in colour, badly rusted. This photograph shows one of the many weddings held at the Mission to Seafarers over the years and provides an overview of wedding fashion of the late 1920s. The Bride is posing in the courtyard of the Mission to Seamen. The bridesmaids were Ella Kendall and Molly Walker. The Walkers and Dora had a long association with the Mission and the LHLG and in the 1960s becoming president of the Flying Angel League which amalgamated with the LHLG in the early 1960s. In 1970 Dora received an OBE. Private images of the day for the record were supplied to the Mission by sons David and Brian in 2018. The article in the Herald of the day describes the event: "WEDDING AT SEAMEN'S CHAPEL Reception at Hotel Windsor The pretty little chapel at the Sea men's Institute was packed with interested friends this afternoon, when Miss Dora Walker, one of the Mission's most enthusiastic and efficient voluntary helpers, chose it as the setting for her marriage with Mr H. P. Simpson, son of Mr and Mrs J. H. Simpson, of Mornington. A group of her fellow workers decorated the chapel with lovely pink and white gladioli, carnations and roses. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. R. Weller, chaplain of the Mission, and the bride was given away by her father, Mr A. W. Walker, of Manning road, East Malvern. She wore a lovely ivory georgette frock, the finely tucked skirt being fashioned with a deep transparent hem of Chantilly lace. Over it fell a beautiful Honiton lace veil mounted on tulle and arranged to give the ef fect of a train. Fragrant white roses composed her bouquet. Two attendants followed her down the aisle — her sister, Miss Molly Walker, and Miss Ella Kendall — both wearing dainty shrimp pink georgette frocks and large crinoline straw hats in the same shade with a dainty edging of tulle. They carried bouquets of pink cactus dahlias nnd delphiniums. Mr Louis Buscombe was best man, and Mr George Thompson grooms man. HMAS AustraliaHMAS Australia has been a significant link with and factor in the history of the Mission and staff. Padre Frank Oliver Chaplain from 1930-60 served on the ship in WW2. Cadets and officers also regularly visited the Mission. The ship was originally requisitioned by the RAN as a collier and supply ship. It was decommissioned from RAN service in 1915 which may have required a caretaker. This image is one of several attached to loose album pages which include some images with miscellaneous undated and handwritten inscriptions. This ship served in WW1. The SS Maloja was a passenger liner operated by The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation between 1923 and 1954. The ship was requisitioned by the Admiralty for service as an Armed Merchant Cruiser upon her arrival at AdenB & W landscape photograph with view from the dock of nearside port bow and superstructure of a moored ship.
