Ada of California was a Melbourne swimwear company founded in the early 1950s by Brighton locals Ada and Toni Murkies. Born in Poland in 1922, Ada was 17 when the Second World War reached her doorstep. She and her family were torn from their home by Soviet soldiers and sent to a brutal labour camp in Siberia as part of a series of mass deportations. In order to escape the horrific conditions of the camp, Ada and her sister Barbara joined the Soviet-backed Polish Army. During her time in the military she became close with a handsome young Jewish officer, Lieutenant Antoni Murkies, who later became her husband. After the war Toni was awarded 15 medals including the highest Polish military honour, the Virtuti Militari. Ada was awarded 10 medals, including the Order of the Cross of Grunwald. Emigrating to Australia as postwar refugees in 1948, Ada and Toni arrived in Melbourne with little to their name. Working initially in garment factories and building their connections, by the mid-1950s the couple were able to start a company of their own, with Ada designing the garments and Toni managing the business. Within ten years, Ada of California swimwear was being sold in department stores throughout Australia, and the Murkies family were able to build a permanent home of their own in Brighton. By the early 1980s they had acquired several other major labels, including Watersun. Polish-born designer David Waters first began producing swimwear in 1952. His mother Halina had recently opened a stall at Melbourne Queen Victoria Markets and was looking for swimsuits to sell; unable to find any she liked, she asked David to design something. He began making swimming costumes using his mother's sewing machine, in between his shifts working at a knitting factory. He had soon set up a small business in his parents' home, cutting patterns in one room while a machinist sewed them together in the next. His company, which he named Watersun, would become an iconic Australian swimwear label. During the early 1960s, Watersun developed its "Unquestionable Bra", an inbuilt moulded bra which was marketed as giving wearers a more natural bustline than other labels. The company was also known for its matching swimwear and beachwear, producing dresses, kaftans, tops and skirts in identical colours and prints to those used for many of its swimsuits. By 1967, the company was reportedly one of Australia's two biggest swimwear manufacturers, with over one hundred employees. Watersun was sold to Ada Productions in 1984 and was later acquired by Trackerjack Australasia. Apple packers were employed on piece work to pack fruit from the sizing graders into wooden boxes, following prescriptive packing charts that ensured a box of even sized fruit. Depicts women’s occupations in horticultural district. Photo depicting 12 women standing outside the Harcourt Fruit Growers Association packing shed on the loading dock. The registered office sign is on the wall behind Mrs I. Gibbons. There is other sign writing on the wall weather boards of the building. The weather boards to the left of the window appear to be second hand as the writing is partly covered up. It also appears to be warmer weather as all the women are in light clothing.

This photographic equipment was manufactured by Eastman Kodak for amateur photographers. It enabled them to develop their films in a simple and effective manner. This box and contents have no known local provenance but are retained as an example of early photographic equipment. The items will be useful for display. This is a Kodak film tank development box and contents. The box is rectangular and wooden with a light brown polished surface. The sides of the box rest on a base that is slightly larger than the box sides. The lid is a separate piece and slots into ridges on the inside of the top of the box. Under the lid is a printed set of instructions on paper. Inside, the box is painted black and on one side it has an affixed metal piece for the attachment of the film spool. A removable solid cylindrical silver metal drum is inside the box. This has an outer covering of corrugated cardboard. There are three unattached pieces inside the box– two silver metal rods with handles and one silver metal rod with two larger end pieces. Order of Australia Medal.This is full scale replica of an OAM It has a circular blue enamel ring in the centre. The word "Australia" is in the blue ring. The large gold section has a large quantity of replica gems. The top of the gold medal is a crown set with red and white enamel. A ring is above the crown. Attached to the ring is a brass loop 30mm long. Through the loop is a small piece of blue ribbon with gold wattle flowers printed on it. These coins were in use in Australia during the 20th century up to 1965. The coinage was based on the imperial system with the basic currency unit being the pound. In February 1966 decimal coinage was introduced in Australia with the basic currency unit being the dollar (equivalent in value to half a pound or ten shillings). This collection of coins shows what coins looked like in Australia before the introduction of decimal currency. It is a very useful display item. This is a collection of coins in a wooden box. The wood is polished and has brass hinges on the lid and a brass lock and keyhole on the box’s side. The lid is lined with blue felt and on the top of the lid is a much-scratched brass shield (intended for inscribing a name). Inside the box there is a clear piece of glass over the coins which are pasted onto a piece of buff-coloured paper. There are 40 coins in the box. This kit bag belonged to Keith Litchfield Arnel. Born in Kensington on 23 August 1910, and enlisting in Melbourne at the age of 33 on 14 July 1944, Keith Arnel served in the Royal Australian Air Force. At the time of his discharge, Keith Arnel had become a Flying Officer with the Air Force Headquarters Telecommunications Unit. Keith Arnel had two service numbers, VX68230 and 129880.Blue-grey kit bag, cylindrical in shape, constructed of one circlular piece at base with rectangular piece forming sides. Open at one end and fastened with a cream cord drawstring threaded through metal eyelets and fastened with a brass D shaped ring threaded through two eyelets. This is a ship model of the SS Orotava, a British Screw Steamship built at Barrow-in-Furness, county of Lancashire, by the Naval Construction and Armaments Company (NC & A Co.) in 1889. Her gross tonnage was 5552.10 tons, length 430 feet, breadth 49.3 feet and depth 34.2 feet. She was built for Pacific Steam Navigation Company (of 31, James Street, Liverpool) and used as a passenger liner. She was launched 1889 and made 2 voyages for the Pacific Steam Navigation Company in 1889. Then under her new management of the Orient Line, she made her first sailing 6th June 1890 from Liverpool to Australia via Suez. During the Boer War (1889 – 1903) she served as a troop ship but apart from this she remained in the Orient Line’s Australia service until 1906. On 14th December 1896 the Orotava sunk at Trilbury Docks after being serviced on her return from Australia, becoming unstable and taking in water. Five men lost their lives. The ship was then raised to dry dock and repaired for service again and an investigation launched into the cause of the sinking. Between 1901 – 1906 the name ‘Orient-Pacific Steam Line’ was used due to the close ties between the Pacific and the Orient lines. In 1906 the Pacific Steam Line Australian service was taken over by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. and the alliance between them and the Orient Line was dissolved in 1909. Orotava was then used in the West Indies service of the Royal Mail Line In World War 1 (Dec 1914 – June 1916) she served as HMS OROTAVA, an armed merchant cruiser. She was broken up in 1919. The Richardson family was one of the very early settler families to establish themselves in the Orbost district. Samuel Richardson was a sawmiller and farmer in Orbost. He built The Curlip, a wooden paddle-steamer of 9 tons gross and dimensions of 43 feet long, 10 feet wide and a depth of 3 feet, on the slipway at their Tabarra sawmill in 1890. The Ballarat Horticultural Society was established in 1859 by a group of thirteen men with the aim of establishing an association for all lovers of horticulture. These labels come from the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. This factory was opened in 1888 and, after Cobden, was the second co-operative butter factory in Victoria. Today the factory is owned by the Canadian dairy company, Saputo. It is the oldest surviving dairy company in Australia. These labels are of interest as they show the type of label used by the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory some decades ago. These are six labels printed in a continuous fashion on the one page. The labels have black printing and a perforated line down one side for easy detaching of the labels. The manufacturer's name "GROSVENOR" and the defence symbol of the broad arrow indicates that the equipment was produced by an external company.This set is representative of a typical set issued to contemporary servicemen and women and as such, has social significance as a ubiquitous relic of service. The set has strong interpretive capacity, being able to draw on issues of equipment, food, technological shifts over time.
