Murray Comrie Collection. John Pierce's Southern Cross General Store, a wholesale grocer and spirit merchant was put up for sale after Pierce's death in 1871. It was later incorporated into the Flour Mill complex. De Gruchy & Leigh was a publishing and printing firm operating in Melbourne and regional Victoria from the late 1850s until the mid 1860s. The company published almanacs and guidebooks as well as prints (portraits, views and genre scenes), maps and architectural plans (Source: National Portrait Gallery, Canberra). This is a copy created from another item in the collection - a printed piece of paper which was either a packing label or receipt form used at the company or a brand label for bottles, perhaps for wine made by the proprietor. Murray Comrie Collection. Information collated by Murray Comrie: This photograph shows the Treloar Foundry with its chimney, employees and the Treloar home in Commercial Road Tarnagulla H.W. (Henry) Treloar was a native of Redruth in Cornwall, where he was born in 1811. He worked as a blacksmith in his father's Cornwall foundry and then in 1840 went to work in Cuba as a foreman smith to the Royal Santiago Copper Mining Co. Returning to England in 1851 he remained for two years just as the reports of rich Victorian goldfields began to be heard there. He brought his family to Australia in September 1853, arriving in Geelong and then working in Heidelberg for eighteen months. He returned to Geelong to set up a business but after three months was drawn to the Maryborough goldfields, then Dunolly and then Sandy Creek (as Tarnagulla was then known), arriving in March 1855. He remained in Tarnagulla until his death. He established the Foundry in Tarnagulla in 1855 and was known as the best 'mining' smith in the district. After the decline of mining he turned to production of agricultural implements and the firm built a reputation in the field, through devices such as the 'NONPARIEL' tree and stump extractor, double furrow ploughs, seed harrows and scarifiers. On 26th October 1878 the firm won three first prizes for their implements at the North Western Agricultural Show at Ingelwood. This photograph shows the Treloar Foundry employees (possibly Henry Treloar with hand resting on the stump extractor) conducting a demonstration of their tree and stump extracting device on a farm in Inglewood while a large crowd watches. Information collated by Murray Comrie: This building was demolished in the 1970s. The first use of the site was as the George Hotel licensed to an A.B. Clay in 1858, then Waller and Robinson. Charles Waller operated his Excelsior Line of coaches from the George Hotel stables. John Ousley took over the stables for use as a blacksmith's shop. He sold out to Stafford & Sons in 1908. Staffords found the existing premises at the George Hotel too small and built this building. Frank McNamee later took over the premises and operated it for many years. Murray Comrie Collection. Information collated by Murray Comrie: William Herd was born in Scotland in 1829, and came to Australia in 1852. He set up a business at Hard Hills and then and the lower end of the main lead at Sandy Creek (Tarnagulla). He then purchased a business from a Mr. Turnbull in Commercial Road where he built this large store. He was a member of the first Borough Council in 1864 and Mayor on several occasions. Herd died in 1899, aged 70 and his son carried on the business for several years. This building was later moved to Metelman's farm in Arnold West to be used as barn (and was as late as May 1970), as shown in THA-2019.0055. Murray Comrie Collection. Information written by Murray Comrie: A meeting was called at the Golden Age Hotel on 11th June 1868 when it was resolved to build a flour mill. Tenders were called by H.C. Bristol, in the Tarnagulla Courier of January 10, 1874, for the erection of the mill. Building of the Mill commenced in 1874. Pipes were laid to Company's Dam to obtain water for the Mill's boilers. Steam was got up for the first time on 30th March, 1882. A boiler burst about April 29th. Two men (J.H. Smith and W. Hargreaves) died as a result and two others were seriously injured. The mill commenced operations on 13th June 1882 with Mr. W. Fitzgerald as manager. Thomas Comrie was the proprietor and was responsible for the Mill being built. The Mill operated with grinding stones until 1899 when new rollers and a considerable amount of new equipment was installed, including a new, more powerful engine to drive the Mill. In January 1901, 6,000 bags of wheat were received weekly and it was a common sight to see the streets lined with wagons. In 1913, 15,000 bags of wheat were bought at three shillings and four pence per bushell. In January 1914, wheat came in at the rate of 1500 bags a day with 20,000 bags in storage. Thomas Comrie died on 4th August 1910. The Mill was carried on by his executors, then closed for a short period prior to being sold in September 1918 to a Mr. O. Albert of Talbot. Albert operated the Mill for a few years but during the 1920s it was closed down and then pulled down. It was later re-erected at Mildura where it operated for many years. In 1960 and 1961, the International House Students Club organised a float for the Dandenong "Pageant for Progress", to garner support for the Building Fund to contribute to development of a new wing. The Women's Auxiliaries assisted in preparing the float, which also participated in Melbourne's Moomba festival. The Sunbury Cycling Club was formed in September 1897 although prior to that date cycling was popular in the district. A popular place to cycle in those times was at Diggers Rest. In 1897 the Sunbury Cycle Club organised a race around the township. After that local bike races were organised on a weekly basis.
