Following the complete closure of the St Kilda - Brighton Electric street railway (tramway) in 1959, the Brighton St Kilda Bus lines operated a service under a contract with the Victorian Railways with a joint ticketting arrangement. These tickets are weekly tickets for various locations along the former tramway. Those tickets available for Melbourne have the conditions of travel on the rear. The two vertical stripes indicated that the ticket was available to pass through the gates at Flinders St or Spencer St, while the large cross indicated to a ticket checker that the ticket was not available beyond St Kilda station or to pass through a set of gates. All printed on a off white card. The Victorian Railways continued to operate a bus service along the former Black Rock - Sandringham line, long after the tram line closed. Passengers could often transfer from one service to another - eg changing from a tram to a bus, without having to pay a second fare. A transfer ticket would be issued on request and this along with the original fare ticket would be shown to the conductor or bus driver at the time of transfer. Check tickets would be issued by a conductor to record that the person had shown a periodical eg scholars ticket. This enabled passenger counting as well. This Certificate has been issued to Kevin F Tierney, who worked initially as a University Student conductor during the summer holidays, then as a conductor or a driver during two following years. Ephemera - Ticket Block - VFL Park Concession $1, 1980s
VFL Park did not have a formal public transport service and this was one reason for its demise. See the reference for its history. Public transport - buses were provided from a number of railway stations. This block of tickets - blue ink on off-white paper consisted of two hundred tickets - VFL Park - Concession - Single Journey - $1. Ticket number in red ink. The block was originally numbered 11800 to 12000. Five tickets remain on the block. See items 3, 1674 and 1675 for other examples. Folder with papers - Manilla folder containing some 30 documents outlining the procedures for employing staff for the crewing of trams, tradesmen and other grades. Comprising primarily foolscap duplicated, quarto sheets but with some samples actual printed documents that were required. A - Employment Procedures, listing the following documents, each marked with the respective number using a blue pencil in the top left hand corner. Document No. (images refer to the sheet number) .1 - Interview Card .2 - General information regarding conditions of employment (Age, Height, Weight etc.) .3 - Education Test .4 and 5 - Application for Employment and Result of Medical examination .6 - List of Medical Standards for eyesight ( photocopy which is going to brown - reprinted and placed in a envelope as it was affecting the next sheet.) .7 - Chest X-Ray .8 - Form for attachment to depot closest to home or closest depot at which vacancy exists. .9 - Agreement form (8 and 9 stapled together) .10 - Requisitions for uniform .11 - Directions to Store and School .12 and .13 - Application for Re-employment and Special Day Report stapled together .14 - MMTB Employees Record .15 - Reference Investigations - where considered necessary .16 - Tradesmen and Miscellaneous Workers Identification Slip - in triplicate .17 - Weekly changes Report - used for adjusting staff totals of Conductors, Drivers - example dated 29.2.1964 - list names, starts, re-employments, new drivers, transfers, bus drivers, regressions, medical retirements, dismissals, resignations, noting who were University Students. .18 - List of Student Conductors to attend class .19 - Identification slip for cashier and employees pass issue .20 - List of (new) starters in the service - for use by Cashier and weekly changes .21 - Particulars of Platform Staff - used for compiling weekly staff totals .22 - Application for permission to train as a tram or bus driver .23 - Instruction to Mobile Inspector to recover absentee's uniform .24 - details of traffic employees leaving service .25 - Employee to be paid off Not numbered B - Procedure re Conductor Applications - (2 sheets) C - Student Conductors' Training (10 sheets) D - Summary of Curriculum of Training for Electric Tram Drivers.trams, tramways, personnel, conductors, training, employment, employees, drivers, procedures, instructions, uniforms, medical, interviews, reports, discipline -

Memorandum, typed foolscap, 8 sheets, titled "Memo to Members of the Board - The Bourke Street - Nicholson Street and Clifton Hill and Northcote Conversion" dated 13/10/1938. The report looks at major English cities, excluding London, transport to developing housing areas outside existing transport links, costs of conversion compared to buses, success of diesel buses (referred to as crude oil buses), construction of new tram lines, use of trolley buses and tables looking at the cost and revenues for each routes, comparison of service levels, capital costs and other factors. Recommends that the Collingwood cable line be closed as soon as practicable. Agfa Colour slide, cardboard mount, by Keith Caldwell dated 12 March 1960, of W5 818 running in Mount Alexander Road, North Essendon, crossing the street access for Marco Polo Street. The tram showing route 59, Essendon Aerodrome, has trolley wheels and has a second person in the cab, possibly a trainer. Unusually the tram number is placed above the headlight, In the background are the palm trees in the centre median plantation. Note the Centre poles, overhead construction and street light. Also in the background is a Mobil Service station that later became a garden centre.
