This is a supplement issued by the Weekly Times newspaper in 1896 to commemorate the opening of the Warrnambool Industrial ad Art Exhibition in November 1896. The exhibition ran for three months in the Warrnambool Town Hall/Mechanics Institute area with some temporary buildings. The attendance was recorded as 70,000, making it one of the biggest events ever held in Warrnambool. There were displays, competitions, concerts and operas and sporting and cultural events. The exhibition was historically important as being the time and place when the earliest surviving sound recordings made in Australia were produced by Tommy Rome on an Edison phonograph. The supplement came from the estate of Bruce Morris, the editor of the Warrnambool Standard from 1946 to 1968 and an important Warrnambool historian.This paper, although tattered is a most important souvenir of the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7, a significant event in Warrnambool’s history. The supplement is also a valuable record of businesses and people of the late 19th century in Warrnambool.This is a supplement to an 1896 newspaper. It has 20 pages but is incomplete. 1. Mechanics Institute:- this building was built in 1883 and designed by H E Tolhurst. It included a library, reading room, museum, billiard room and mineral collection. 2. Town Hall:- the current building was built in 1901 on the site of an earlier Town Hall. The architects were Williamson& Permewan of Melbourne. 3. Cannons:- were recovered from HMVS Nelson, a wooden steam ship that was one of the first of the colonies warships when it was on permanent loan from Britain from 1867. It ws then broken up in 1929. 4. A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. The performers were the RAAF Central Band. Held in December each year. The photos from 1995 show President Millie presenting flowers to Inez Bruce, Gwen Gunn and Irene Noll. Usually the concert was the time the Widows Clubs presented Legacy with funds raised through their fundraising each year - in this case $21,000 - and the president acknowledges with flowers. The article mentions that over 1,800 widows came together for the concert despite the rain and bad weather. The RAAF Central Band was conducted by Sq. Ldr. An article about Ivanhoe Grammar School students who were involved in the school's 'activities week' where the student undertook community service. Legacy found six houses in need of painting and 66 boys were given the task. The Legacy widow, Mrs Drowley of Fairfield appreciated their work and provided tea and scones. Otherwise it was at no cost to her. Pictured were Neil Gaule, Matt Campbell, Con Markidis, Neil Jordan, Peter Augustes and Bruce Permezel. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity. Colour photos of a trip by the Walking for Pleasure group for a walk by the sea. Participants would meet at Legacy House and make their way to a destination, sometimes by bus, or train or even ferry in the case of trips to Williamstown. Walks were generally on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month. The sessions were a fun way to exercise and enjoy the company of others. The events were advertised in the Answer and anyone was welcome to join. Legacy organises outings and events for the widows to participate in. Names are not known except Inez Bruce in two of the photos. Location and date is unknown, probably about 2005 due to then other photos they were stored with. The ladies had stopped for refreshments in a cafe and were transported by McKenzie coaches. Spring bound photographic record of the former Lyric Theatre, 19 High Street (Charing Cross), Bendigo, by Bruce Trethowan, B.arch, FRAIA, dated June, 2005. A letter in the front of the document mentions as part of the Bendigo Bank Development, it was necessary to demolish the former Lyric Theatre. Before doing so, the Bank commissioned a heritage architect to produce a photographic record of the building. It is addressed to Mr Jim Evans, President, Bendigo Historical Society and dated 10 August 2005. The beginning has the Historical Background, Building Description and three pages of Plans and Elevations. [from EDHS Newsletter No. 39, November 1984:] MALDON TRIP A bus load of members and friends travelled to Maldon on 28th October. This proved to be a long but enjoyable day. Peter Bassett-Smith provided an interesting commentary on points of interest along the way. At Maldon local resident, Mrs Frances Gray, guided the bus around the many interesting features and entertained members with her lively and knowledgeable comments. Because our usual driver, Bruce Ness, was recovering from an illness, Mees Bus Lines provided a replacement driver at the cost of the company. Mees have provided us with excellent service over a number of years, but this action goes well beyond what could be reasonably expected, and is very much appreciated. Gold and Redgum Inkstand made by Ernest Leviny, c1855-1858. Presented to Mr J.V.A. Bruce, contractor for the Melbourne and Murray Railway by the workmen, at Woodend on Monday 8th July 1861. This gold inkstand was Leviny's first major masterpiece commenced around 1855 and made from gold found on the Victorian fields. It featured four gold nuggets representing the Southern Cross from the goldfields of Ballarat, Bendigo Maryborough and Castlemaine. It was exhibited in Melbourne in 1858, and again in 1861 where it was awarded a 1st Class Certificate at the Victorian Exhibition in Melbourne. In 1862 it was exhibited at the London International Exhibition where it attracted a great deal of attention and was published in The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue accompanying the exhibition. The Newbridge Rifle Club Butts were behind a big hill north of road to Llanelly. Formed in 1900 for rifle practice during the Boer War. Range of 500 yards. Brigade Captain Bob Douglas. Murray Comrie Collection. Two copies of a monochrome photograph, image depicting a large group of men assembled in an outdoor setting, some holding firearms. Printed caption reads: 'The Newbridge Rifle Club' Title printed on top of page reads 'The Bendigonian' and 'October (?) 22 1901'. This is a poor quality copy of an older original, possibly a news clipping. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1960s.Accompanying note identifies some subjects: Standing: 1. The Shire of Eltham Historical Society's float in the Eltham Community Festival Parade won the award for the best display for the second year running. We received a trophy donated by the Billabong Family Bistro, Lower Plenty. The theme of the float was the Eltham Bush Nursing Hospital. The float was prepared by Bruce Ness with some help from other members. A number of members contributed with costumes and other props. Hospital equipment was kindly loaned by the Judge Book Village and in what has become something of a tradition, members of the Victorian Folk Music Club accompanied the Society for the Parade.
