Isaac Jeeves special strip of land Crown Allotment “C” 7 chains wide, lay between the sledge load of pea stalks and the far end of the verandah on Mrs Hand’s “Beulah Tea Rooms” which soon afterwards became the Mt Dandenong North Post Office. The coach road came up from the right behind the tall stump. The big woman in black was Mrs Hand. The wagon at the shop was Dodd’s grocery cart. The nearer wagon was the first coach on the mountain which had belonged to Briarty. The small cart was Dodd’s meat cutting cart. The elm trees are in the centre of the picture and above them is Price’s sign advertising their shop and newsagency. The big house is “Mountjoy” burnt 1975. Walker’s house is among the big trees left centre. Boy at horse’s head is Fred Jeeves. Boy on sledge is Theo Hand. The horse is “Blossom”. There is a pale van parked (or driving past) a dairy on the corner of Bayview Rd and Belgrave-Gembrook Road. A brick toilet block is shown with a sign saying 'MEN' on a nearby lamp post. -

B&W photo of a scene in Belgrave, taken Easter 1922 presumably by Miss Field. The view is of Beauty Bend on the Monbulk Road where it crosses a small gully. Two men and a woman are standing on the near side of the fenced-off gully, another group people, perhaps two men and four women and girls, are sitting and standing on the far side of the gully, and a further two people are at the right of the photo. There are trees and tree ferns in the background and two signs are visible, attached to trees and possibly pertaining to a guesthouse further up the hill and accessible by a path which is just visible. On the back of the photo 'Belgrave Easter 1922' is written in pen. -

Letter dated 10 December 1942 to the President of the Legacy Club with the Hostel Committee's recommendation to purchase 1267 Burke Road as a hostel. He advises that there was only one dissenting committee member (Legatee Carleton) who felt that the property was too far from the city for convenience. The price of £5,500 is considered to be favourable following a formal valuation of £6,633, and he estimates that the property would accommodate at least 23 children plus staff with only minor alteration.Records the Hostel Committee's official decision and submits it to the then President of the Legacy Club, Legatee H.M. Architects Carleton & Carleton applied to the City of Kew for any objections to the Melbourne Legacy Club establishing a Hostel for children of deceased Service men on Burke Road, yellow copy of the letter is dated 16 Dec 1942 and signed C.R.Carleton (also a legatee). The reply from the City of Kew is that there were no objections and was dated 19th December 1942. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. The property mentioned at 1267 Burke Road was named Holmbush and was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943.
