Photograph - Haeusler Collection Photograph Group Portrait by Seaside c. late 1800s
The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. The photographer and subjects of this photograph are unidentified. It belongs to a collection of Haeusler family personal belongings, and is possibly a family photograph. This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history.A sepia toned group portrait photograph of people wearing Victorian era clothing at the seaside. photograph, photography, family photograph, portrait, photographic portrait, seaside, ocean, beach, victorian, wodonga, haeusler collection -

He sailed from Melbourne for Egypt in June, 1915, and had been at the front in France since April last. He also served ten months in the Naval Bridging Train before joining the artillery. He was born in Edmonton, England, and lived in Magill for about five years. He was in his 28th year." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 30 Sep 1916 (nla.gov.au)As his occupation was seaman, we can assume George Henry Martin visited the Mission. The Senior Chaplain, Alfred Hurney Goldsmith, RANR, was appointed chaplain of the Naval Bridging Train in 1914. (Jottings 31, Midwinter 1914). We can only imagine the two men knew each other and that the portrait was donated by George himself or by his family to the Mission.Portrait of ANZAC soldier in 1915naval bridging train, france, ww1, thelma-duryed, adelaide, george henry martin 1888-1916 -

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RANZCOG)
Framed portrait of Sir James Young Simpson
This print of Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870) was given to the College by Robyn Adams, the daughter of the late obstetrician Gordan Findlay. The portrait was gifted to Dr Findlay when he stated his obstetrical practice in Wellington in 1945. The portrait was then passed to Robyn’s late husband, dermatologist Dr John Adams FRACP FACD, and hung on the wall of his dermatology practice in Wellington until 2014. Sir James Young Simpson was a significant figure in the field of obstetrics. Admitted to the University of Edinburgh at the age of fourteen, he was responsible for introducing the use of chloroform for safe analgesia in childbirth, as well as for the development of an ‘air extractor’ (the forerunner to the modern vacuum extractor) and the creation of obstetric forceps with both long and short handles. Significantly, Simpson’s long handled forceps also became the prototype for many subsequent British designs.Charcoal print in an oval shaped wooden frame. Print features a head and shoulders portrait image of a man, pictured slightly side on with his eyes looking to the left of the viewer. The main is wearing a coat, waistcoat, and a shirt buttoned up to the collar, and has dark coloured hair reaching to his shoulders.anaesthesia -

Photograph - Framed Portrait, Cecil Beaton, Queen Elizabeth II, 1953
Portrait photographs of royal figures were hung in government offices and buildings. In some cases they were also displayed in homes. There are numerous portraits of Queen Elizabeth II most of which have been widely reproduced.Framed portrait photograph of Queen Elizabeth II, taken June 2, 1954, by Cecil Beaton. Although the image appears at first glance to be set in Westminster Abbey, the photographer actually employed a theatrical backdrop for the photo, which was taken in a drawing room at Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty wears the imperial state crown, created for Queen Victoria’s 1838 coronation, and holds the orb and scepter, looking every bit the picture of reigning British royalty.queen elizabeth ii, cecil beaton, royal portraits -
