Frederick August Schleibs a 44 year old farmer of Wodonga enlisted in AIF 30 March 1916 and was allocated to 2nd Pioneer Battalion with regimental number 2972. En route to England he was hospitalised at Cape Town with injured knee. He was returned to Australia and discharged 27 October 1916. He reenlisted 21 February 1917 and sailed with 28th Reinforcements 8th Light Horse to Egypt. He returned to Australia following the war. Unusual to see a foreign coin used as an identity disc.Soldiers identify disc set connected by string; one aluminium and one a Portuguese 20 Reis coin. Both are stamped with information relating to 3383 Frederick Augustus Schleibs who served with 8th Australian Light Horse in World War One.On aluminium disc "A F Schleibs / 3383 / 8LH / CE", and on reverse "Wife / Wadonga / Vic / Aust". This gas mask dates to 1942 in the Second World War. This mask is representative of a style of gas mask that was widely distributed during the Second World War, and can be found in other Australian collections. Rubberised face mask with two circular plastic windows with metal rim for sight by wearer. The mask is fitted by six black elastic straps with red and yellow stripes, which are attached via metal buckles at six points at the top, middle and bottom of the face. Straps converge on rubber backed fabric cross-shaped component which is stamped. Over mouth area is a filter comprised of several layers of metal sheeting with holes. At chin, a metal fitting fits into a black rubber concertina tube which fits into the top of a rounded rectangular container with ribbed edges. These heads and tails dice were used by the troops to gamble in World War 1 and World War 11 and were the pre-cursur to the two-up game which was a popular form of gambling in Australia post World War 11. Later versions of two-up were played with two pennies on a board. A hand made cardboard box containing 18 cubed shaped dice of various colours and sizes. James Leonard Foley’s family lived at ‘Warringal’, 3 Foley Street, Kew. Like many other soldiers from Kew, he was educated at the Kew State School. He enlisted at the age of 19 in March 1915. His previous occupation is recorded as 'Blacksmith'. James sent a postcard to his mother in 1915 saying that he was ‘quite well’. He was to be killed in action on the Western Front on 24 August 1916 and is buried in the Villers-Bretonneux cemetery. Embroidered cards such as this one were made by the French (usually women) for use as post cards for World War One soldiers to send home as greeting cards. The gift card with the embroidered card may not have been originally with it. The embroidered card has the date of October 1918, just one month before the official end of the war in November 1918. The name of the person who wrote ‘Somewhere in France’ on the back of the card is not listed but the handwriting appears to be similar to that on another card in our collection which is from R. Kerr from Kerr Street in Warrnambool. No information has been found on this soldier named Kerr. This embroidered card is of considerable significance as a very attractive memento of World War One and one, presumably, with local provenance. .1 The embroidered card is a World War One post card. The embroidery is on silk mounted on a white card. The embroidery is in yellow, blue, red, white and green colours and features a trail of flowers, a rising sun, six national flags, the words ‘Happy Christmas’ and other ornamentation. The embroidery is in two sections with a lift up section that could hold another card or note. The handwriting on the back has been written in pencil. The post card section has not been franked or posted. The card has marks at the edges where it has been attached to a surface with pins. Pte Charles F. Richardson 6 Bn AIF was wounded at Gallipoli, and sent to Alexandria where he died in a hospital of his wounds. The certificates were held by the Rogers family. Pte Richardson's sister was the historian Dorothy Rogers.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.Three mounted letters, two identical paying tribute to the sacrifice of Pte Charles F.
