The donor received the projector from a relative. He used it in the City of Whitehorse and surrounding areasWaterworth Slide Film Strip Projector, Model A - 300 watt, without a fan but with ventilating slots on top and an open bottom for air to flow. It has a carrying handle and a power lead with 3 pin plug which is wired in permanently. The projector lamp is at rear under the carrying handle. Image is projected through three stage lens via via the image on the 35mm strip or slide. The front lens is adjustable for focus. A knurled nut enables a height adjustment at front. Slides are inserted through the holder - whilst one slide is shown the other can be loaded ready to be slid in front of the light. The film strip holder is missing. The unit is finished in a grey hammer finish paint used in 1960 t0 1980s. The operating instructions are filed in the supplementary envelope. Mitcham Post Office began in a shop in Whitehorse Road next but one from Elizabeth Street and Whitehorse Road. They moved to a shop on the corner of Whitehorse Road and Station Street with Mrs. Markham as Post Mistress. She had an assortment of items for sale in the shop. They daughter May married and lived with her parents and had quite a large family. Mary set up a photographic service, developing films and taking portraits of people and taking sets of photographs of the Mitcham area and selling photographic supplies for Kodak and Hesma. Twenty-five grand allotments were offered for sale in the subdivision known as the Kia Ora Estate in Balwyn in the early 1930s. The streets identified in the subdivision include Whitehorse Road, Barnsbury Road, Campbell Road, Mont Albert Road and Burke Road. The lots were advertised for £10 deposit, with the balance to be paid over 5 years at 5 per cent per annum. The lots bordering Whitehorse Road were nominated as potential valuable shop sites, while the Mont Albert Road lots were advertised as having ‘wonderful views’. The Outer Circle Railway Line is shown traversing the subdivision. Installed on building at 528 Whitehorse Road, Mitcham between 1938 and 1944. Building was a Newsagency and Post Office.Patrick and Bertha Markham operated the newsagency and post office on this site from 1925 to 1944. In the late 30s a range of photographic and developing services and supplies were added to the business. The sign was installed under the veranda on the Whitehorse Road frontage to advertise Kodak services. Also, their daughter Mary was a keen photographer and started a business as a child photographer. In 1944, both her parents died and Mary inherited the premises and continued the Kodak agency as part of her business. Mary and her husband, Harold, sold the former Mitcham post office to the PMG in mid 1957 and removed the Kodak sign as they departed.Metal sign L 1220cm x H 295cm .
