This area was the scene of many garden parties and Wedding parties and contained a large water fountain. The property remained in the Ready family until sometime after the death of Mabel Ready in 1967." Always known as Gus, he was actually George Gervasoni. Born to George Gervasoni and Annie Pedretti in 1909, Gus was a member of the Daylesford Fire Brigade and played Australian Rules Football for Dayelsford. George was the Australian born son of Italian Luigi Gervasoni and German Eliza Ritzau both of Yandoit Creet. Annie was the Australian born daughter of Swiss Martino Pedretti and Sarah Ind, the daughter of English exile George Ind, both of Dry Diggings. Emil Jackschowsky was born in Insterburg (Prussia then Germany now Russia). He met Mary Schwerkolt aboard the 'Seydlitz' on its way to Australia. He was working as a ships steward. They married in Pittsburg in U.S.A in 1912. While visiting family in Germany he was conscripted. His son Walter was born in 1919. Emil became an American citizen in 1928. A massive tree stump at the end of the Crowes yard served as a buffer stop for trains. In 1941 it was put to use when locomotive G41 spectacularly collided with it. On a particularly foggy night the driver became disoriented, passing unawares through Crowes station and smashing into the stump. The Garrett came to an ungainly halt, and it was three days before the work gang had the stranded locomotive re-railed. It became known locally as 'Over the Black Stump'.B/W.
