Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.Handkerchiefs, 1950s
These handkerchiefs come from the estate of Ena Heazlewood. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920 and worked as a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. In 1942 she married a Warrnambool man, Jack Heazlewood, who was stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney at the time. They later lived in Sydney. These items are of interest as examples of the handkerchiefs found in a woman’s collection mid last century and as mementoes of a former Warrnambool resident, Ena Heazlewood. These are seven handkerchiefs. .1 A silk handkerchief with a white centre and a green dot pattern border .2 A white silk handkerchief with an embroidered spray of pink flowers and green stems in one corner .3 A white silk handkerchief with multi-coloured embroidery in one corner .4 & .5 Two white silk handkerchiefs with a multi-coloured embroidered letter ‘E’ in one corner and a fluted embroidered edge. .6 & .7 Two pink nylon handkerchiefs with a fluted edge and an overall impressed pattern of pink flowers and green stems .6 & .7 Nylon Made in Japanvintage women’s accessories, todd & heazlewood families, warrnambool, history of warrnambool -

Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. Photograph of a building on Legatee Stan Savige's property. It is labelled as Legacy Camp, Somers. This appears to be the original camp buildings established by Legacy in the 1930s. Melbourne Legacy provides camps for junior legatees. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring East, close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Circa 1918: Various Photos of the Cheltenham Methodist Youth Group. Row 1 and 2: "At Flinders". Row 3: 1st Left, "Holidaying at Cockatoo". in 1852 Stephen Charman, who had arrived in Melbourne 1842 aged 21 years as one of Henry Dendy's emigrants, purchased 160 acres in Spring Grove ( now Cheltenham). Stephen and his family lived in a wattle and daub hut and worked hard to establish a market garden, poultry and pig farm. The first Methodist Church Services were held at their home. In 1855 Stephen gave 1 acre of his land on Balcombe Road to the Methodist Church for a School, Burial ground and a Chapel which was built in 1857.The Methodist Church, Balcombe Road was the 2nd religious building to be erected in Spring Grove now known as Cheltenham c 18577 small black and white photographs of the Cheltenham Methodist Youth Group at Flinders, Cockatoo and unkown locations, c 1918 . The Club known today as the Bendigo Bowls Club originated from the Sandhurst Bowling Club in 1870/71 changing its name to Bendigo in 1872. It is located in central Bendigo just a short walk through the picturesque Rosalind Park from Bendigo’s central business district. https://bendigobowlsclub.com.au/history/ William Henry Sunderland was a Bendigo investor, member of the Bendigo Stock Exchange and director of many mining companies. His father, George, had been a mounted trooper assigned as a gold escort between Melbourne and Bendigo. William became the President of the Bendigo Bowling Club in 1916.Leather satchel with gold embossed text. Text reads B.B.C Holmes Trophy. Won by W. H. Sunderland. 1906-7. Inside the satchel are eight items pertaining to a men's toiletry set. These include; a comb, a mirror, a clothing brush, a glass cylinder with metal lid, a small metal tin, a razor strop, a shoe hook and a soap case. Four items appear to be missing from the set. The letter was written by William Darwin while convalescing in Scotland from wounds to Mrs Symes re Arthur Edward Symes No 1001 7th Batt AIF. Darwin No 780 enlisted on 18.8.14 in the 7th Batt AIF age 22 years. Embarked for Egypt 19.10.14, hospital 15.3.15 with Influenza, returned to duty 3.4.15, embark for Gallipoli 5.4.15, promoted A/Sgt 28.8.15. Admitted to hospital 18.9.15 classed Typhoid then Enteric, documents also state that he was buried by a shell explosion for 3 - 4 hours, dug out and was unconscious for 2 - 3 days. When recovered could not use left arm or leg and vomited frequently independent of food, there was also a wound to the left leg. He is returned to Australia on 17.10.16 classed Shell Shock and discharged medically unfit on 31.1.17. This book documents the story of the Parnaby Brothers who migrated to Australia from Whenby in North Yorkshire, England via Natal in South Africa. They settled in the Wodonga district of Victoria. The dedication on page 3 of the book says "To George, William and Matthew Parnaby. We can only wonder at the adventurous spirit, courage and fortitude of the three brothers who arrived in this country with an ambition to better themselves and provide for their families." George arrived at Port Melbourne from Port Natal on 11 January 1864. On the same voyage was his brother William and a nephew Charles. George and his wife Rachel settled at Howlong on the Victoria/NSW border where he worked as a farmer and labourer. George died at Howlong on 26 JUne 1887. William and his son Charles settled in Albury. In 1869/70 he was listed as a property owner at Wooragee, including a house, farm and vineyard. William died in Albury on 20 February 1894. Matthew originally arrived in Hobsons Bay, Victoria in 1854. After 6 years on the goldfields he returned to South Africa and then to England to marry. They eventually returned to Australia in 1863. After some time in Melbourne, Matthew moved to Belvoir (Wodonga). By August 1877 he owned 104 acres of grazing land at House Creek. He steadily became one of the most successful farmers in the district and increased his landholdings. He spent the remainder of his life in Wodonga where he served as a member of the Shire Council for some years. Matthew never forgot his birthplace and called his property "Whenby Grange". He died in Wodonga on 7 October 1903.A volume of 342 pages, including photos and maps.
