Cohen; R.S. Anderson; Frances John Perry Faith Everard Pardew and Charles Anthony Wurf. The tin was designed and used by the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. to store and sell golden syrup which is a by-product of cane sugar, molasses and treacle. The practices of early pharmacists are revealed through these items. The items have a clear association with Orbost.3210.15 is a rusty tin of CSR Golden Syrup. It is a yellow, red, brown, white tin with a black lid. used to sell and store golden syrup. The kilogram tin has the words 'golden syrup' printed in large red letters. There is a recipe for ANZAC BISCUITS on the back of the tin. Inside two concentric circles - "FROM THE AUSTRALIAN CANEFIELDS NATURALLY GOLDEN" around a drawing of a sugar refinery. 3210.16 is a glass jar with a black metal lid. Made by Mrs Sayer in 1980 at Deniliqiun TAFE "Garment Assembly" course which was 2 years long. A popular course which was common in those days, Mrs Sayer was always crafty but not good at the other subjects. She wore this hat with the full ensemble also containing a dress and wool coat from 1980 - 2014.Small brim women's sunhat. Sandy brown in colour. Floral ribbon tied around the hat just on top of the brim which is secured with a green pin on right side of hat. On the front there is a small gold ANZAC badge that reads "Lest We Forget". On the left hand side there is a brown brooch with feathers attached, and the back of the hat features another brooch, which is round in shape and features 6 jewels with one large jewel in the middle. The Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia was formed in 1916 to support servicemen returning from World War 1. In 1940 its name was changed to Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia and again in 1966 to Returned Services League of Australia. Arthur Ernest Beard enlisted in the 10th Battalion in 1914 and was discharged as medically unfit in 1918. His service included three years and 115 days of overseas service. He was gassed during his war service, resulting in ongoing health issues. Beard received an incapacity pension. Despite his ill health, Arthur dedicated many years of service to the committee of the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia Wodonga branch. At various times he served as President and secretary. He was on the committee when the branch was lobbying for the construction of a Soldiers' Memorial and also a Soldiers' Memorial Hall for Wodonga. Arthur also participated in groups and community activities, including the Wodonga Boys’ Club, Wodonga Public Library Committee and the Wodonga and District Progress Association. Arthur died on 29 Jun 1940 in Wodonga, Victoria, aged 46 years. This certificate is significant as it recognises service to the Wodonga Branch of the RSSILAA coloured certificate on heavy card presented by the Wodonga Branch of the Returned Sailor and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia. It features an archway imprinted with the name of the RSSIL with the League emblem surrounded by the flags of England, Australia and the Royal Australian Navy. It is adorned with an anchor and rifle and the words "Great War 1914 - 1919. An image of Anzac House, the headquarters of the R.S.S.I.L.A. in Melbourne is on the lower left hand side. Photographer Bill McAuley was with the Valley Voice newspaper 1978-1979 when he took this image of local identy and school lollypop supervisor, Jock Read on his horse Lofty. According to Jock's daughter, Sue Johnson, Jock had acquired Lofty only about one year before this photo was taken. William George Pyke enlisted in the 1st reinforcements 21st Batt AIF on 8.4.1915 No 1565 age 33 years 4 months. He was hospitalised at Anzac was returned to Australia and discharged medically unfit on 13.3.16. Classed “Asthma. He re enlisted again on 30.4.17 No 4869 in the 13th reinforcements 29th Batt then transferred to the 38th Batt on 1.1.1918. He was gassed severely on 11.8.18. These two photographs of a contingent from the Army Survey Regiment lowering the Australian flag were taken on Australia Day in Kerang, Victoria on the 26th of January 1996. Most units of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) provide contingents to regional towns in their local area to assist in commemoration ceremonies on days of national significance, such as Australia Day, ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. This was most likely one of the last occasions before the closure of the Army Survey Regiment. Two up has been played by Australians since 1850's. It was popular during WWI, during which time the soldiers referred to the game as SWY (which came from the German Zwei which is the word for two.) It's popularity continued through WWII and the BCOF constantly ran "SWY" schools. The game is now only legal to be played on Anzac day in Victoria, but in other states also on remembrance day. Two photos of journalist Edwin Maher signing copies of his books for Legatees at Legacy House. Presumably he had attended a Tuesday lunch meeting as a guest speaker. The books appear to be 'Stop the World I want to get on: How to drive yourself sane' (published 1993) and 'The Edwin Maher Scrapbook' (published 1990). Edwin Maher is a New Zealand born TV journalist who was a former ABC presenter. He helped present the Legacy Anzac Commemoration for Students in 1998.A record of a well known person attending Legacy House. Article written by the Age transport Reporter, Patrick Hatch. Discusses the possible non-return of trams to Domain Road following the opening of the new tram interchange at ANZAC station. Four soldiers mounted on horses in the forecourt of the Shrine of Remembrance. Three of the four that are named are Legatee Rex Hall, Billy Kent-Hughes and Legatee Bill Scott. The other rider's name and date unknown. An article in The Herald on 19 April 1975 mentions that Rex Hall, Jim Holland and Bill Scott would wear their Light Horse uniforms and lead the Anzac Day parade to the Shrine mounted on police horses (see 01023). Though the date on the back of the photo is 1967. It is believed these legatees rode in at least 13 Anzac Day marches. Wilfred Kent-Hughes, known as Billy, served in both World Wars, was a prisoner of the Japanese, an Olympic athlete (hurdles, Antwerp 1920) and a State and Federal politician and was awarded a Knighthood. His niece, Jane, is a Legatee in the South Gippsland Group. From another article found Colonel Rex Hall was a member of the 5th Light Horse Brigade in World War 1. Seven copies of a publication that highlights the significant events of the Legacy over the years and include a report from the President. From 2007 to 2012 it was published twice a year as 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights'. Pictures from many of the activities the widows are involved in such as exercise classes, walks and the preparation of rosemary sprigs for Anzac Day. The report also recaps events through the year such as outings and camps for the junior legatees, legacy week, schools Anzac commemoration and the public speaking contest. Up to the 1980s the annual report would usually contain pages containing the Presidents report and photos of significant events of the year. Between 1987 and 1990 these were published in a separate document called 'Highlights from the Annual Report'. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012.
