The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at an un-identified location, showing the removal of the yokes and track where two cable lines crossed over each other. Shows the former cable tram yokes that supported the slot rails and some details of the cable tunnels and pits. The man in the bottom left could be cutting the yokes with an oxy-acetylene cutting torch. In the view are at the top of the photo some rails can be seen. There were a number of points where the cable tram crossed other electric or cable tram lines. Given the small work site and men involved the location could potentially be either Johnston Street and Smith Street or Johnston St and Nicholson Street. The 1955 Annual Report notes that work commenced following the completion of the Queen's visit in March 1954 and that all work was done by day-labour. Photos show the construction of King St overpass in Flinders St which was part of the project to construct a bridge over the Yarra River and provide a new southern outlet road between the city and eventually St Kilda Junction. The overpass construction was commenced in 1959 with tramway works first commencing. It was demolished in 2005. 1 - looking west at Market St. 2 - looking east from Spencer and Flinders St with the railway viaduct behind. 3 - Tram lines diverted onto the new overpass. Allan Charles Quinn went to sea aged 16 and photographed his work and the places he visited. His collection of photo albums provides a pictorial autobiography for a period in his life. Included in the Allan Charles Quinn Collection are a series of letters written to and from his mother.Black and white photograph of landing docks at San Francisco. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. By1880 most railway crossings were identified by a sign, although at very busy crossings a watchman was posted. Eventually most stations were manned and gates were installed. The watchman was generally housed in a small wooden or brick building with a clear view of the single line. The next stage was mechanical closing of the gates, using a lever situated in a shed behind the gatehouse. By 1956 automatic barriers had been installed. A working model of the gate style crossing can be seen at New Street Brighton.A collection of 12 black and white photographs of the Windsor family who lived in the gatehouse next to the Tunstall station. The stationmaster Ernest Windsor was also responsible for track maintenance between Ringwood and Middleborough Road Box Hill. His wife Betty Jean Windsor was gatekeeper for 2 years. One of a series of photographs, taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, his family later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Dandenong Office.The image is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs. The photographs, both individually and collectively, richly detail the labour of workers and the tools and machinery used to create and extend Melbourne's public transport network in the years preceding and during World War 1.Digital copy of an original mounted photograph showing the old railway crossing in Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn.
