The move to build the Mechanics Institute was started in 1883 and the foundation stone was laid by Lady Janet Clarke in 1885. The Johnstone family were connected with the Craiglea Winery in Sunbury from 1864 to 1883. It was established by James Johnston, the father of Wilfred Henry. Charles Johnston took over the winery in 1885 and in 1897 he purchased 'Kignane'. A cousin ran Craiglea until 1905A photocopy taken from an older portrait of Wilfred Henry Johnston. A set of 12 photographs of the 'Enterprize Project' showing the different stages of the rebuilding of the historic schooner 'Enterprize' which brought early setters to Victoria from Tasmania in 1834. George Evans who settled in Sunbury was one of the schooner passengers.A coloured photograph of the early stages in the reconstruction of the schooner 'Enterprize'. The series of 15 photographs were taken to bless the laying of the keel of the schooner 'Enterprize' on the 29th August, 1991. George Evans, who settled at Emu Bottom in Sunbury, travelled from Tasmania to Melbourne in the 'Enterprize' in 1834. The event took place at South Wharf in Melbourne. The Rupertswood Battery were present and Irene Evans was a member of the official party.Irene Evans is seated on the keel of the 'Enterprize' and is surrounded by eight members of the Rupertswood Battery who are in full ceremonial dress. The original swing bridge was built across the Deep Creek in 1854 to allow the Daniel family to visit the Dickens sisters. The original section of the Ball Court Hotel despite many exterior changes has not over the years undergone great structural changes since it was originally built in the 1870's by John Cahill.A coloured photograph of the original part of the Ball Court Hotel on the corner of Jackson and Macedon Sreets. The public bar entrance is on the corner of the building with a large window and a smaller one along Jackson Street and 3 windows and doorway along Macedon Street. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1901 and the present red brick building was built by George Millett. The hotel provided meals and accommodation for rail travellers.A coloured photograph of the Royal Hotel which is situated on the sw corner of Brook and Evans Streets. A grey car is angle parked on the LHS of the photograph and there is a line of plane treet around the curbside. The 2 storey hotel has red brick walls with cream trim around the windows and blue shutters on the windows on the upper storey. The roof is clad with terracotta tiles.
