Main Stream Melbourne - The River Yarra on film (Screen Sound Australia, 2004) and The Prize (Eltham Films, Tim Burstall ,1960) Combining footage from more than 90 early newsreels, documentaries and short films which additionally features almost 200 photographs and illustrations - shows locals fishing and swimming in the river, holding canoe races and lazing at boathouses. Also included is Tim Burstall's 1960 short film, The Prize, which tells the story of a boy, played by his then six-year-old son Tom, and his adventures with a kid goat. The film, shot on the Yarra, won a bronze award at the 1960 Venice Film Festival. When this photograph was taken late yesterday afternoon the couple were still inside the house, and through a ventilator they had stuck a red flag which they waved from time to time. This hotel was located in Chute Street Diamond Creek. The site was from the C.F.A. station east to the corner. In 1925 this hotel was burnt down at 11.00 am on a week day and the street was closed by police because the lighting system used petrol gas and an explosion was feared. Fortunately there was no explosion. This photo shows the gutted structure after the fire. It was prepared to help celebrate the 140th year of the school's existence on its original land grant of 1856, which appeared on the first surveyed land for the formation of the Town of Eltham, in the Parish of Nillumbik, County of Evelyn, granted by the then Government of New South Wales. It is inscribed in Harry Gilham's writing on page 1 - "For Eltham P.S Chronology 209 - 150th Anniv. book; Harry Gilham Collection; Unpublished" and stamped "Eltham District Historical Society" Pages 3 and 4 missing. The Eltham Library was located at the southern end of the newly constructed southern wing of the Shire Offices at 895 Main Road. The first dedicated library in the shire was the Children's Library built by the Eltham War Memorial Trust (now the Eltham War Memorial Hall). Funds were raised by volunteers to purchase books, the land and construct the building. This library initially opened in the Eltham Public Hall on the corner of Main Road and Arthur Street around 1948. The Children’s Library building was opened in 1961 but the transfer to the Eltham Council of the War Memorial Trust land and buildings in 1965 saw the closure of the children's library, which held over 2,000 books that were then transferred to all the schools in the shire which had participated in the monthly book exchange of boxes of books by use of the railways, bus companies and private cars. In late 1966 the children’s library service was integrated into the Heideberg Regional Library Service and the building was officially renamed the Eltham War Memorial Hall. The Brinkkotter house in Dudley Street became the first of the general library services in Eltham with shelving from the old Heidelberg City Library, staff borrowed form the Heidelberg Library and some use of the 1941 Shire Office in Main Road. By 1971 the 1964 Shire Office had the southern extension added and the Library was located on the lower level with Engineering and Planning on the level above. By 1986 this library was experiencing overcrowding from lack of space and equipment needs. With Federal Government assistance, Council was able to design and build a new library which was located in the Eltham Common and opened in May 1994.Background workings for the funding of a Public Hall at Eltham. The funding was provided by public subscription and the money loaned to Council to build the hall. The hall was part of the new Eltham Shire offices located at the corner of Main Road and Arthur Street. Notes concerning impact upon Eltham War Memorial Garden of a proposed roundabout at Dudley Street, Eltham, September 1996 - In 1996 Nillumbik Shire Council proposed the provision of traffic lights or a roundabout to alleviate traffic concerns at the intersection of Main Road with Dudley street and Panther Place. The Society had no real concerns with Panther Place as it had no perceived impact upon Shillinglaw Cottage however survey pegs for a new road alignment to provide for a roundabout at Dudley Street were placed within the Eltham War Memorial Gardens which was significant concern. Harry Gilham, then President of the Society was on the working group with Council and the RSL to discuss this proposal. Ultimately it did not proceed and traffic lights were installed. No action occurred at Panther Place. 2. Notes pertaining to Eltham Town Focus Group and the Eltham War Memorial Trust property, c.January 1997 - These notes from Harry Gilham relate to a draft report "A Community Vision for 'The Eltham War Memorial Trust' Property Main Road, Eltham" being prepared at the request of Chief Commissioner Don Cordell, Nillumbik Shire Council, 31st January 1997. Harry handed over these notes to Jim Connor on 14 March 2010. Jim had replaced Harry as President of the Eltham District Historical Society in 2009. They also reference Stanley S. Immediately behind on the same track at the platform is a Diesel Electric Rail Motor (DERM) and C-class bogey (luggage) then a small (articulated) rail car (articulated) then a cattle van. On the adjacent track is State Car No. 2 (Melville) and a C-van. State Car No. 2 (Melville) was used a power generation car for special trains and the Train of Knowledge. State Car No. 5 is in the design of the Spirit of Progress. George Coop advised that the occasion is the visit of the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe to Echuca in 1963. George Coop advised that the occasion is the visit of the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe to Echuca in 1963. The ‘platform’ was a special creation for such purposes, located on the wharf spur line that ran behind the Echuca Civic Centre. The large notice board commemorates the Queen’s visit on March 5th, 1954 for which the platform was initially built. From time to time it would get spruced up with pot plants, fresh paint and repaired hand rails for formal functions.
