This is a photograph of an engraving showing the first train arriving at the Echuca Wharf on 25/09/1865. The photograph appeared in the Illustrated Australian News on 25/09/1865. It also appeared in Susan Preiestly's book, 'Echuca; A centenary history' in 1965 on page 46.. The picture is of interest because it shows the size of the wharf in 1865. It also shows all the crowds to welcome the first train. It also shows the buildings along Murray Esplanade. In the far left the Steam Packet Hotel, Shackell's Bond Store and the St George's Hall, next the The Bridge Hotel. Five large steam ships are visible, all carrying crowds of people. In the foreground is the S.S Melbourne. Two rowing boats are in the left foreground.This engraving is significant because it shows the welcoming of the first train onto the wharf. The photograph shows the size of the wharf in 1865, as well as the street scape and the vessels on the water at the wharf. There is also some activity at Evan's sawmill. There are crowds on the wharf, and lining Murray Esplanade. It also shows that most of the crowd are males, which helped describe the role that women played in public life in the 1880's. This is a picture of the railway station building which was built in c. 1865. The railway line was built from Bendigo to Echuca in 1864. The left wing of the present building has an additional floor to the original building. Refer page 62 of Susan Priestley's book. "Echuca; A Centenary History." The Building of the Echuca Railway station was very significant to life in Echuca. It made travel easier for residents, but also it helped develop Echuca as the largest inland port in the world. Traders brought wool and wheat down the Murray-Darling river basin to Echuca where it could then be sent by rail to Melbourne for shipping overseas, or to other ports around Australia. These medals were given to school children in Victoria in 1954 as a memento of the visit to Australia of Queen Elizabeth 11 and the Duke of Edinburgh. This was the first visit to Australia of a reigning British monarch. The tour took in 57 Australian towns and cities, including ten days in Victoria. These medals have no known local provenance but are retained for display purposes..1 A circular bronze-coloured medal with the image of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh and printing on one side and a crown and printing on the other side. A bar with a decorative scroll on the top portion with printing is attached to the medal by a metal ring. Decimal currency was introduced into Australia in 1966 with 50 cents, 20 cents, 10 cents, five cents, two cents and one cent coins issued at that time. The images of Australian animals and birds on one side of the coins were designed by Stuart Devlin. The one and two cent coins were discontinued in the 1980s and $1 and $2 coins were introduced in 1991.These coins are retained as examples of Australian decimal currency coins in the 1970s. This is an Australian radio licence issued in 1962. Radio licences in Australia were subject to a fee payable to the Commonwealth of Australia from 1923 to 1974. The fee in 1962 was £2-15-0 ($5.50). In the 1970s TV and radio licences could be combined at a cost of about £26 ($52). This licence was issued to a member of the Stasinowsky family who resided in Warrnambool. This item is retained as an example of an Australian radio licence issued locally.This is a buff-coloured piece of paper with a pink edging at the top, printing, a stamp and a handwritten signature. These cards were established by the Federal Government in 1939 and continued until 1952. This identity card was issued to a member of the Stasinowsky family living in Warrnambool. This item is retained as an example of an Australian World War Two identity card. This is a buff-coloured card with black printing, handwriting and a stamp. The MU on these badges stands for Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. This was one of the most prominent of the benefit societies operating in Warrnambool over the years. Originating in England, Manchester Unity I.O.O.F. was established in Warrnambool in 1860. This benefit society built and opened the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street Warrnambool in 1869 (building still extant but now used for office space). Some years ago the Manchester Unity I. O.O.F. joined with the Australian Natives Association to form a new benefit group, Australia Unity. These badges are of interest as mementoes of a benefit society that was prominent in Warrnambool for over 100 years..1 A round metal lapel badge with gilt edging, an outer blue band and the letters ‘MU’ in blue and red on a gold-coloured background. The stud clip is at the back. .2 As above except that it has a long stick pin attached to the back instead of a stud. The Victory medal was awarded to all Allied servicemen and women who served in World War One. Australians were issued with the medal made for British service personnel. The medal described above was awarded to Private Thomas Wickham. He was born in Port Fairy in 1886 and died in Warrnambool in 1955. Private Wickham enlisted in February 1916 and his next of kin was his wife Elizabeth, living at that time in Terang. Thomas Wickham was a member of the 58th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement. He served overseas and returned to Australia in 1919 and was discharged as medically unfit because of rheumatism. This is a round bronze medal with the image of a winged female figure of Victory on the obverse side and engraved lettering surrounded by laurel leaves on the reverse side. This book was written by the Rev. Gordon Powell in 1956. Gordon Powell (1911-2005), the son of George Powell, a Kepler Street dentist, was born in Warrnambool. A minister, writer and broadcaster, the Rev. Gordon Powell was the best-known Presbyterian minister in Australia in the 20th century. He was the minister at the Independent Church, Melbourne for many years and served in New Guinea as a chaplain during World War Two. When minister at St. Stephen’s Church in Sydney he attracted the largest congregation of any Protestant church in Australia at the time at both his Sunday and Wednesday services. He gave radio talks for many years and was responsible for introducing the world-wide group, Alcoholics Anonymous to Australia.This book is retained as it was written by an influential 20th century Australian Presbyterian Minister, the Rev. Gordon Powell. He was born in Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 124 pages. The cover is blue with black lettering on the spine. The dust cover has black and blue printing and a photograph on the front of a coastal scene. This book by Jack Gorman contains articles on horse racing in Australia, and in particular, Victoria and the Western District in the 19th and 20th centuries. It includes articles on the 1891 Melbourne Cup, the Casterton Centenary Cup of 1961, the champion horse ‘Waranton’, hunting in the Casterton district, the 1922 Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool and many people associated with horse racing in the past. This book is retained as it contains articles on various horse races and people associated with horse racing of the past in the Western District of Victoria, including accounts of Warrnambool races. It will be a useful addition to our local history library. This is a soft cover book of 52 pages. The cover has brown and white colouring and has an image of the finish of a horse race and black printing. The pages contain printed material, black and white photographs and sketches. William Wilson Jamieson came to Warrnambool around 1857 after running a Ironmongers business in Hawthorne died . He opened his store in Liebig St which he operated until his death in 1882. He was quite active in the community serving on the town council for a number of years and also the Oddfellows Lodge and the Mechanics Institute. He came to Warrnambool in 1857, after running an Ironmonger's business in Hawthorn and having worked for the hardware company McEwan & Co. in Melbourne. He bought a weatherboard building that had previously been a 'bowling saloon' in Liebig Street and opened a business that Gardner describes as a general store and Turnbull describes as a drapery store. He was a member of the town council from 1862 to 1874 and from 1877 to 1880 and also served as mayor for two terms. He was also active in community organisations including the Mechanics institute and the Oddfellows This token is of great importance. It is significant for three reasons: 1. It is an example of an 1850s Australian token, demonstrating an early business practice in our history. 2. It is an example of a Warrnambool token produced by an important Warrnambool business (only two firms in Warrnambool produced tokens)A round copper token. The token was issued by: W.W. Jamieson & Co.. Liebeg St. Warrnambool, Storekeepers 1862 which is in raised lettering on the obverse of the token. The reverse features a blindfolded woman with the scales of Justice in her raised right hand. This copy is dated July 1 1905 and covers items of interest and advertisements for current businesses many which continued as household names until the latter part of the 20th Century. Charles Hayden Hose enlisted in WW1 20/07/1915 at the age of twenty one.He embarked on HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 18 November 1915.He returned to Australia to Australia 3 March on HMAT Euripedes. The Australian Natives' Association was a benefit association originally founded in 1871 for Australian-born white males. It amalgamated with Manchester Unity in 1990 to form the association, Australia Unity. The Warrnambool branch of the Australian Natives' Association, Branch Number 100, was founded in 1889 and was a prominent group in that town/city for many years.The original owner of this badge is unknown but it is retained as a memento of the A.N.A., an important group in Warrnambool for over 100 years. This blouse was made by Annie Beryl Mathieson from silk material which came originally from China via family relatives. Annie Beryl Mathieson, born in Western Australia in 1910, married John Harman in Nullawarre in 1939 and made the blouse which she wore under a navy costume for her 'going-away' outfit. They lived at Macarthur and Annie Beryl died in 1983. This blouse is of interest as an example of women's fashions in in the late 1930s and of handmade clothing in the same era.This is a cream silk blouse. The story of this item is unknown. It may have been part of a man’s watch chain, with the watch missing. Its weight suggests it is an item of good quality, one owned by a person of substance and a common item for a wealthy man to have in the 19th and early 20th centuries.This item, in our collection for many years, has no known provenance and is kept for display purposes. This is a silver chain with silver links with a metal match holder at one end, a silver container in the shape of a ship’s wheel in the middle and a locket or coin holder at the other end.. The match holder is heavily patterned, the ship’s wheel container may have held coins in the past as it is recessed at the back and the locket or coin purse is ornamented and contains what looks like a coin, perhaps a threepenny bit from the time of George V or V1. This letter book contains letters written by representatives of the Warrnambool Lance Patent Pan Company to agents in Western Australia during the period 1896 to 1913. This company was formed to market the Lance Patent Cess Pan produced by George Lance in Warrnambool. The Western Australian venture did not prove profitable for the company. George Lance was a Warrnambool plumber and gasfitter who produced the Eureka Pump and the Lance Patent Cess Pan. The latter sold widely in Victoria with the Warrnambool Council owning 1700 of these pans in 1896. George Lance was also prominent in Warrnambool as a musician, artist (eleven of his works are in the Warrnambool Art Gallery)and local history writer. He was also involved in the development of the Warrnambool Mechanics Institute and the establishment of the Warrnambool School of Art and Design and the Warrnambool Art Gallery. This letter book is of considerable interest as it gives details on one aspect of the George Lance invention of the Patent Cess Pan (its marketing) and George Lance played an important role in Warrnambool's late 19th century history.This is a letter book of 506 pages. It has a hardboard cover with a mottled red pattern and red binding on the spine. The pages contain an alphabetical index and copies of letters handwritten in black ink. There are many blank pages. St Margaret’s Church of England was officially opened on December 12, 1861. It is the oldest intact church building in Eltham. At the time it was known as Christ Church until its consecration in 1871, when it was completely free of debt (£1,700 for the church and parsonage) despite the district’s poverty. This was largely due to the free labour and materials, including locally made bricks donated by local artisans and others. The church is historically significant because it is the oldest church in the former Shire of Eltham and has associations with the philanthropist and founder of Brighton, Henry Dendy (who donated the land on which the church is built), the architect Nathaniel Billing and the prominent local builder, George Stebbing. The church is architecturally and aesthetically significant because it is constructed in the Gothic Revival style with several stained-glass windows of various dates and is also a very early use of polychromatic brickwork in Victoria. Billing was one of the first Melbourne architects to employ polychromatic brickwork and an important early architect. The rear wall was intended to be temporary. A major feature of the design is the large buttresses with long, steeply graded upper faces. The overall design is well proportioned with the surface brick patterns relieving an otherwise austere design. The church is spiritually and socially significant because it has been an important place of worship for the people of Eltham for almost 150 years. The land on which the buildings stand was donated by Henry Dendy. Dendy arrived in Melbourne in 1841 after purchasing in England eight square miles at Brighton under the system of "special surveys". After this land passed out of his hands, Dendy moved about Victoria, visited England, then returned to settle in Eltham where he purchased a flour mill. Dendy chaired the meeting held in 1860 “for the purpose of devising such means as may be expedient for the establishment of a Church of England in the township of Eltham”. He became chairman and treasurer of the church committee. Unlike the establishment of many early churches in Victoria where a vicar was appointed to a parish and later a permanent church was constructed, the population at Eltham initiated action to build a church. The nearest church at that time was at Heidelberg and the Eltham settlement was part of the parish of St Johns Heidelberg. Isolation and the tedious, time consuming journey between Heidelberg and Eltham resulted in the Eltham community taking its own action. The original vicarage (Dendy House) at the rear of the church is also an important part of the cultural significance of this place because it is connected to the church and the development of the Eltham area. Together, the church and the vicarage are aesthetically significant because they form a significant streetscape feature. The mud-brick community hall designed by Robert Marshall was added in 1978. In 2014 the original temporary rear wall was removed as part of a modern extension designed by Architects Atelier Wagner and constructed by Conrad Construction and Management. The building was designed by Charles Maplestone of Heidelberg, son-in-law to Anthony Beale of St Helena. Maplestone was a prominent architect who came out to Australia with his family in 1852. The foundation stone was laid by Mrs Isabella Maplestone on 11th November 1867. The bricklayers for the church were George Stebbing, H Limmer, H Spicer and a Mr Timm while Thomas Day was the stonemason. Another three years were to pass before sufficient money could be raised for its completion. It was opened by Bishop Perry on 1st November, 1870. The church bell which hung under a tree for 50 years until it was incorporated in the parish hall was brought out from England and presented by Charles Orme. In 1916, the estate of George Martin Pizzey left sufficient money to build the red brick hall, which still stands today (2023) though in January 1969 the hall and bell tower were badly damaged by bushfire. Coincidentally the former home of benefactor, George Pizzey was destroyed in the same fire. Of particular significance are the interior and exterior of the church, the Sunday school and hall with emphasis on pre-World War I fabric (excluding the 1990s additions) and the three coloured glass windows currently suspended in the 1990s entry foyer. In 2011 further alterations were made to the front of the Church. The church is historically significant because it was the oldest public building in the former Diamond Valley Shire, is amongst the oldest buildings in the Shire of Nillumbik and is associated with the early settlement of the Diamond Creek district. The church is historically, socially and spiritually significant because it has been a place of worship for over 150 years and continues to be, an important meeting place in the Shire. The church is aesthetically significant for the three stained glass windows executed by the noted stained glass manufacturers, Ferguson & Urie, as well as the supporting coloured glass windows in the church. The Sunday school & parish hall is architecturally significant because the hall is a well executed and preserved example of the work of noted church architects, North & Williams. It is historically significant because it is connected with local parishioner and Melbourne industrialist, George Pizzey, who bequeathed funds for its construction. An autobiography by Otto Rupp (1904 -1993). Transcribed by the Yarrambat Historical Society from the original manuscript in 1993. Otto Rupp was born in Switzerland in 1904. He migrated to Australia in 1927 and after working in the South Australian outback bought land in Yarramabt. He married Edna Young in 1935. This diary includes recollections of his life from 1927 to 1983.
