This family portrait was taken at Lithgow prior to going to Sydney to visit HMAS Sydney during an 'open day' prior to her sailing off to war. During the vist to Garden Island, I managed somehow to become disengaged from my mother and father each thinking the other had me with them. When they finally met up and no Denis in sight, panic became the order of the day. I was finally found below deck where some of the sailors had taken me and were giving me a grand time. They informed my mum and dad that had I not been found they were going to make me the Sydney's mascot. To this day when I recall this story l think of all those fine young sailors who lost their lives when Sydney was sunk by the German raider off the coast of Western Australia.photograph, hmas sydney, gibbons collection catalogue, denis gibbons, photographer, vietnam war -

Badge - 1936 Coronation Fair Christ Church, 1936
A keepsake badge which relates to the tumultuous period of the English royal family with the death of George V when his son Edward V111 abdicated from the throne due to his involvement with divorcee Wallis Simpson. His brother Albert was crowned as King George VI on May 12 1937. This badge is of interest as the dates are a mere two weeks before the abdication. The Christ Church fetes and flower shows have been a part of Christ Church social and fundraising agenda since the 1890’s, with the ladies’ guild playing a large part in their organization and operation. This object has significance as it commemorates a long running and popular event on the social and religious calendar for the parishioners and people of Warrnambool. It also is linked to an event of world- wide interest.Small white badge with red writing and symbol of crown in the centre. Foam rubber (also known as cellular, sponge, or expanded rubber) refers to rubber that has been manufactured with a foaming agent to create an air-filled matrix structure. Foam rubber was first produced in 1929 by Dunlop researcher chemist Eric Owen using whipped latex. In 1937 isocyanate based materials were first used for the formation of foam rubbers, after World War II styrene-butadiene rubber replaced many natural types of foam. Foam rubbers have been used commercially for a wide range of applications since around the 1940s. The Ford Model C Ten is a car that was built by Ford UK between 1934 and 1937. The Model C was released in Australia in 1935 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Model_C_Ten This glass plate negative was used to manufacture postcards (1:1 printing) for commercial sale by the Rose Sterograph Company and its subsidiaries. George Rose founded the Rose Stereograph Company in 1880 and was joined by Herbert (Bert) Cutts in the early 20th Century. The pair formed a lifetime working partnership and strong personal friendship. Assisted by George’s two sons, Herbert George and Walter, and later by Neil Cutts, the Rose Stereograph Company continued its operations for more than 140 years. The company was initially built on stereographs, but as cinema took over and stereographs fell out of fashion, the Rose Stereograph Company developed Australia’s first commercially viable photographic postcard business. Specialising in postcards of iconic historical moments and significant landmarks, The Rose Stereograph Company became a staple of the Australian travel industry. This remarkable collection of glass plate negatives, transparencies, and postcards – arguably Australia’s most significant photography collection outside of public hands – has been passed down through the generations, surviving war, relocation, and the harsh Victorian climate. The historic Rose Stereograph collection is the culmination of George Rose’s dream of capturing and preserving precious moments in time and remains the legacy of the Rose and Cutts families. It is with great sadness that the Cutts family says goodbye to a collection that spans five generations and 140 years. The Cutts family understands that for these historically important pieces to rest with one family is to deny others the pleasure of their custodianship.Glass Plate Negative Size: 9 x 13.9 cmThe Bridge, Eltham, Valentine Series No. 3196, Copyrightpeter and elizabeth pidgeon collection, bridge, cars, diamond creek (creek), eltham, eltham south, ford model c ten, glass plate negative, main road, main road bridge, motor vehicles, postcard, rose stereograph, rose stereograph company, valentine series postcard -
