These are letters from 1999 concerning the formation of the Western Branch of Melbourne Legacy, and other branch matters. The Footscray/Sunshine branch and the Williamstown/Werribee branch were merged in 1999. The documents give information about Junior Legatees and Widows under their care, and a brief history of the Williamstown/Werribee branch.The letters bring to our notice the amalgamation of two branches due to declining Legatee numbers and the ability of the remaining Legatees to provide the service of care under the Legacy Charter. After the second World War Legacy understood there was a need to redefine the criteria of people that they help. There was discussions about whether the deceased serviceman had to have served overseas or whether they could have served in any capacity. Legatee Cremor proposed the motion at the General Meeting on 9 May 1949. The motion was: 'That the eligibility rules of JLC be amended to provide that the dependents of any deceased member who was attested for service in the Armed Forces of the 1939-45 War be eligible for Legacy benefits.' He also prepared a two page document of the arguments for the changes. A second document lays out the arguments against the motion. A file copy of a 2 page letter to the President supports Legatee Cremor's motion, the signature is indistinct so it's not known who wrote it. The arguments against included that the extension of eligibility would greatly increase Legacy's workload and budget required would increase 10 fold. They estimated that the men of the '1914 War' would be retired by 1965, and that there weren't enough men from the '1939 War' to make the decision. The notation H24 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A function in Legacy House with Legatee John Sullivan welcoming nine founding members of a new support group. L/ Sullivan was president in 1991. The lady in blue and white stripes is Legacy widow, Margaret Anderson who is now a legatee. The lady in red is also in many other photos and could be a staff member. Other names are not known. This document was written to celebrate the 60th birthday of Legatee Leigh Johns in 1983. It is a collection of poems written about L/ Johns by different authors as a tribute to him reaching 60 years of age. Leigh Johns was born in 1923, the date of the founding of Melbourne Legacy, and became a Legatee in 1956, serving on 15 ML Boards and as an executive member of the Legacy Co-ordinating Council . He had a distinguished war record in the RAF during WWII and survived 32 bombing raids over France and Germany. He was an enthusiastic contributor of poetry to the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin which explains why this document is in the form of a poem. Part of a Bulletin newsletter that includes a poem by L.F.J. (Legatee Leigh Johns) titled Reflections. The poem honours the service to Legacy by Wendy Faulkner who came to Legacy on 13 September 1965 after working on the stage. Rest of the page and its reverse item highlights the Induction of three legatees, Amendments to diary and mailing lists, Transfers between branches, Resignations, and Nominations. These notifications were announced during the weekly luncheon meetings and later published in the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin.This item records the way in which Legacy kept Legatees informed of the arrivals and departures of members. A green tunic made for junior legatees to attend girls' classes. It is in great condition and is an excellent example of the uniforms used at Legacy classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy would then conduct Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. Legacy provided uniforms free of charge for all girls attending the classes. Typical of the time the tunic appears hand made but many mothers and legatee wives would have been capable of making uniforms as they also made many of the costumes for the annual demonstrations. The tunic was donated back to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood and passed away in April 2020. Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann and passed away in 1986. Also donated were a photo of the girls at calisthenics classes, a junior legatee certificate, a souvenir handkerchief from the 90th anniversary celebrations and a $100 Legacy badge.
