Shoes, circa 1867
These shoes were worn by Emily Cock (nee Smith), the daughter of wealthy early settler John Matthew Smith. From 1856 until 1931 the Smiths lived at 'Castlefield', a mansion on a vast estate that at one time stretched along South Road from Bluff Road to Hampton Street. The land was gradually subdivided, and the house is now a part of Haileybury College. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph
The photograph depicts a mine cut with a tractor. Water is being used to sluice the front of the tractor, possibly to separate any gold that may have been picked up from the earth. A few people watch the demonstration. Water was a significant part of gold mining in the Beechworth area and miners used a method known as 'hydraulic sluicing'. Due to the amount of water required, many water races were constructed throughout the Beechworth Mining District. These were cut through solid rock and are an example of engineering achievement. Water usage in the area put Beechworth at the heart of water policy, with many firsts for Victorian colonial goldfield water management being established in the Beechworth Mining District. This photograph is significant as it depicts the use of water in gold mining in Beechworth. Beechworth was notable for it's use of water in mining.Black and white square photograph (portrait orientation) printed on matte photographic paper.Reverse: SW-50-2 / 1997 31136 / unreadable pencil markingssluicing, gold mining, mining, hydraulic sluice, hydraulic sluicing, beechworth mining district -

Memorabilia - Commemorative Ribbons, Electric Light Official Switching On Ceremony ribbon, 1937
On Tuesday 28th September 1937, to the applause and cheering of a crowd of more than 300 people, a ceremonial ribbon was cut with a ‘beautiful pair of silver scissors’ by Mrs W H Everard, wife of local MP William Everard. The ribbon cutting ceremony was to officially turn on the mains electricity supply to Whittlesea and district. The moment the ribbon was cut there was a ‘blaze of light’. There were initially 78 customers, including the Shire of Whittlesea which had contracted the SEC to supply street lighting in Whittlesea, Yan Yean, Mernda and South Morang (Advertiser, Friday 1st October 1937, page 1). This ribbon is possibly a fragment of the official opening ribbon that was stamped with the date and details of the switching on of electricity in Whittlesea and given to patrons. Machine - Scarificator
Scarifiers were traditionally used for blood letting, and in folk medicine for the practice of cupping. Spring loaded knives cut the skin, then a warmed metal or glass cup is placed over the cuts. As the air inside the cup cools, it creates a vacuum drawing out the "bad" blood. The process is also related to the ancient medical theory of "humors". This theory dates back to the Hippocratic tradition and persisted through to the mid-19th Century. According to this theory, the body had four "humors", "airs" or "elements" which neeed to be kept in balance. Any imbalance could cause illness and this was often explained in terms of excess fluids. One prescribed treatment was to remove the excess blood which would restore the balance.Square, solid brass object with lever to release blades underneath.Etched on side: Mundy / Londonmetal, blades, bloodletting -

Gadgets like this Universal food chopper are typical of domestic inventions designed to reinforce the principles of thrift and labour-saving. Many of these gadgets were imported from the United States.
