Book, Glimpses of Colonel Tom
This is a supplement to Winty Calder's earlier work 'Heroes and Gentlemen'. Thomas Caradoc Rose Price CB, often known as Colonel Tom Price, was an Australian soldier, and acting commandant of the Commonwealth Military Forces in Victoria in 1902. Joining the British Indian Army in his early years, he served 20 years in India before returning to Australia. In 1885, he raised the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and was instrumental in establishing the concept of light horse units within the Australian Army. In 1900, he led a Victorian contingent during the Second Boer War, and was the only Australian officer during that war to command a force of British regulars. He remained in the Australian military after the war, serving in Queensland until 1904 when he was medically discharged. He retired to Victoria again and died in 1911 at the age of 68.Soft cover book with adhesive binding on spine, A4 size, 56 pages being a collection of addresses and letters of Colonel Tom Price, compiled by Winty Calder, published by Jimaringle Publications 1985. A large lot of papers, including this and many other telegrams, were apparently found in the ceiling cavity of the Sandy Creek/Tarnagulla Post and Telegraph Office in the later 20th Century, during building works. Donald Clark Collection. Telegram sent from Tarnagulla Telegraph Office from Charles L. Layton to The Inspector General, Public Works, Melbourne. Text reads 'Letters by tonight's post to be addressed to Company's Hotel, Tarnagulla. I leave tomorrow at 11am for Maldon'. -

Quinn CollectionTwo and a half page letter written on one and a half sheets of unlined white paper (0805a1-2), headed MS Fenris, At Sea and dated 28.02.49. The envelope (0805b) is cream-coloured. A second envelope (0805c) is duck-egg blue with a green lining and a 5cm border of repeating diagonal stripes of green, white, yellow and white.Envelope 0805b bears four 'Espana' stamps and is addressed to Mrs H Hayes, 14 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, Victoria. The postmark is indistinct. There is a penciled addition on the back. Envelope 0805c bears one Brasil stamp and is addressed to Mrs S Quinn, 5 Pollington Street, St Kilda. Letter, Australian Mortgage Land and Finance to Augustus Bostock, 1900
Augustus Bostock was the 9th child of Robert & Rachael Bostock of Vaucluse Epping Forest, Van Diemen’s Land. He was only 4 years old when his mother died. He was inspired by his father to seek his fortune in the Western District of Victoria. He arrived around 1850. He married Margaret Aitkin in July 1865. Augustus owned several properties in the district and leased others. He sat on the court of Warrnambool, Mortlake or Hexham as required. He resided at Marramook in Hawkesdale and later moved to Vaucluse in Hopetoun Road Warrnambool, where he died in 1920 at the age of 87. He was involved in many aspects of life in the Western District, racing, cricket, and social activities to name a few. This letter is written in reply to an earlier one by Augustus making himself available to do wool and sheep classing. This states of the availability of work at Delatite Station the property of Mr. Henry Ricketson one of many properties he owned.This letter follows from previous ones showing Augustus Bostock in his quest for work. Cream lined paper with Australian Mortgage Land and Finance letterhead printed at top of letter. The letter is handwritten in black ink with adjustments written in same hand as the signer of the letter. N.J. Caire had a great love for the area in and surrounding Marysville and in the late 1800's took many photographs of Marysville and its surrounds. N.J. Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 N.J. Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria. The photograph is pre 1914-18. It is showing Cheltenham Market Gardeners having a picnic. The Market Gardeners gave Moorabbin it's first industry, which was to prove the most durable and resilient. The ladies and gentlemen are dressed in very fine clothes. All of the men are wearing suits with waistcoats and white shirts with neck ties. One man has a Boater hat , 4 have Bowler hats and 5 have Stetson hats. 5 men are standing and 4 men are kneeling or sitting with the ladies. The ladies are seated on the ground around a table runner on which items of food are seen. Most of the ladies are wearing white dresses, one lady has a dark coloured skirt with a white frilly blouse, and all have large wide brimmed fashionably decorated hats . They all seem to be dressed in their best clothes.The photograph depicts a group of men and women, 16 altogether, having a picnic pre World War 1 1914-1918 .
