Book, Peter Barton, Beneath Flanders fields the tunnellers' war, 1914-1918, 2005
In the Ypres Salient, the secret struggle beneath no man's land became one of engineering, technology and science - and of carefully calculated assassination. This book reveals how this most intense of battles was fought and won. Few on the surface knew the horrific details of the tunnellers work, yet this silent, claustrophobic conflict was a barbaric struggle that raged day and night for almost two and a half years. On 7 June 1917 the most dramatic mine offensive in history at Messines Ridge opened. After Messines, the tunnellers turned to the construction of deep dugouts, structures which housed tens of thousands of troops, men for whom life on the surface had become almost untenable. Often electrically lit and ventilated, they incorporated headquarters, cookhouses, soup kitchens, hospitals, drying rooms and workshops. Hundreds were built, and thanks to the Flanders geology many still survive today, and are can be seen in photographs in this book.Index, ill, maps, p.305.non-fictionIn the Ypres Salient, the secret struggle beneath no man's land became one of engineering, technology and science - and of carefully calculated assassination. Memory Lane by Joyce Lane
Joyce Lane was born in Gippsland in 1922 and moved with her family to Bacchus Marsh when she was two years old. She remained in Bacchus Marsh for the rest of her life until her death in 2001. During her life she had written down many of her memories about Bacchus Marsh, particularly her early years from the 1920s through to the 1940s. During the 1980s some of these recollections were published in the local Bacchus Marsh newspapers. Towards the end of her life her writings were collated into three large volumes comprising over 500 pages. Photocopies of these were made by Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society and added to its collection. The volumes of writings are known as 'Memory Lane'. Joyce Lane is one of the subjects featured in the book 'Bacchus Marsh by Bacchus Marsh: An Anecdotal History', compiled by Geoff Camm, published in 1986. See Chapter 42, pages 333-352.A significant archive of personal recollections and observations by a single individual about a community.Memories of Bacchus Marsh. Manuscript.
