This is a standard issue, Australian Army Kit bag (referred to as a "Sausage Bag". It is made out of canvas, colour brown. It has numerous brass eyelets around the opening. Inside is a flap of similar canvas sewn to one side.On the base in white paint VX123648. The surname "Stevens" is blotted out by a 12 cm Square shipping label. It is partially destroyed. Item belonged to Mrs Eileen Pascoes father Arthur Castleton Clarke VX79039. He enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 5.5.42 and on discharge from the Army he was a Sapper in No 20 Australian Maintenance PL RAE. Refer 528.2, 530, 531. Her Grandfather William David Maher No 68 enlisted in the AIF 10.9.14 in the 8th L.H Regt A Sqd. Embarked for overseas 25.2.15 then for Gallipoli 16.5.15. He was hospitalised 5 times including Dysentry, Malaria and Pnuemonia. He was discharged from the AIF on 23.3.19. Refer 529, 533.2. All items referred to are Trench Art.Ashtray, brass, silver/chrome plated. Base is from a possible 4" Shell with 3 'U' shaped metal pieces to hold cigarettes. The top lid is kept shut with an American Pattern clip and post system. Inside the bag are two little pockets. The bottom 'Pocket' covers the drain hole.
