Diana NIKKELSON (c1943-30 December 2022) Diana Nikkelson is a Ballarat-based Gunditjmara elder. Her grandfather was Watchobaluk. A part of the stolen generation, Diana Nikkelson was one of 10 children, and she had nine children of her own. A founding member of the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative in the late-70s, Diana Nikkelson was a board director for 16 years and chair for six years. She worked on the Bunjil the Eagle installation at the Koorie Playground at Lake Wendouree, and designed the goanna which was etched into the paving along Police Lane in 2006, and has painted murals across Ballarat. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.AboriginalThis work by Ballarat-based Gunditjmara elder Diana Nikkelson was commissioned by the University of Ballarat (later Federation University) for use on the Aboriginal Employment Strategy brochure. This hand-made doll's apron was created using machine and hand stitching, by Phoebe Lowell, a 10-year-old schoolgirl in 1913. It was purchased in the late 1990s by the donor who later moved to Emerald but, at the time, had a 2nd hand decoration shop in Camberwell when she purchased this as part of a group of garments which included bloomers, lace collars and cuffs, camisoles etc - all of which have been donated to the Museum. The donor was advised at the time of her purchase that the garments were over 100 years old although this would not have been the case for this doll's apron.This doll's apron is a reminder of the tuition which schoolgirls routinely received in sewing and embroidery as these were considered essential skills for a future housewife.Very small cream-colored doll's apron with waistband and buttonhole but no button. Pleat running along the width of the apron above the hemline. Clipping glued to A4 sheet of paperClasses at Maroondah Secondary College were disrupted last Wednesday when about 50% of staff attended a city protest against the Kennett Government's first year in office. Years 9, 10 and 11 students were forced to stay home because of the stopwork organised by the Trades Hall Council. Other colleges in the Ringwood area that were affected are Heathmont, Norwood and Parkwood and also Croydon Community School. The teachers were protesting at the rate and number of changes that the Government has imposed on the Secondary College sector, and the lack of information concerning future changes.

Discharged from AIF 29.12.1919.An early model of a German steel helmet. The outer surface has been printed in camouflage colours of black, green and brown. The junction of the painted segment is covered with a 15mm black line, hand painted. Inside the helmet is a leather head band with (3) leather pouches. They are approx 112.5 cm long x 7.5 wide. In those leather pouches are dense cotton pads. The chin strap is leather and is intact. The helmet exterior has the classic "knobs" on either side of the forehead position. Higginson's menswear store was located in High Street Wodonga. Mr. Higginson first worked as a grocery boy at Farmer and Sons in Wodonga. He later moved to Rudines in Dean Street, Albury. He worked at this store, which sold clothing for both men and women for several years until he joined the army in 1942. After the war, he went back to school for a while, but then returned to Rudines. This was followed by 2 years at Stiff and Gannon's in Wodonga. He set about saving to have his own business, spending 5 years as manager at Trim's in Albury. Lionel Higginson met his future wife, Dulcie, at a social dance a few years after returning from the war. They both worked in menswear and were engaged 6 months later and started building their dream. This included building their own business. The business, L. A. Higginson's Menswear opened on 10 October 1958 and around 12 months later added a women's clothing line, Dee Gals. This became so popular that in 1995 Dee Gals moved in to its own shop in the arcade. When Lionel passed away in 1999, his eldest daughter Pauline, who supported the business from the time she was 15, helped her mother progress the business. At this stage managing 2 stores was very demanding so Dee Gals was closed. In 2000, Dulcie's daughter Michelle Matthews and husband Phil took over the business. Due to changing shopping approaches and demands of online shopping, the business closed on June 2023 after 65 years serving the community.This item is significant because it was used and distributed by a major retail business which operated in Wodonga for more than 65 years.A plastic shopping bag used and distributed by Higginson Menswear Wodonga. Gillies Bros Timeline 1929 Leslie Graham Gillies is born on July 12, 1929 in Charlton, Victoria, son of Donald John and Agnes Maud Gillies. 1943 At age 14, Les Gillies goes to work at the Aunt Sally Milk Bar. His employer is Les McClure of Dad’n’Dave Café and Four’n’Twenty pie fame. 1950 Les Gillies, with brothers Alan and Norm, opens a bakery and the Rosebud Tea Rooms in Mitchell Street, Bendigo. 1951 The Gillies brothers. open on the corner of Hargreaves and Mitchell Streets. Over fifty six years of trading this corner becomes known as the Gillies Pie corner. The brothers also run the Kentucky Café from this site. 1954 Les Gillies marries 3CV radio announcer, Yvonne Smith. 1958 The Gillies brothers purchase the Black Swan Hotel in McCrae Street and turn it into a factory and retail outlet. 1976 The Gillies brothers open up a new factory in Garsed Street, Bendigo. 1985 The Gillies brothers purchase Kay’s Cakes in Geelong and the pie making part of the business relocates to Geelong. The Garsed Street factory is used for packaging and distribution. 2007- The Gillies business is sold. The Pie corner changes hands and the Garsed Street factory becomes empty. 2015- Les Gillies passes away at the age of 86 years. 2026 The Garsed Street factory is empty and derelict. This postcard shows a photograph originally captured by Nicholas John Caire (1837–1918), a prolific photographer living in Melbourne at the turn of the century and capturing much of southeast Victoria with dry plate photography. The original photograph, labelled 'Bush Hut' and held by the National Gallery of Victoria, had a slightly wider angle of the hut included. A 'Selector' was a landholder after the late-19th century who was allowed to 'select' a piece of crown land, apply for a license to occupy it. In Victoria, Selectors would buy half of the land for £1 per acre, and pay rent on the other half for seven years; after this period, if they had made certain improvements to the land (fenced it, built on it, and grown crops on at least 10% of it) and had paid off the balance of the purchase price, the land would become theirs permanently. This system was designed to limit the numbers of 'Squatters' - settlers occupying land without government permission - and make it more feasible for poorer small farmers and labourers to acquire land. However, a Selector's life was often difficult due to the risk of having land unsuitable for crop farming, and opposition from powerful 'Squatters' whose occupied land was being redistributed. The postcard was part of the A.G.J. Series, which included many Australian sights including other photography from Caire. It was published by A.G.J. in Saxony.This postcard depicts a home in the region built in a style common for the time. The Selection system exemplified by this image was in force throughout the region.This black and white postcard depicts a wooden bush hut surrounded by trees, with a man seated in front of his home. There is a label below the picture, and text on the reverse denoting the postcard (with the Post Card titles struck out by three straight lines) and a pencil illustration of a leaf. Dr Ian Stephen MacLeod Murphy (1905-1981) studied at Geelong College (1919-1922) and then Melbourne University (1929-1937). He practised briefly at Ballarat Hospital before enlisting in the Royal Australian Navy in 1939 and serving as a navy surgeon for the duration of World War II. He moved to Emerald in 1947 after running a successful medical practice in Hampton, with the intention of retiring and breeding turkeys. But Emerald and the surrounding districts had no doctor, so for the next 34 years, Dr. Murphy provided tireless medical care to the local community. Dr Murphy was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for devotion to the health of the community. He died in 1981 at the age of 76 years and a Memorial Fund was set up in his name to provide support for local students studying Medicine. Not much is known of this typewriter's provenance since it was first sold, but its date of manufacture can be ascertained from its serial number - "LS12092". The L series of Remington Standard 10s began in 1920, with numbers in the 10,000s indicating 1921. An 'S' as the second letter of a two letter prefix indicates the typewriter was manufactured in June. It was then sold in Australia by Chartres Pty. Ltd., where it could have been used in any area of office work - possibly for many years, given it is still functional today.Typewriters were vital to the operation of a vast array of business, government, and personal endeavors. This is a functional, relatively old example of one major model, and is an exemplar of the typewriters of the early 20th century and their sturdy construction.This typewriter has a metal frame with black finish. It has a cylindrical platen on a carriage of black-finished metal and plated metal fittings. There is a curved folding paper guide behind platen. The type basket is horizontal and semicircular, with typebars pivoted at the rear. The ink ribbon is carried between two spools on horizontal axes, one on each side of the type basket. There are felt pads on the base of the four legs. The typewriter has a four-row QWERTY keyboard with 42 character keys. The 'SHIFT LOCK' and 'SHIFT KEY' keys are to the left of keyboard, while the 'BACK SPACER' and 'SHIFT KEY' keys are to the right. All keys are circular, white (to various degrees of yellowing) with black lettering. At the top of keyboard are five circular keys with fading red and black paint, with the numbers 1-5 displayed behind respective keys. The spacebar is along the front of keyboard.
