These horse shoes (one a stock horse and one a draft horse) were probably used in the mid 1900's. They have been roughly made suggesting that a professional blacksmith was not instrumental in their manufacture. On smaller or remote cattle stations either the lead stock man or owner would "fire up" the kiln to provide the adjustments required to the horse shoe to ensure a "tight" fit. The larger cattle stations had a "professional" blacksmith to cover all their "working" horses. Larger properties eg.large Northern territory cattle stations use helicopters for "cattle control".These horse shoes are very significant to the Kiewa Valley because of the early introduction of cattle stations in what initially was regarded as a semi remote location. The maintenance of horses hooves is an important requirement, especially during the period when cattle were grazed on the Bogong High Plains. The mustering and and moving cattle from the valley pastures to the high country was a demanding and dangerous exercise requiring "sure footed" stock horses. A scientific study started in 1947 to study the impact of grazing cattle on the natural Alpine and sub Alpine vegetation found grazing cattle had an adverse affect on the natural Alpine and sub alpine vegetation, and grazing on the plains was stopped by the Victorian Government in 2005.This "camp draft" in the High Plains could take up to six weeks.Both these horse shoes have been "roughly" made but are specifically made for the type of horse which wore them. The smaller of the two is for the stock horse/riding horse and the lager one is for the larger draft horse. Each horse type has a specific role to play in the the type of activity it was used for. The small horse shoe has six "nail" holes for attachment to the horse hoof by special nails. The larger shoe has seven "nail" holes. Five Cornish brothers Anthony, Thomas, William, John and Edward Truscott made their way to Australia after mining work in Cornwall began to dry up. They settled in Long Gully and California Gully and later spread out to Strathfieldsaye and further through the region. Jean McDonald organised a family reunion which had activities at the Long Gully Uniting Church, the Long Gully Uniting Church Hall and Lake Weeroona. Work Book and Accounts (Eldridge and Burnet - but not titled). What appears to be a running daily work book with handwritten notes about a wide range of business activities (1897 -1900) comprises the (now rolled) book, working from one end of the book. Working from the other end of the book are handwritten accounts for the period 1897-1898. The 31 Community and Neighbourhood Houses in the Outer East have joined forces to put together a network booklet detailing the activities of each house. A Volunteer Fire Brigade was established in Kew in 1879 and a fire station established in Walton Street, Kew. The Brigade was formally disbanded by the Fire Brigade Act of 1890 and the volunteers replaced by a unit of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in 1891. The building shown in this rare photograph was constructed in 1893. In the background can be seen a house on the corner of Walton and Peel Streets, one of two, built in 1893 for firemen of the Brigade. An article in The Weekly Times (1 April 1911) records that: "Kew Troop - A,S.M. Williams reports:- The troop under S.M. Kellett. marched to the Kew Fire Brigade station, to receive instruction in fire drill from Mr Gross, the officer in charge, but as he was unexpectedly called away, the S.M. S and A.S.M had to instruct the Troop. Every boy was taught how to sink the hydrant, and how to couple and uncouple the hose. The hose reel was then brought into action, and the boys were divided into sets of six, each division taking its turn in pulling the reel up a hill to the water plug, where the hydrant was quickly sunk by one Scout, two more uncoupling the hose and coupling it on to the hydrant. We have gained four recruits during the last week, and are expecting two more next week."This is a fine, original photograph, probably taken by a commercial photographer, showing the 1st Kew Scouts in front of the old Kew Fire Brigade building in Walton Street in 1911. The building, constructed in 1893 was later demolished in 1941. This is a rare historic photograph of the Station. The reverse details the names and addresses of the Scouts featured in the photograph. An integral part of the Scout program is service to others and working with the fire brigade would have been just one of many such training activities enthusiastically undertaken by the Scouts. The Kew Fire Brigade had hand-drawn fire appliances up until 1919 when a motorised vehicle was purchased. The fire station was replaced by the Belford Road station in 1941 and subsequently demolished. The 1st Kew Scouts was one of the first Scout Troops in Victoria, being formed in 1909. From 1927 they met in a magnificent Scout Hall in Disraeli Street, Kew until it was demolished in 1993. Still operating (in 2020) from their new Scout Hall on the corner of Kilby Road and Kellett Grove, Kew.1st Kew Scouts undertaking water rescue training at Bulleen. The photograph was most likely taken while the Scouts were camping beside the river one summer, with the programs generally including not only fun and games but also varying training activities. At the time many locals swam in the river. 1924 was well before the construction of major water storage dams and urbanisation of the upper reaches of the Yarra River, which significantly reduced downstream flows and water quality. These days, the Scouts tend to raft and canoe in the Yarra, rather than swim. On front: 1924. Has four pages of financial statements. The First World War restricted progress in acquiring materials. The tramcar bodies were purchased from the Hawthorn Tramway Trust (HTT). This is a hurricane lamp, so called because the tall glass dome was designed to protect the flame from excessive draft. These lamps were common in households in the first half of the 20th century ( used for house lighting) and later used for camping and out door activities.This item is retained as an example of type of lighting used in pre electricity times.This is a metal lamp with a glass bowl contained within a metal frame with a handle. There is a mantle inside the bowl. On the metal frame and base are various mechanisms for controlling the flame and a place for filling the container at the bottom with kerosene. The Tawonga branch of the C.W.A. commenced on the 7th Feb. 1946 and often combined activities with the other branches in the Kiewa Valley. The C.W.A. aimed to improve health, welfare and education for women and children in the country. The members achieved these aims by being involved in handcrafts of all kinds.Women living in Tawonga were mostly on farms and, in 1946, when the branch commenced would have been feeling more remote with WW11 having an effect on available workers and the well being of the women and children.The book has a cover with Autumn colours of flowers in a vase with the title in block letters of pale yellow. The written and illustrated history of Guides (11 to 14) and Brownies (7 to 10 year olds) in Tawonga commencing in 1951. Lord Baden-Powell first organized the groups for girls in c1914. This is the story told by the Rev. C. Fraser of his two years as a Home Missionary of the Presbyterian Church in the Otway Ranges in 1891-2. The area covered was from Lorne to Peterborough. The booklet includes the names and activities of many settlers of the time and a description of the wreck of the Newfield. This book is of interest to researchers looking for information on the Otway Ranges settlers at the end of the 19th century. It includes names and events and gives an interesting insight into life in the Otway Ranges in the 1890s. This is a small booklet of 44 pages with a red cover and the title printed in black on the front cover. The pages have been stapled together. There are no photographs or illustrations.
